Last night's Endeavour really felt like an episode of Midsomer Murders. Very disappointing. The series seems to have lost something crucial.

We thought it was all a bit ridiculous and poorly written.

A vet's humane killer is not called a 'horse gun'

The horse would have been put down in the open - how on earth were they going to drag it out of the loose box? The knacker man would have been there to pick up the body. You wouldn't just leave it there.

Now......What's Fred Thursday up to? I can't believe he's gone bent. I'm hoping he's playing along with it to gather enough evidence to dob them all in.

I usually quite like it but last night's episode was daft.
It was a shame to see Roger Allum ( oh that gorgeous voice!!) allowing himself to be bribed too.
Of course you always know he is not going to get anywhere with a potential girlfriend as we all watched or have read Morse!

I was really puzzled by Thursday accepting money but then remembered that he had lost all their money to his brother in the last series - which is also why his wife is behaving so strangely. I had completely forgotten that whole storyline. ?

Those poison pen letters with Morse looking at the stamp. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that, back in 1969, the stamps had the price printed on, and not just 1st or 2nd. Second class post had just been introduced (I checked) but we had not had decimalisation, and I remember stamps showing the price, eg. 3d or whatever.

That envelope Morse looked at had a current 1st class stamp attached.

I agree that the plots of the latest Endeavour are poor. There was no reason to have a hunt in the episode as it added nothing to the plot. They could have just been out hacking.
What is Thursday up to? As poor old Morse is so unlucky with relationships then his old friend and mentor might just be turning into a wrong un. I bet Morse will be the one who has to turn him in.

Thursday’s wife is annoyed because he lent money to his brother.

I only saw 30 minutes of Endeavour last night then no signal returned so that was the end of that programme. It was an early night for me It appears as though I missed little.

As a pp mentioned, last night’s episode was indeed more like a Midsommer affair.......please get rid of the ‘tach eugh!

Also picked up on all the details re the hunt and, no horse is put down with a ‘horse gun’ or in those circumstances taken back to a loose box.....at least do a bit of research if you want to make your episode plausible!

Good grief, Mrs Thursday certainly knows how to hang on to a grudge, like a terrier with a bone. Her whole personna has changed and what the hang is Thursday thinking about getting involved in?

I wonder if Fred Thursday is on to an undercover mission.
A bit too much though, even for my some of my sillier
imaginings .

He seems to be perptually worried.

It does annoy me when new writers feel they have to put their ideas to spoil what was a sucessful and possible plot.

Well it seems several of us seem to be very suspicious of what Fred T and Endeavour are up to. .

I think Thursday is undercover to root out the bad cops . Have to agree it is getting like Midsummer Murders which we gave up on .

Watched the third episode last night ( yes, there was an element of Midsomer Murders ?) but overall was a much better watch IMHO.
Perhaps Thursday is playing a ‘long game’ by taking the money, and hoping to expose his new boss as corrupt?

I just watched this episode last night and was so impressed by Anton Lesser’s performance in the scene with James Bradshaw (Max de Bryn). This was a man in emotional agony about his wife’s terminal diagnosis trying to maintain an outward display of control so typical of that generation. Superbly acted.

Oh and it had to be the hunt - had it been a hack then everyone wouid probably have waited for horses to be exchanged and then ridden off together. The victim had to be left alone for the plotline to work. Maybe it was also an unseasonably mild March day!

These programmes are sold abroad and always feature some iconic form of Britishness; The Hunt; Oxford Spires, whatever.
I make a point of spotting the iconography is all this kind of drama. Good fun.
Also, am I right in thinking Strange is the future boss of Morse (actor James Grout)?

DH and I both thought that Thursday is a plant to catch the Bent coppers. Taking that money is totally out of character.

I agree with those that are saying the script and characterisation are clunky. I am surprised that they don’t all have an large arrow over their head pointing down and reading BENT. However on the plus side Mrs Thursday and Anton Lesser are superb. I wanted to hug them both.

Anton Lesser: did he play the main lead in that Cold War spy film... senior moment, I'm afraid. There was an exchange of agents..?

I also thought Anton Lesser gave an acting masterclass in the 3rd episode of Endeavour - the character of Chief Superintendent Bright has developed over time; he's a man with a cold outside and a warm heart which he can't show, it wasn't the done thing for his generation.

I haven't enjoyed this series as much as previous ones, but even when it isn't all that good it's still a cut above so much of the dross that's available.

Quite a bit of this 3rd episode was filmed in the village where I live! Great excitement at the time, and it was lovely to see the village pond featured so picturesquely.

Oh Thursday - you were my hero !! I really dislike his new boss and feel incredibly sorry for CS Bright - I think he gives a very creditable impression of that sort of man of that time.

I don't think so, there must be something else going on, perhaps an undercover operation as others have said.

Mrs Thursday is annoying me!! I don't like sulkers.

Yes Strange is the future boss of an older Morse! The clue is in him calling Morse 'Matey'. We enjoyed this episode, together with all its inaccuracies! Wonderful Anton Lesser, poor man! Mrs Thursday? How long can she keep this freezer behaviour up for?!! Is she having an affair? Is her behaviour causing Fred so much despair that he's become bent, or is he setting a cunning trap? Bring it on,!!!!!!!

Can you imagine what it must be like for her though. She has put up with a lot and dreamed of a happy retirement. For Thursday to have lost it all must have shattered all her hopes for the future.

My Granpa was swindled out of his pension and took his own life as a result.

Yes, actually I can! As you say it would have completely wrecked their retirement dreams and have been quite devastating. I think him not asking her about this loan was the real breaker, something I'm sure we can all understand.
