Saturday night TV just awful

Started off watching The Greatest Dancer but had to stop. I couldn't bear that thing they do where you can hear what the audience and the panel are saying to each other during the performance. I then began watching The Masked Singer but Davina McCall was unbearable on it. So over the top! Saturday night viewing has just gone down the pan - it's so banal it's just dire. Thank God for Netflix!

Thank goodness for Netflix. I watched a Tom Hanks film called The Terminal. It was very engaging. Then i watched the last episode of the Crown. Earlier in the day I watched Lowrys Mother. It was a really interesting film about the difficult relationship Lowry had with the old bat.

Julia Bradbury’s programme about walking in Iceland was truly amazing, the landscape is a sight to behold. BBC4.

Then we switched off!

Last night the live tv was appalling in my view. Felt like a real dumbing down of British life. Watched Monty Don’s American Gardens on catch up, fabulous. Will watch the Scandinavian Noir from last night later today. Thanks for suggesting ✅

Same as Pittcity I watched the bone detectives on four and then Channel 5. It might not be particularly good or original but there is normally at least one little snippet of real interest in their history stuff, for me it was that Cutty Sark, which I always thought was the fastest cutter, was actually beaten by Thermapolie. Oh and the information about L’Invinciblé (later HMS Invincible) was very interesting

Have not watched Casualty for years, but just how old is Charlie? Must be well overdue for retirement. I know the NHS is understaffed but......

Agree ….awful tv and think what we have to PAY to watch it …..wish we could opt out of the tv licence and just watch the free channels …...I do enjoy Call the Midwife though, and some TV drams ...Vera is worth a watch, and the news but other than that and some old films or decent dramas, hopeless !

Yes, Saturday night TV is a right-off. I do allow that for the many who follow football (not me) this has a place.
I have become increasingly depressed, distressed, disappointed, angry when I have the energy, and annoyed by the low standard of TV. The many quiz shows, reality shows dancing on whatever shows, all greatly annoy me as does the BBC News which during the election run-up was so biased. I have seriously thought of not paying my license fee and opting for the other stations only.

Maybe if enough people complain we might get somewhere? But I do think we are being forced to pay for alternatives such as Netflix.

We rarely watch live TV these days. Record programmes we like to watch. Last night we saw " Death in Paradise" tonight will probably try the New series of "Granchester".

Its now for me a case of rarely finding any channel on a Saturday evening that makes me want to switch on. Christmas TV ??????????? what happened there? I cancelled my sky movies subscription some time ago having found there was a much better choice of movies on daytime free view and could record.

I'm another one who watches things I've recorded because of poor Saturday night viewing! I love Frankie and Grace on Netflix. Has anyone else seen this? I struggled with the first few episodes but it has got better and I'm finding the second series really funny. I'm starting to relate now to the difficulties of bodily ageing, but mentally being still in my 30s (or younger). I'm also a Scandi Noir fan, and Spiral I love! OH watched this series with me, but had not seen any of the others, so I had to keep pausing it while I explained. I recorded the last series and will watch it on my own someime when he is not here.
I'm looking forward also to Le Bazar de la Charité with Audrey Fleurot, who is in Spiral. This is a mini-series on Netflix and based on a true story.

My daughter was visiting and wanted to watch the Masked Singer.......dreadful but I did want to see who the cameleon was. Turned out to be someone I had never heard of.
I too think that the hedgehog is Alexander Armstrong.

We really enjoyed "The First and Last" on ITV with Jason Manford. It's a bit daft but entertaining at the same time!!

I agree that Saturday evening TV is dire at the moment. We checked the guide and decided to watch two of the Killing Eve episodes that we recorded in the summer and then we watched and enjoyed Wisting, which we hadn't known about, so have missed 4 episodes.

Sad really as the rest of the week there is at least one programme each evening that is worth watching. Even the film channels are showing old and frequently repeated movies that we've seen or don't want to see.

So many channels to choose from but what a load of drivel is on offer on a Saturday. Not everyone goes out on a Saturday night.

Got some good ideas here thanks..
Nortsat46 your evening sounded good.

jenpax Sun 12-Jan-20 13:22:39

I can’t stand any game or talent shows so that tends to scupper a lot of weekend viewing!
I watched Father Brown and Midsommer murder on catch up last night then I listened to the radio via the app

Eloethan Sun 12-Jan-20 13:29:51

I thought it was quite an entertaining evening.

The new game/comedy show First and Last is very silly - but, in my view, quite enjoyable light entertainment. I like Jason Manford and think he's funny.

I also enjoy the Greatest Dancer - I think there were some fabulous dancers and unique routines last night.

The Voice is one of my favourites too - though I didn't at all enjoy the Masked Singer last week and didn't bother to watch it again.

It seems, from the comments on here, I'm easily pleased.

Nothing much appealed to me after 9 p.m. though, so watched some programmes I'd recorded, including a comedy called Lads which I thought was very funny.

flash1701 Sun 12-Jan-20 13:31:45

I totally agree. I record enough programs during the week to watch on Saturday evening.

grannyrebel7 Sun 12-Jan-20 13:55:30

Glad most of you agree with me. Sunday night viewing is much better Countryfile and Call the Midwife to look forward to!

Aepgirl Sun 12-Jan-20 14:15:36

I'm really hooked on the Masked Singer - the costumes are fantastic, and it's a bit of daft fun in this troubled world. Then there's First and Last on BBC1 - another fun programme that diesn't take too much effort on the brain.
What a pity neither of these were on over Christmas - now that was dire.

sodapop Sun 12-Jan-20 14:50:37

I cancelled Netflix as I could never find anything to watch. Can't get Amazon Prime so I've gone back to DVDs. Old fashioned or what?

mary51 Sun 12-Jan-20 14:53:00

Brokenwood on Drama channel the best last night. Reminds me of times spent in NZ, the sun, the attitudes, and seeing a road sign with the name of the town we stayed in.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 12-Jan-20 15:00:33

I watched The Masked Singer (at the same time as reading the paper) with the sound very low, only making it audible during the songs - that's says something, doesn't it? I don't know why they broadcast the judges' comments at the same time. They should wait until they've finished singing. Do the powers that be think that we switch on to hear the judges? A bit fat NO to that.
After that nonsense I watched Wisting on BBC4 - much more thrilling.

Jane43 Sun 12-Jan-20 15:03:49

I agree Saturday viewing is terrible. I usually have a bath and pampering session then watch Netflix or something on Catch Up.

MerylStreep Sun 12-Jan-20 15:12:10

Callistamon
Same viewing here plus a wonderful program on Borneo. I want to go there ?
Then The Untouchables on Prime.

Greciangirl Sun 12-Jan-20 15:13:51

Thank goodness for Netflix.

Last night watched ‘The Pianist’.

Incredibly moving biographical film about a polish survivor of the Second World War.

Have to agree. Saturday night viewing is abysmal.

annep1 Sun 12-Jan-20 15:24:39

The Pianist was very good. Some shocking scenes in it though.
