Makeup EVERY day???

I am either mad, very vain or a creature of habit.
I do a full make up every day. I just don't feel right without it- it's me!.
It suddenly occurred to me this morning as I was plastering on the slap that I was not going to see anyone until DH comes home tonight. (As some of you may have seen from others posts I am on crutches following a stupid accident so I am housebound.)
I still put the lot on.Really- why?? I do it every day. On the very odd occasions ( Noro virus!) that I didn't,I just felt wrong. I used to walk the dog first thing in morning & went out ( often in dark) without makeup but came straight home, showered & on it went.
The only time I don't is on holiday when it is going to be a day on beach & then I still use mascara & brow pencil & the full load goes on for the evening.
Do many others do this? - I rather hope so or I'm obviously very odd.

The removing of my makeup at night is part of my winding down. I use one eye makeup remover pad and then lovely (well I like the smell) Tea Tree facial wipe bought cheaply at Superdrug. I then put on moisturiser.

However in the morning I sometimes see that not all my foundation cream has been removed so I then wet my face apply Boots gel cleanser and very gently use their battery operated facial brush, they often have it on offer and I didn't pay a vast amount for it. The Clinique ones cost about £70 shock I think my Boots one was £15 and I have seen it cheaper. It works like a dream and my skin feels really clean. I use it about once every couple of weeks.

I think it is crucial to keep facial skin clean and moisturised.

NanKate The very same here! I could have written your post myself! Except I am 61 this year.

@ Aquagran oh absolutely - I shall be getting mine again for my hols! Just try and have a look at examples of lashes the salon has done for other customers on their website. And I specifically ask for a natural look when I go in to have them done.

aquagran Tue 10-May-16 16:08:59

Ok, will do!

f77ms Tue 10-May-16 17:46:12

Always wear make up when I leave the house but not plastered on . If I am staying in all day I don't bother so my skin can have a rest . I just hope that no one will call ! Indiana Clinique mascara is hypoallergenic so shouldn`t irritate your eyes .

NanKate Tue 10-May-16 20:42:10

How odd NanSue you have discovered another nightly cleanser and moisturiser in me.

You may be a mere flibertygibet at 61 with smooth clear skin, but I am fast approaching 6 score years and ten and regularly get compliments on my complexion smile. I must give credit to my late mum who looked lovely till the end.

Keep cleansing.

I cleanse and moisturise my skin every day, and I aim for a moisturiser with sunblock (I chop and change brands, current favourite is Olay Featherweight day cream). When I go out I brush my hair and put on a slick of lipstick. I have naturally thick eyebrows which I dye at home from time to time - just recently I left the dye on too long and looked like Alistair Darling.

On the one day a week when I work "uptown" I use mascara (never waterproof) and powder blusher.

nankate I was also taught to look after my skin by my mother, she was religious about it and still had beautiful skin when she died at age 71.

NanSue Wed 11-May-16 08:33:08

NanKate I didn't refresh the page when I posted, so I was actually referring to your first post which is why I mentioned the age thing. blush. I actually use Cetaphil cleanser and moisturiser whIch is widely recommended by dermatologists and is very reasonably priced. Please feel free to recommend any make up miracles that you may come across.smile.

| really enjoy make up the buying of it, the using of it, discussing it - all of it . I wish I had a larger budget for it so I could have lots and lots. Its a great pleasure to me and no-one but me makes me do it or prevents me from doing it so the question of being coerced by evil cosmetic companies and society pressure doesn't come into it.

Anyway I wouldn't leave the house without it but a light make up, more in the evening if going out (which isn't often). If I'm at home I sometimes I have a day off but with a goodly layer of moisturiser and always mascara or I look a bit piggy eyed. I wear something lighter in the summer than winter but always have sun protection on as I don't want to end up looking like an old leather handbag. smile.
N B As to eyebrows I was told they are sisters not twins so if they are a bit uneven that is natural.

I'm 69, and have always worn make-up every day (except Sundays - day of rest for the face!) Living alone, it's just for my own vanity I suppose. I switched to mineral powder foundation years ago, as it's weightless and doesn't clog pores. My morning ritual is moisturiser, primer, concealer, powder foundation, blusher, eyeshadow - usually shades of taupe, eyeliner - using dark powder (I like the smoky look) mascara, and eyebrow pencil (I don't have much in the eyebrow department these days...)
I love my morning ritual, makes me feel "dressed", and I look far better with it than without, and takes me about 10 minutes (50 odd years of practice!)
I even invested in some Rapidlash serum (to grow lashes) a year ago, and was amazed at the results - better than extensions and cheaper!
All is removed at night with Garnier's micellar water on a cotton pad (a recent purchase) which works far better than face wipes - everything comes off easily.

I wear make-up every day, particularly since going grey when my face tends to "disappear" without some additional foundation, blusher and mascara. If going out I wear more eye make-up and really enjoy taking time to apply it all. Was persuaded in a weak moment to have a make-over by a lovely girl on the Benefit counter - when I checked my face in the car mirror later, couldn't believe I had actually walked through the town looking like that! grin

NanKate Wed 11-May-16 16:51:40

NanSue no problem about the age thing. I quite like it if someone says my face looks younger than my age.

You ask for recommendations well here are a few that work for me.

Clinque moisturiser + expensive but last for about 9 months. It's yellow and in a large pump action bottle.

In Debenhams and some pharmacies they sell Artdeco makeup they have a lovely range of eye shadows. I bought one of their cases with a magnet inside and then I choose 1- 4 eye shadows to go in it. I know it is a bit indulgent but I could be dead next week so that is my excuse to treat myself.

Someone on GN recommended to me Seche Vite from any chemist. This is all part of my manicure. First base coat, then 2 thin layers of varnish, wait about 2 minutes and apply Seche Vite which dries it rock hard in about another 2 minutes, it is brilliant.

Over to you.

NanSue Wed 11-May-16 17:52:20

I really like the Benefit high brow pencil, a really good high lighter for under the brows to give a lfted effect. There are many similar, less expensive brands but not a patch on this IMO.I have my eyebrows threaded monthly to get rid ofthe stray hairs along with upper lip and chin, my brows are rather sparse due to much over plucking as a teenager so I give them a thicker look with Barry M's shape and define brow kit. I'm still searching for the perfect foundation. I've tried almost every brand on the market from Chanel to no.7. I am a bit of make up junkie! I dread to think how much I've spent over the years, with some expensive mistakes.

NanKate Wed 11-May-16 18:55:15

Same here SueNan I love make up but too often I believe the make up houses and all their hype.

I wear Estee Lauder's double foundation with their matching powder just to finish it off. I often get compliments when wearing it. However I still think it is not exactly the colour match I want and when I am next in John Lewis I will get them to give me a small free sample of another colour not far away from the one I have. I need a foundation with a pink/blue base, not yellow that makes me look sallow. If you find a colour you like the Estee girl will tell you if it is pink or yellow base from her chart.

I have worn Max Factor for years and their foundation stick nouveau beige (funnily enough it has a pink base) is perfect for my skin but it just doesn't last.

Did you used to have mascara that you spat on and used a little brush to plaster it on, I did ? grin

NanSue Wed 11-May-16 19:58:39

NanKate I do remember the spit and brush mascara!
I'm using the Look fabulous base at the moment (not great to be honest) I have tried Estée Lauder but I don't think it was double wear, so will have another look at that.
I'm going to treat myself to one of those colour me beautiful type sessions one of these days. Was it you on another thread, that said you had one booked? If so, how was it? The other thing I have trouble with is, finding a black eyeliner for under bottom lashes that doesn't end up all over my face by midday, looking like a panda! I've tried to go without but you would not believe the amount of "you look so tired " (they mean old) comments.

Coolgran65 Wed 11-May-16 21:52:16

Elizabeth Arden Touch and Glow foundation.
Taupe eyeshadow
Avon Glimmerstick eye liner - smudged
Brown mascara on curled eyelashes
Rimmel lippy - amethyst shade.
Brown eyeshadow to define eyebrows

Every day whether I'm going out or not.
I'm 67.

NanKate Thu 12-May-16 05:48:19

Coolgran that make up combination sounds lovely. I do love to see a nicely made up Gran.

NanSue I too bought some Look Fab makeup I like the concealer and the primer feels nice, not sure it does much though, I didn't like the eyelid base that made my skin in this place look more crepey than ever. I often watch the videos and think how nice the end look is. I haven't bought the foundation as it looks too yellow for me.

No it wasn't me who mentioned the Colour Me Beautiful, but I did buy the book which is really helpful and I have been assessed and found out that I am a Winter person and should be wearing vibrant purples, blues and strong colours. This was done about 20 years ago so perhaps they no longer assess you by the seasons. Do go for it I am sure you will enjoy the experience.

Can't give advice on the under eye pencil, other than to say I often buy bits and pieces of Rimmel and I seem to remember they do a waterproof pencil. When Boots are doing a 3 for 2 offer on all make ups, that is when I buy my usual stuff and then experiment with something I fancy for the third.

Lona Thu 12-May-16 08:12:55

I almost always wear full makeup, even if no one sees me! As I used to be a redhead, my complexion is very pale and I tend to look like a corpse without it!
I always remove it before bed. I've hardly any wrinkles and I've always thought that makeup protects my skin. I wear eye cream, SPF 15 moisturiser, primer, then foundation and loose translucent powder.
I've had a bcc removed from my face, so I'm careful to stay out of the sun.

gettingonabit Thu 12-May-16 08:29:05

I'm convinced that using makeup has protected my skin too, lona.

I have few wrinkles too, and I am frequently complimented on my skin. However the same can't be said for my neck. I now have a relatively youthful-looking face and an ageing, leathery neck. Not a good look. Probably too late now to do anything.sad.

I've just started using the Nivea Aftershave Balm as recommended in the media-it DOES work! And as cheap as chips compared to other primers.smile.

SwimHome Thu 12-May-16 10:27:29

Wear it when I'm at work (only a couple of days a week) and realise this is something to do with being seen to make an effort to look 'nice' for other people - same goes on the rare occasions we go out on the town. I'm just beginning to come to terms with the fact that my face is my life history not my fortune and to wear it proudly rather than try to hide every imperfection, which would be an impossible task anyway!

Grannynise Thu 12-May-16 10:50:28

NansueI'd recommend trying the Chanel eyeliner pencils. The are waterproof and don't crumble or fade as some of the cheaper ones do. There are a wide range of colours. I find black a bit harsh and prefer brown or a colour they call ardoise which is a sort of browny-black.

annodomini Thu 12-May-16 11:14:14

It has become a ritual. I don't use much make-up - just some moisturiser plus foundation and blusher, a touch of lippy if I'm going anywhere. I feel better when I look in the mirror if some of my blemishes (sun damage) are camouflaged!

NanSue Thu 12-May-16 11:59:01

Thanks to Grannynise and NanKate . I will give that Chanel pencil a go.

pollyperkins Thu 12-May-16 13:43:41

Well I seem to be in the minority. Im 72 and hardly wear. Y make up except for special occasions. Dont wear foundation - hate the feel of it on my face. Just a little moisturiser and a touch of powder to reduce shine, and lipstick - thats on most days. For special evenings out, weddings etc a bit of eyeshadow and eyeliner. Have hardly ever worn mascara or eyebrow pencil as my lashes and brows are still dark. If i try blusher i look like a clown.and i cleanse mainly with soap and water followed by a little moisturiser. I have got cleanser which i use if I've worn a bit more make up but do t like the feel of it. What is this bb cream of which you speak? I'm obviously very old fashioned!

pollyperkins Thu 12-May-16 13:44:53

Hardly wear any i mean!!! Blooming iphone!
