new europe situation

Why are the papers full of surprise, shock horror, that british passport holders will be expected to follow the rules for travelling into europe? What did they think would happen when they chose to leave the EU. They chose to become outsiders and now winge about the effects of their choice. When you chose to leave the gang , you are not part of the group any more , and are treated accordingly. Do the British still think they have some right to be treated in some "special" category?

It's £7.00. for three years. If you can afford a foreign holiday that's peanuts.

Finger prints at airports are a real nightmare for me as mine just do not work anywhere. Whatever country we're in I have a few tries at the machines and then get shepherded off elsewhere to be questioned and have officials try and try again to take a print of them to compare. It has always eventually worked eventually but then I've been passed through another exit and wonder where the heck I am and unable to find my DH. I always wonder what will happen if they can't manage to get a print. Did read that fingerprints can fade a little with age and especially in women if their hands have been in water a lot, don't know if this is true. Does anybody else have the same problem?

I vited remain, but actually, it’s no big deal, if you’re used to travelling outside Europe.

What does make me mad is the thought of all those whingers who sat on their rear ends and didn’t bother to vote, who will now complain bitterly about the visa.

Maybe we should reciprocate, will bring much needed cash to Reeves coffers.

Good thought.

From next year you'll have to pay a tourist tax to visit Edinburgh. And Scotland moans about being dragged out of the EU against it's will and is still trying to leave the UK despite a referendum

Mollygo Sat 24-Aug-24 11:45:14

We have had to pay tourist taxes in France and Italy for years now, whether we stay in hotels or gîtes. Everyone is charged, whatever nationality. If Edinburgh wants to do it, why not?
It would be a good fund raiser for the LakeDistrict too.

If your vehicle isn’t up to Sadiq Kahn’s ULEZ regulations it’s £12.50 each time you go into London, including the suburbs.

7€’s for three years covering the entire EU area is a bargain.

we brought our own demise.. but latest figures show that 59% of people now wish to rejoin the EU... though I rather suspect that they would make it very difficult now

It would be very costly to rejoin I would imagine.

Reminds me of the phrase ‘you’re going to reap what you sow’. The trouble is those of us who voted to stay in the EU are reaping it as well!

Exactly. I have never got over the recklessness of the referendum because I knew that if people voted to leave everything would be worse. I predicted that France would let more immigrants through to the UK (not that I have a problem with that but I knew the Brexiteers did and were shooting them selves in the foot). But you can’t reason with stupid. Now they’re up in arms about immigration again because they still haven’t learned what the real cause of the problem is.

It’s not a question of how much it would cost, it’s accepting their laws and regulations, like freedom of movement and ECJ it’s not a problem for me, a lot of others would object.

Well said.

HS62 Sat 24-Aug-24 12:44:26

We don't miss paying millions into EU coffers though. It was astronomical.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 24-Aug-24 12:53:58

HS62 : we did also receive monies back from the EuropeanUnion. In our local area , a large and expensive regeneration of the seafront of a nearby town was funded from an EU grant. I expect that there are similar stories in other places.
Sadly, I have been unable to see materialisation of the savings promised at the time.

mokryna Sat 24-Aug-24 13:16:35

What annoys me is that people who voted for Brexit, immediately applied for an Irish passport via grandparents.
Do I have to pay going into the UK or coming into France? I have both passports but only allowed to stay 30days in the UK.

Walesrho Sat 24-Aug-24 13:17:03

Most countries are now asking for finger prints or retna scans for entry. It’s a nice money earner. We knew there would be issues in leaving the EU but this show you how controlling they actually are. The EU are nothing but paid hench men and women.

Parky Sat 24-Aug-24 13:40:40

Yes knspol I have same problem every time I visit

We're not in Europe and never have a problem. Although usa doesn't believe our country exists when renting a car.

Oreo Sat 24-Aug-24 13:49:51

It’s no big deal, fingerprints or eye recognition is the way things are going.Passports can be faked but not physical things.
Tourist charges are a good idea for all tourist hot spots both here and abroad.
The money is just a few euros so nobody should be moaning, actually not sure that anyone is, it’s the media who stir things up.

jocork Sat 24-Aug-24 13:53:10

At the time of the referendum my DD worked as a tour manager for a UK orchestra. She was on tour in Japan when the result was announced and phoned me in tears, needing me to instsll skype so she could have a conversation where she could see me! Leaving the EU made things much more difficult for musicians to work in the EU and increased her workload hugely applying for visas etc.

Soon afterwards I remember a gransnetter posting that having voted to leave, against the advice of her adult children, her AC were going to be emigrating for work reasons. She was feeling really hard done by, but I had absolutely no sympathy. So many people voted leave as a result of lies told by the leave campaign and who really didn't do their own research. As many have said, we all suffer the consequences of this bad decision whether we voted for it or not, but those who did vote for it really need to stop complaining! And they called remainers 'remoaners'!

Babamaman Sat 24-Aug-24 14:08:23

Totally agree! UK wanted to protect its borders! So why shouldn’t Europe protect itself as well! Worst decision ever to leave the Union!
Save our borders? 🤣🤣🤣 joke and lie of the century!
Everyone in the UK are losers in this.

NfkDumpling Sat 24-Aug-24 14:09:05

I'm not likely to travel so much now, but have done in the past and usually have to complete some sort of form or visa or have finger prints taken, stare into cameras. It's just part of the joys of travelling and make me feel I'm actually Abroad and not just in another part of my country. And, of course, joy of joys, there's another stamp in the passport to add to the collection! (Since we now have to pay £10 just for the privilege of taking a plane from my local airport, the new 'fee' is negligible.)

Oreo Sat 24-Aug-24 14:10:43

It won’t just be those who voted for Brexit moaning ( if anyone is really moaning,) in fact it’s far more likely that any moaning is by remainers or those who cba to go and vote.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Sat 24-Aug-24 14:20:52

I voted Remain

TiggyW Sat 24-Aug-24 14:22:20

Cressy - it’s not just UK residents who will need an ETIAS, it’s more or less anyone from anywhere outside the EU. Can’t see a problem myself if travelling to a foreign country. Similar passes are essential for travel to the US and some other countries. Not sure about supplying my fingerprints though.
I hope the UK will operate a similar system to bring in some cash and keep an eye on dodgy incomers.
It’s just a pity that illegal immigrants don’t have to abide by the rules.

Jackiebackie Sat 24-Aug-24 14:26:25

Why are Remoaners still so bitter. Get over yourselves.

Siope Sat 24-Aug-24 14:44:14

Jackiebackir I’m angry - but not bitter - for many reasons, not least because on a personal level my planned entire retirement was - and is - screwed by the Leave vote. And I will get over what I want, when I want, thanks.

And, of course, it isn’t ’just €7’. Here is a warning about the economic impact for tourism in Kent, and for businesses locally and wider bmmagazine.co.uk/news/port-of-dover-warns-eu-border-system-has-lasting-negative-impacts/?amp

Here is the head of Dover Port’s warning, widely reported around the world this werk, that the port faces paralysis by Easter due to the new system
