Hairdressing awkward problem

I would be honest with her. She will be happy that you still want her to cut your hair. Not a problem.

I always colour at home using two boxes of colour every 6 weeks as my hair is long. I only have it cut twice a year about 2 inches each time. It grows quite quickly. I sometimes wonder about having it cut more but I have always had long hair and I am a bit worried to change it now.

Daisydoo2, some things are easier said over the phone than face to face. This may be one of them.
Ring her soon (to get it over with) and ask her to book you in for a trim but no colour. Then tell her the truth, that you have to make some economies and you are going to have to colour it yourself from now on. She'll understand if you tell her the truth rather than prevaricate and most of the embarrassment on your part will have eased by the time you see her again. If she doesn't like it, well, she wasn't your friend after all, was she?

I wash my hair at home as I hate the back wash and also was trying to save money and then pay £16.50 for a cut which is pensioner's rate. Just let your hairdresser know it is getting expensive for you, I'm sure she will understand. Mine said that is it is the regular customers like me who are her bread and butter.

Don't worry about your hairdresser, she'll be fine. Just start colouring your own hair. I do mine every four/five weeks, I couldn't possibly afford to pay someone to do it. Also hairdressers take hours , I've seen people having it done. Couldn't waste all that time,

I have my hair cut and blow dried every 8-9 weeks in a bob. I go to the hairdressers with freshly washed wet hair. Cut and blow dry costs £17.50

Hairdressers must be use to this and expect it as people get older, retire and move away, she must adjust her business to meet her clients needs. Many hairdressers have diversified offering beauty treatments to expand their business.

If you reduce your appointments you are giving her a chance to take on new clients. And if she is good that won't be a problem. Or she may want to reduce her workload and not work so much as she must be getting older.

If you have been going to her for years she may be wondering if you are ill or she has upset you so maybe the best thing is to tell her over the phone when you make your next appt.

Would it not be better if you explained your predicament and asked your hairdresser for advice on home colouring rather than turn up having done it. I am sure she would be happy to give it and would appreciate her professional advice being asked.

I think I'm lucky with my hairdresser. She charges £18 for cut and blow which I tend to have every 6 to 8 weeks. I have it base coloured and highlights roughly 3 to four times a year for which she charges £35 including cut and blow. The colour lasts quite well as grey blends with the highlights blend as it comes through and so isn't immediately noticeable! My hairdresser is good. When she does it if she's not happy with how the highlights look she works on them until she is.

I had the same problem. I told her my granddaughter was now cutting it as she needed the money. I now use supercuts for £14.95 a drop in and have found they have given me a much better cut. You could just make an appointment and then phone up and cancel it.

Since retiring I've gone to my local college to allow trainees to cut my hair. A cut and blow dry costs me £7. I can honestly say I've never come away with a bad cut. The tutor is always there to keep an eye on things. I've never enquirered about costs but they do colouring and perms as well.

I go about every 6 - 8 weeks for a cut, blowdry and colour (sometimes just roots touch up, other times highlights), and I pay about £60. I find if I can put about £10 away, I have saved for it. I do the same for my paper bill and window cleaner. Had to change hairdresser recently because my old one had become unreliable, and my new one is a breath of fresh air - she is on maternity leave at the moment, so I am working my way through the other stylists in the salon!

That should be put £10 a week away!

Am I the only person who has hated going to the hairdressers all my life - probably due to the hairdresser always cutting my hair far too short when I was a child even though my mum tried to stop him too! I haven't been to a hairdressers in years, and actually cut my own these days too (with a little difficulty, haha)!

Lazigirl Nice and easy is about the best but go for a shade lighter than you would like the end result to be as grey hair is porous . Also decide if you need a warm shade or cool shade . Ash tones are not good for older people and will wash you out , but without knowing what colour you want to end up I can`t suggest anything more .

It is not like a doctor or dentist. My hairdresser put her prices up to city prices (live in a small town) so I have tried all local hairdressers and found someone more reasonable that I trust and am happy with. It's a pity but you can overprice yourself and lose out.

Nice an easy is good but I’ve started using e salon - it comes in the post blended for your hair length and colour. It’s really good. I just stopped getting mine coloured at the hairdressers when I stopped working full time and then went for a cut with recently coloured hair - my hairdresser has been fine about it - even said what a lovely colour I’ve done! The bit I find difficult is what to tip!
