Why do manufacturers think that both your IQ and your age plummet at night only to return to normal during the day? I do not want slippers with toy dogs on the toes, nightdresses/pyjamas with cartoon characters/silly slogans/twee pictures, etc, etc. I'd like something stylish and grown up, but not fuddy duddy nor overtly "sexy". I've just looked at M&S ballerina slippers and there isn't a pair I'd contemplate. Of course, I realise this is a personal view and other people may love them!

I'm with you on this Tresco it's my constant moan in fact.I want pretty, but grown up nightdresses and slippers/ dressing gown.I do manage to get them in the end, but takes ages to find.I also do not want anything that smacks of Granny Grunt.

Like tartan zip-up slippers and wincyette nighties with high collars? grin

Alima Tue 10-Nov-15 20:20:24

I had a smashing pair of tartan zip-up slippers. They were a Christmas present from my uncle Noel in 1962 when I was 9. I loved them, so warm and snuggly. Remember getting told off for wearing them out in the snow.

Isn't!!!!

I tend to buy pyjama bottoms then a tee shirt separately. That way I can choose the right degree of warmth or short or long sleeves.
I refuse to even consider pjs with gimmicky or advertising Walt Disney etc.

Slippers? I buy on line.
I have some lovely sheepskin 'bootees' and a very comfortable pair of Romika wool slippers, not cheap but comfortable and unusual.

jogginggirl Tue 10-Nov-15 22:14:53

I do that too loopylou and find Next or M&S perfect for that! I have a lovely check nightshirt from M&S that I put on with a pair of leggings in the evening, lovely for lounging around in....

At bedtime I just like my comfy PJ's - we have underfloor heating so slippers not required grin

Anniebach Tue 10-Nov-15 23:32:27

I wear shorts and sweat shirts with Pooh Bear, Tigger and Piglet on them blush

ok, and if cold I wear hold up stockings with cotton socks , well I sleep alone , my daughters fear storm damage to my home at night because I would be rescued in my sleeping attire

jogginggirl Wed 11-Nov-15 00:03:12

Stop it Annie - I need to go to bed.... grin

What I hate is the way so many nightdresses aimed at older women (in other words, warm, with long sleeves and midcalf length seem to come in twee pale colours or pretty florals). I like strong colours and patterns.

I can't sleep in anything too warm, so I wear short satin nighties. Why then, do they disappear in the autumn, to be replaced by pyjamas and long sleeved nighties?

Anniebach Wed 11-Nov-15 15:00:21

I dislike pyjamas and nightdresses , most uncomfortable, either twist around legs or waist

rosesarered Wed 11-Nov-15 15:07:52

Ana remember the tartan slippers with a big red bobble on the front of them?grinMy Grans used to wear them happily.
I agree Monica I want strong colours too, not pale blue or pink!
I prefer to sleep au naturel, but when DGC staying over, not appropriate ( unless I Want to traumatise them for life!)

Ana Wed 11-Nov-15 16:08:37

Yes, my granny wore those too! grin

Teetime Wed 11-Nov-15 16:16:13

I like a nightie I find pyjama bottoms ride up and I would be too hot (we will draw a veil over what DH would say). However I see M & S sells bottoms only for 'lounging' might get some of them and wear with a t shirt or jumper. Check ones not ones with gloopy cartoons on.

Respect, Tresco - I absolutely agree with your OP.

I prefer to wear nothing when sleeping but love nightwear for lounging around in. I do not want disney characters or those * bears that smile or any other cute/sweet cartoon characters on any of my clothing. I especially don't want it on my night wear. M&S have done some decent pj's in that stretchy jersey type fabric that feels nice against the skin. If I wear anything in bed, it's a nightshirt (see previous discussion on gransnet about whether we wear nickers in bed - definitely not)

Treebee Wed 11-Nov-15 22:35:34

Lands End do nighties in a smooth and comfy fabric in plain colours and patterns too. Lovely to wear and not frumpy or childlike.

M0nica Thu 12-Nov-15 09:54:10

I use to buy Landsend nightdresses, I got the long sleeved mid calf ones in strong colours and rich patterns, but when I looked this winter the range of colours and patterns was severely restricted and the long sleeved mid calf ones only came in plain rather boring colours.

Charleygirl Thu 12-Nov-15 12:30:31

Tresco I could not agree more. I am about 65 years beyond wearing Pooh Bear motifs or whatever on the front. I also do not want it up to my chin almost and with long sleeves and to my ankles. I would end up strangling myself.

I bought a pretty one on line a few days ago but it is not going to last - the quality is not there and it is very thin. It stated it was mid calf whereas it barely reaches my knees. In future I will go to look and "feel" them.

annodomini Thu 12-Nov-15 12:41:44

I prefer knee length nighties with short sleeves in a cotton material. I bought two in Bon Marché which are comfortable and wearing well.

David1968 Thu 12-Nov-15 14:02:58

I only wear cotton nighties and have found some Damart ones which fit the bill for autumn/winter. These are practical, comfy and pretty ones, sold in pairs - either pink or blue, with white. The style is nice enough to be feminine, but not too "young"! Mine are now into their third winter and have washed and worn well. Recommended!
