Yes I agree and it has a serious underlying message that isn't preachy. The acting is very good too and I'm pleased to see Miriam Margolyes joining the cast.

Do you mean "Call the Midwife"? I think some of the actors in it are rubbish - Helen George, plus the doctor, his wife and son. They wouldn't be out of place in an am dram production (no offence to am dram enthusiasts!) I've given up watching it.

I too love it. I am wondering why in 1961 when a mother I giving birth there is no mention of enamas !

I had my babies in 1969 and 1972 respectively. It was a most disagreeable experience and I was delivered by hatchet faced midwives who had not an ounce of human warmth so I relive the trauma watching anything related to birthing. I watched the first series of this programme as I was interested in the location which was near were I grew up and indeed had my tonsils removed at Poplar Hospital. I juts think like most things its gone on too long and its not sugar coated its dripping in syrup- not for me and to then follow that with Les Mis- thank heaven for Netflix and Amazon Prime I think I'm giving up on the BBC except for Jeremy Paxman on University Challenge.

I must have watched Vera ( Brenda Blethin ) a very underestimated actress to my mind and love her brand of investigating, so unruffled.

I like it as well travelasfar for all the same reasons. Yes its sugar coated but nice bit of escapism from gory murders ( which I also like ) and tacky reality shows.
No enemas mentioned Anniebach but piles got a minor role.

I love it. I didn't used to as all that pushing and heaving got on my nerves but now I know the characters I really enjoy it. I am fed up with all the violence that seems to occupy a large part of television viewing at the moment. I know there will be no swearing, nastiness and violence. Also my daughter has a flat in Poplar and I recognise the street names etc.

Teetime I must be a bit dim because I do not understand the questions on UC let alone the answers.

I haven't watched it for ages, but do enjoy it when I do. But, as an infrequent viewer I don't understand why the elderly nun [the one that seems to be on the verge of having dementia] who was old when the series started isn't any older now although I'm sure the series must have covered many years...

I enjoy watching it too. I would love to know about the adults and children in the opening photographs, especially the smiling young blond woman with her toddler. Who are they and where are they now?
I don’t watch any soaps and I suspect that Call The Midwife is filling that space for me but without the violence and shouting. ?

I too love 'Call the Midwife". It maybe somewhat sugar-coated however I watch it with big smile on my face especially when mum is giving birth. Something to watch, very light-hearted, no swearing, sex or drugs just an enjoyable programme for Sunday night.

I don’t think it sugar coated, I had lovey midwives ,and having worked in a convent I find the nuns just as the sisters i worked with

I love the escapism, too, although it's not without its grittier side - the poor girl who ended up with a hysterectomy after a visit to an illegal abortionist.

I chuckled at the new recepionist/secretary, who seems to do everything with her hat on.

What a wonderful night, last night.
I eventually got sat down at 8. We watched Midwives, then Les Miz.... followed by Vera which had been recorded.
Such a mix, and loved each one for their own reasons.

The new receptionist/ secretary, with her hat on, was busy last night . She was also in Les Mis that followed, but wearing a different ‘hat’ as the Abbess at the convent where Jean Valjean claimed sanctuary.
But I did feel for the mum who was having her baby turned, as they tried to turn my son. But being awkward/ independent, he flipped himself round in the end.

I absolutely love it. I went to a Anglican Convent (school) and also had my son in a hospital run by RC nuns in 1964, and they were so like the nuns on the TV that it took me right back 54 years. Lovely programme!

I've always enjoyed it and it is one programme that OH will watch with me. I think for both of us it brings back memories of that time. Watching the forceps delivery certainly brought back unwelcome memories for me. My first daughter, who weighed just under 10lbs, was born with forceps and a ventouse on her poor head. No scans in 1976 to see that I probably should have had a c-section.

Stephen McGann,s acting is awful in Call the Midwives, he only has two expressions , sad, and grinning, but I love the programmes especially when they deliver a baby, How is that done, ?

Yes. Dr. Turner is my least favourite character for his facial expressions.

It was a real tear jerker of an opening episode but I knew the third triplet would survive because the music gave the game away.

I haven't seen the first of the new series yet.

I am a huge fan of Call the Midwife but was very disappointed with the Christmas "special". In my view, it overstepped the sloppy sentimentality mark and I have to agree that the doctor's sickly smile is becoming very grating.

I'm another fan of this series. I bought the book of Jenny's memoirs, so was interested to see how it translated to the screen. Up to the time of her leaving, it was based on fact. Now, it's fiction, but still a pleasure to watch.
