There are a lot of good films just released - spoiled for choice

We rarely go to the cinema but on Friday we managed to catch the "second best exotic marigold hotel" and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had watched the first one on dvd so understood the story but scenery and colours were so much more intense on the big screen. I was also impressed by the fact that it was comfortable to watch without the fast panning and quick cut shots that are so prevalent now.

I saw "Still Alice" on Thursday and found it very moving. A pity there were only 8 of us in the cinema at the early evening showing. I wonder how long these multi-screen cinemas can keep going.

Saw Suite Francaise yesterday, quite good, not a film I'd want to see again though.There was only 16 people in the cinema, not exactly a block buster.

if Set Fire to the Stars comes to a small cinema near you, grab the opportunity. It's about Dylan Thomas.

Saw a preview of Testament of Youth, last night. Very moving. It is quite long, but we did not notice as we became absorbed. It might have helped already knowing the book.
My only complaint was that the supposedly 18 year old men all looked and sounded as if they were 30.

I suppose Vera Britten would have seen them as bold and mature when she reflected back. x

Theory of everything this afternoon. Best film I have seen for a long time.

Just wish we could get to see newly released films without having to travel miles! One of the drawbacks of living where we do!

Saw The Theory of Everything last night, really enjoyed it. An outstanding performance from Eddie Redmayne who played Stephen Hawking.

tegan my first date with the boy who became DH was a film called Angels 15 a war film made in 1952.In those days it wasn't a case of choosing which film you wanted to see, rather which film was showing at the only cinema in town on the night you were invited on a date. It didn't turn out too badly as we are still together.

Well Tegan he's just stormed upstairs because I wasn't taking The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz quite as serious as he wanted me to - geek. He's back at college in less than 12 hours! lol

No pressure but they say that the outcome of a relationship depends on the first film that a couple see together .

My DS is taking his very first proper girlfriend out on Wednesday to see The Theory of Everything because they are both geeky. Aw, cute.

About time there was a new Thomas Hardy adaptation; I think Carey Mulligan has the right sort of face for a Hardy heroine.... 'he wrote great parts for women but boy did he make them suffer for it'

Ooh, sounds good, Teetime, I'll be watching for those - well, not 50 Shades perhaps as I started reading the book and gave up - but I bet my daughter's generation will be going to see it in droves.

I read in todays ST that The Suffragettes with Helena Bonham Carter and Lady Chatterley's Lover and Far from the Madding Crowd with Carey Mulligan are due for release this year (not sure if they are made fr TV ones) and heaven help us 50 Shades of Grey.

We took the grandchildren to see the new penguin film .We Did not like it there was far too much violence and one penguin kept swallowing objects the smallest being a paper clip. What kind of example was this to under 6s ?.We adults went to see Paddington and we're glad we had not taken the children as they would have found some scenes upsetting especially the three year old .

Went today to see the new Annie, with dgd who is 7.
Dgd was enthralled for two hours. Fun, music, dancing..
Excellent.

Thanks for the reviews on The Theory of Everything. I was wondering if it was worth seeing and it sounds like it is.

Just got back from watching the theory of everything. It is a fantastic film excellently produced and written. Factual without being mawkish and over sentimental. Eddy Redmayn was superb. Highly recommended.

Would recommend The theory of everything. Excellent recount well acted and very moving.

I've read about this film Tegan and it's subject matter Louis Zamperini. Whilst I'm sure the story of his life would be fascinating, what a remarkable individual he was, I can't bear seeing people being treated cruelly even if it is only on film we know it was a true story. It's the reason I didn't see the Railway Man or Twelve Years a Slave.

We saw Unbroken the other night. I can't believe that Jack O'Connell, the local lad made good who is one of the patrons of our cinema is such an amazing actor. It's very similar to The Railway Man with Colin Firth but much longer and far more harrowing. A film about him had been planned since the 1950's but it was a combination of Laura Hillenbrands book and Angelina Jolie meeting him that got the film off the ground. I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone but I'm glad I saw it. I'm glad that Louis Zamperini lived long enough to know the film was being made, but sad that he didn't get to see it [although he would probably have found it hard to watch [impossible more likely]. I'm going to dip into the book to see if it's as well written as Seabiscuit. Laura Hillenbrand relates to such strong characters because of her struggle with ME, and that strength seems to permeate everything she writes.

Do post what you think of it Penstemmon I am keen to see it as well.
