Manhunt with Martin Clunes

I've recorded it, was watching Les Mis. yesterday. It's an awful story, played out a couple of miles from where I live. I remember being horrified by the murder of the two girls, Amelie and Marsha who were attacked walking home and everyone was very jittery at the time as it became apparent this was the work of a serial killer. Of course we didn't know then that he was also responsible for murdering Millie Dowler. Will probably watch it early evening. Awful man

I agree that this sort of programme must be very difficult to bear for the relatives of those girls so tragically murdered, but I hope and believe that they are approached and asked for permission. If not, then that is reprehensible.
However, I have to admit that I found last night's episode fascinating, and other similar series in the past. Maybe I have a warped mind, but I do like knowing how the detectives work and gradually build up a case and find the evidence they need to bring about a conviction. I enjoy watching Martin Clunes in anything, and thought the whole thing was realistically done. I look forward to tonight's episode, while still bearing in mind the suffering of those victims and their families.

I have recorded it and will watch it by myself. DH won't watch anything like this. I like most things with Martin Clunes.

As a teenager and in my early twenties I went past that spot twice a day. I remember being alarmed at the time of the real murder and it’s link to Marsha’s, as it used to (and probably still is) such a safe area.
I’m a bit confused about the bus though, they said she got on the wrong bus and walked back from the depot. I presume the depot was Fulwell Bus Garage quite a long walk. Where was the French restaurant? I thought it was in Twickenham, so why was she catching a bus?

J52 Amelie was working at a French patisserie in Richmond, I can't remember the name, but I know where it was, because I have met a friend there once or twice.

They didn't say she got on the wrong bus or that she got off at the depot, they said she went past her stop and had to walk back which was why she crossed the common. I don't know the area but know what was said.

Gosh. I hadn't thought of that. Stupid of me. Of course it's presenting an awful painful crime as entertainment. I've recorded it as I like Martin Clunes. I feel a bit ashamed now and probably won't watch it.

Ah, now I know that the restaurant is in Richmond it helps! I’ve watched the scene again, it’s at 41 mins into the programme. The detective, Jones, is looking at the CTV stills and says, ‘once I knew that she walked back from the bus garage’.
It’s fitting into place, still a long walk!

Martin Clunes and the policeman he played were on TV this morning. They both said it was done with great respect to the victims' families and that the families were fully consulted.

I did watch the first part last night and, like KatyK, I saw Martin Clunes talking about it this morning. He did say that his wife had been in contact with the victims family, I think he may have said she was the Director.
Originally, I thought it was a drama about the murders but he said it is actually the story of the police investigation and how the team worked to solve the case

I have just been reading that someone has made a film about the James Bulger murder, without consulting his family. I can only imagine the distress this has caused them.

I thought it was very sensitively done and Martin Clunes was excellent. What a versatile actor he is. His wife was the director.

I like anything involving detective work and how the police set about these awful cases. I have police in my family and I am very proud to think that they are there to bring these perpetrators to justice.

What's the matter with these producers that they have to bring up such hurt in the name of entertainment ?

Although " Manhunt " is interesting it will still feel raw re. Millie's family seeing something like this.

I felt so sorry for James ' mum on TV today but I do think we all forgot these were children who committed the crime.I think their parents should have been in the dock alongside them....what kind of "parenting" gives you children that behave like this.They must have been badly abused/neglected at the very least. I dont think it will do us any harm to look differently at these boys and to see how they became what they did .

One can't always blame the parents nor background from whence those with murder/killing in mind came from.

DH used to work with DCI Colin Sutton and said he was a very shrewd and clever man. We thought Martin Clunes was excellent in the role and found the first of the series extremely good. DH was very critical of the office politics that DCI Sutton had to face.

I'm torn between wanting to watch a good drama - and this has good reviews - and not wanting to exacerbate the feelings of distress that such a film may have engendered in the families of the victims.

I think you have to look at the parents when the killers are children ,anyone who says otherwise needs to have a rethink .Children aren't born bad ,somethin/someone makes them that way .

I am in two minds really, because I think there are many more crimes by this and other perpetrators which may not have been investigated by police over the years and which may now be looked at.

This is nothing like Luther, which I watched for a short time and decided was not acceptable. Over-dramatic, gory, incredible and silly.

This is a fascinating analysis of a painstaking police investigation, excellently acted with no unnecessary dramatic overtones. Clunes is brilliant. I understand that the families were consulted.

I meant Luther had upset me and I fear this drama may also upset me, so I will leave it for the moment.
