I watched the first series because it was compulsive viewing, but found it v disturbing. Now I'm thinking, Do I watch the next, or leave it alone? Out of interest ,does anyone else share that view.

That woman who visits the rapist in prison is giving me the creeps.

Ana Wed 02-Mar-16 15:17:33

I'm still enjoying it - best programme on tv at the moment, IMO!

I had recorded this from episode 1. I started to watch it yesterday but ended up giving up on it. I certainly agree about the sound quality. I was glad to see from this thread that its not just me turning the sound up and down. However, the main reason I switched off was just the unpleasantness of it all. The unlikeable characters and harsh storyline were just too much for me. I'm a big fan of Sarah Lancashire too so was sorry to have to give up.

Altima. Thank you.

The young woman was the kidnap victim in series 1. The man in prison, Tommy Lee, was one of the kidnappers. He raped her.

Didn't see the first series.
Can someone tell me what is the connection between the young woman PSO and the man in prison ?

Jalima Wed 17-Feb-16 23:11:10

Lona, I suspect you're right and the 'other woman' is the same one that Claire's love interest was involved with when his marriage broke up
hmm can we see what's coming?

rosesarered Wed 17-Feb-16 21:54:38

Am recording at least three to watch together, that way I know exactly what's happening. The last series was brilliant, so will be a hard act to follow.

Ana Wed 17-Feb-16 20:50:39

I'm familiar with the accent and didn't have any problems with the sound quality, although I do agree that Sarah Lancashire's character does speak very rapidly and I had to concentrate hard during some scenes.

Not sure how they can resolve it really.

I don't think she's a prison visitor, rather one of those women who fall for violent prisoners and write to them.
Radio 5 this morning had a piece on the sound quality. A number of sound techies phoned in to say that's the issue, poor tech control, rather than mumbling actors.
It was gratifying to hear lots of northern accents amongst the people who phoned in to confirm that despite being from the area in which its filmed, they were struggling to hear. One sound engineer complained that (like me) he was having to put his volume up and down throughout the show, music too loud, voices often too low. He said it could be sorted out simply, he named the techie thing needed but of course, I can't remember it.

Lona, I suspect you're right and the 'other woman' is the same one that Claire's love interest was involved with when his marriage broke up. I do hope Claire gets back on that wagon

whitewave sorry, trying to rename you blush

Jalima Wed 17-Feb-16 19:49:45

I thought someone said she was a prison visitor, but she can't be, they would be vetted and would probably live locally.

It would link it into the storyline.
Lona I think in fiction everything links in to the storyline eventually, even the dead sheep grin
Unlike RL, nothing happens randomly!

whigtewave it does get better after the sheep incident (unless it is not your kind of thing)

Ana Wed 17-Feb-16 19:36:58

I don't think it started as anything to do with his mother's death - Catherine was the one who put him behind bars.

Ana Wed 17-Feb-16 19:35:16

He's been in prison for a while, she's had plenty of time to communicate with him and hatch a revenge plan. Killers get all sorts of mail from deluded fans only too keen to believe he's the real victim...hmm

Elrel Wed 17-Feb-16 19:32:49

What I meant earlier, on 17th, was that she must have planned to go to Hebden before Tommy Lee's mother was killed when he didn't have such a huge motivation to get Catherine. He's the only person (apart from his girlfriend?) to believe Catherine killed his mother.

Elrel Wed 17-Feb-16 19:28:34

Alima - creepy Ms Welland has, allegedly, only just come to Ryan's school from Linlithgow. I'm wondering how she got her job apparently so soon after visiting him in Gravesend. Any girlfriend he had before being incarcerated would have been known to the police. She can't have been in Hebden before his mum was killed or, again, the police and neighbours would have been aware of her. I'm assuming there that if she'd moved to Hebden months ago she would have got in touch with his mum.

I'm sure they'll cook up some evil scheme to hurt the Cawood family. Run, Ryan, run!!

Again, I must grasp that it is fiction!!

whitewave Wed 17-Feb-16 18:45:06

I only got as far as the poor sheep in the first 5 minutes and haven't watched it since.

LullyDully Wed 17-Feb-16 18:37:22

I enjoyed the last series. I think I may give this one a miss....I am not enjoying it at all. shock

Lona Wed 17-Feb-16 13:43:51

Could Molesley's dead girlfriend be the same bunny boiler who broke up the marriage of Catherine's sister's new fella?
It would link it into the storyline.

granniefinn Wed 17-Feb-16 13:37:48

I like the fact that they have brought in more people but the sound quality is rubbish I can usually hear the tv without my hearing aid as I am deaf on one side but I had to put it on to hear it

Charleygirl Wed 17-Feb-16 11:58:49

Alima Sarah Lancashire also speaks very quickly in this series some of the time. It is a combination of diction and sound quality I think.

Alima Wed 17-Feb-16 11:41:12

Elrel, Tommy Lee's girlfriend is a TA in the same class that Tommy Lee's son, (Catherine's grandson) is in. Creepy! As Tommy Lee hates Catherine will the girlfriend harm/abduct the boy to get at her or is she there just to keep a watch on the family?
I agree about the bad sound levels this series. It is the first time I have found Sarah Lancashire hard to listen to so am thinking it is sound quality rather than her diction.

Ana Wed 17-Feb-16 11:34:31

I think the idea is for the creepy girlfriend to get close to Catherine and more specifically her grandson. She's already questioning him under cover of listening to him read.

No doubt the revenge Tommy Lee is plotting will soon become clear...

Elrel Wed 17-Feb-16 11:29:32

Why can't 'they' get the sound levels consistent? The opening music is loud but I'm finding a surprising amount of conversation unintelligible. Catherine's words to the 15 year old drug seller as she marched him out of the playground were inaudible. (Shouldn't he have had a teacher or parent with him?)I don't remember Being unable to hear the first series. Fiddling with the volume control all the time is annoying.
Otherwise I'm nervously fascinated although 'Molesley' is somewhat unbelievable. He veers between stereotypical irritable dad and man capable of anything. He just didn't seem desperate enough for what happened with his neurotic ex-mistress. I felt sorry for his long suffering wife, 'Hayley' and family but if he gets his just deserts they'll be better off without him.
Tommy Lee's creepy girlfriend seems to have crept from Scotland but why go to work in Hebden when her beloved is apparently incarcerated in London? Setting up the TA job would have taken a few weeks at least, it couldn't have happened between his mother's death and funeral.
OK - I know the answer: It's NOT real life!!

Greyduster Wed 17-Feb-16 10:22:12

Last night's episode was terrific - especially the scene where Caroline faced Royce down in the crem. "Now you know what it feels like", in a look. And his rage! I'm a bit puzzled myself about the Mr Molesley sub-plot but hey ho. For the first time last night we had to have the subtitles on as neither of us could hear what was going on - unusual for me.
