Just watched season 1 (2 episodes) of the Field of blood on Amazon Prime. It’s not for the fainted hearted but I thought it was excellent. It is set in a newspaper office in 1982. Very unpolitical but reflected those times. Just about to watch season 2.

This series was recommended in today’s newspaper.

I wonder if Coronation Street is still considered a gritty northern drama? grin

I remember When the Boat Comes in and Boys From the Black Stuff from years ago, as well as films like Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow. And Kes.

I stopped watching Corrie several years ago. I'd enjoyed the mix of pathos, drama and humour but over a couple of years began to feel misery, ridiculous story lines and more misery dominated. No more gentle humour just rather unpleasant people behaving badly towards each other. So I don't know if it can be considered a gritty northern drama - certainly wasn't when I was last watching.
The Wednesday plays were brilliant, Cathy Come Home politicised me at age 16 or 17.

I am totally with you Iam64. Corrie used to be so funny with Bet Lynch and Eddy Yates. When the humour left so did I.

I loved The Boys from the Black Stuff too Day6 I wish they would bring it back.
Who could forget poor Yosser Hughes with his three little kids trailing behind him saying "giz a job, I can do that, go on, giz a job"

I haven't watched Corrie for years, but one of the funniest people I remember was Blanche, Deirdre's mum, she was hilarious. It was a sad day when she died.

I'd like to see some new good gritty dramas, great if they're from the Northern Poor House but I'd be happy if they're based anywhere as long as they're gripping story lines, with great actors.

Eastenders is a gritty southern drama.
