Do you and your family wear Christmas jumpers. Or do you think they look tacky

jaylucy Fri 13-Dec-19 11:10:09

Oh Dora Marr, I can remember always having a new "best" dress for Christmas when I was a child. When I got to about 10, I was allowed to choose from my aunt's mail order catalogue. I chose a royal blue shift dress, with a zip down the front and a stand up mandarin collar - only thing was that it was a wool mix so very itchy!
We have our annual Christmas meal tomorrow - I will be wearing my Christmas T shirt. Quite frankly don't care what other people think!
Last time I bought a Christmas jumper, I wore it to work and family meal (on the same day) washed it on a wool wash as the label said - it ended up twice the width and half the length!!!

Where I work is freezing but we're allowed to wear Christmas jumpers at the moment instead of our work polo shirt, so I've been and bought a couple . Asda have some nice ones not too tacky at all

Witzend Fri 13-Dec-19 11:13:50

I bought my first several years ago - but it's ended up with a dd who didn't have one for a particular do.
I think they're fun for those who, like them, I'm not remotely sniffy about them, but I doubt I'll buy another. I'd never in a million years be able to get dh to wear one, though!

Many people including dd, son in law and Gdcs, were wearing them at Gdcs' nursery/pre-school Christmas fair last Saturday. Nice and jolly. Gdcs' came either from a charity shop or were hand knitted by a relative. (Not by me, I'd never be able to manage the crocheted snowman's face appliquéd on!

I have one on now. It has stars on it that flash when I move. It’s Christmas!!!!

Craftycat Fri 13-Dec-19 11:23:57

Oh Yes!! I have several but my favourite is one with 2 large strategically placed Christmas puddings that says 'Hands Off My Puds'. Tacky as they come. Love it!!

EMMF1948 Fri 13-Dec-19 11:28:10

I have bought myself a Christmas jumper, an expensive cashmere polo neck, not a festive symbol in sight.

NannyG123 Fri 13-Dec-19 11:30:29

I'm wearing mine to our over 55s club party, the code is Christmas jumpers.

notgoneyet Fri 13-Dec-19 11:32:18

Tacky? I love tacky - gives a lot of stuffy people something to tut tut about lol tchsmile

Jan51 Fri 13-Dec-19 11:42:55

I can't wear a jumper as I get too hot but I have 3 nice tops (as opposed to tee-shirts). One has a red nose reindeer, one has glittery holly leaves and the other has father christmas in a chimney, this is the one I shall wear christmas day as the grandchildren will love it and that's what matters.

pen50 Fri 13-Dec-19 11:55:59

I have some Christmas earrings which look like small baubles....

Saggi Fri 13-Dec-19 12:03:14

When I worked ...it was for an extremely large retail company ....and for a week around Xmas we were ‘encouraged’ to wear these tacky , awful jumpers ..paired up with stupid reindeer /Santa headbands ..usually with flashing lights. Now I can see how the younger generation might like this ...but I happened to work with an older workforce ( late 50’s early 60’s) and we all hated this nonesense . No choice...we had to be seen to look stupid!! Think you’ve got my answer!

PennyWhistle Fri 13-Dec-19 12:08:48

I find jumpers far too hot - so have two gorgeous long sleeved Tshirts with festive images on the front. Wearing one of the tshirts combined with a little headband containing tinsel stars helped to make me feel really festive at our swim team Christmas breakfast this morning without overheating smile

lovebeigecardigans1955 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:21:49

My reasons for not liking Christmas jumpers:
1. Big chunky tops make me (short and dumpy) look fatter
2. They are too warm for modern centrally heated homes and can't be easily removed, unlike a cardigan.

PamelaJ1 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:27:25

Seems to me that if everyone wore a Christmas jumper a fortune would be saved on heating??

BlueBelle Fri 13-Dec-19 12:32:40

You guys must have plenty of disposable income to have such hot houses I don’t have central heating but my daughter does she works for theNHS but can’t afford the heating above 16 so jumpers are needed in her house as much as in mine
Why have your heating so high when a jumper could allow you to have it lower and preserve our fuels and dare I say it keep us healthier
Hard hat firmly in place

dragonfly46 Fri 13-Dec-19 12:37:32

Yes I wear them and I have a Christmas T-shirt. The more tack the better at Christmas.
It is all about having FUN!!

Mollygo Fri 13-Dec-19 12:39:27

I love Christmas jumpers as long as they don’t have rude messages. I have a reindeer and a sparkly star one, both from Sainsbury’s on different years. Our house must be colder than I thought because I wear mine with a thermal longsleeved vest underneath. OH has a couple too. GC’s love Granddad’s jumper with a furry reindeer which they love to stroke.

Madmaggie Fri 13-Dec-19 12:45:59

BR (before retirement) I worked in a large academic library with lots of rules & regs. Then we had a major management reshuffle & we were permitted to show our humane side. On went Christmas jumpers/hats/elf outfits for charity, I still have a photo of us in our jamas & slippers clutching teddies & hot water bottles for charity. We found it really broke the ice & students found us more approachable, especially the shy or lonely ones. The day goes better for a laugh.

lilydily9 Fri 13-Dec-19 13:07:46

If you don't want to wear a woolly jumper then Boden do some nice Christmas bretons. Mine has a reindeer on the front and I usually wear it Christmas eve. Not tacky at all and gets you into the spirit (mine's a bacardi and coke).

travelsafar Fri 13-Dec-19 13:44:35

I have a jumper and a t shirt. I wear the jumper to appropriate xmas do's and the t shirt on Xmas day when i am busy in the kitchen and get warm. Its a bit of fun smile

homefarm Fri 13-Dec-19 15:30:46

A total waste of money, tasteless and unwearable after Christmas, add to that most of them are plastic bases fibres. I don't encourage any one to buy or wear one.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 13-Dec-19 15:38:14

Doodle
Typical. Once again ' old uns' getting stick. I can assure you that at my church recent annual xmas lunch for pensioners it was members of the younger generation who were there to help? hmmjury still out on that. who were making derogatory remarks concerning the elderly, who had got into the festive spirit with their 'xmas' sweaters.

Mollygo Fri 13-Dec-19 15:42:52

Homefarm I defend your right to dislike them, along with my enjoyment of them but even M and S are now making knitwear including Christmas jumpers from recycled polyester.

LuckyFour Fri 13-Dec-19 15:44:00

I don't own a Christmas jumper and have never actually wanted one. I don't want to have to wear the same thing every year or buy something I can only wear once or twice at Christmas. I prefer a nice dress, although nothing fancy.

FlexibleFriend Fri 13-Dec-19 16:05:18

When I say I'm too hot for wearing jumpers that also means I'm too hot to put the heating on. I suffer terribly with over heating and was quite shocked one day last week to actually feel chilly enough to put leggings on my bare legs but I still couldn't have worn a jumper. I don't actually own a jumper, Christmas or otherwise because I'd never wear it.
