It’s just started and I’m liking it straightaway! Stellar cast. Imelda Staunton (love her). Francesca Anuns.

The series follows three adult siblings – Helen, Jake and Natalie – whose lives are thrown into disarray when their recently widowed mum Vivien declares she’s fallen for a new man, retired GP Mark.

As Vivien nears her 70th birthday, her children grow suspicious when Mark begins to shift her priorities away from her family.

Gorgeous location see the photo!

tanith Fri 28-Feb-20 13:32:16

Well yes what was she actually told about it all.

mumofmadboys Fri 28-Feb-20 13:29:01

But does Viv know what happened when she was out of it?

Calendargirl Fri 28-Feb-20 13:27:11

Well, Viv was obviously blaming them all for Mark’s fall, and their lies to the police, but doesn’t want to drop them all in it because they are her family tanith.
At least that’s what I think she does.

merlotgran Fri 28-Feb-20 12:31:34

AAh coming down not going up. Wasn't paying attention.

tanith Fri 28-Feb-20 12:17:03

I thought he was taking the sign down indicating that Vivienne had taken it off the market. I was a bit confused why Vivienne was looking daggers at everyone at the dinner table. Lots of loose ends.

merlotgran Fri 28-Feb-20 12:05:13

Was that another For Sale sign going up at the end?

I do hope not if there's to be another series.

soop Fri 28-Feb-20 11:24:52

Wowee! Loved it.

merlotgran Fri 28-Feb-20 10:29:15

So now we know that the 'News from the hospital' was Mark opening his eyes.

Watch out, Mary! shock

suziewoozie Fri 28-Feb-20 10:26:29

Calendar saying it had a better ending than DW Fell is hardly a ringing endorsement ?

Calendargirl Fri 28-Feb-20 10:12:55

It was definitely a better ending than ‘Deadwater Fall’ was.
At least the vast majority of us don’t feel we have been left
‘Tennanted’!

BlueBelle Fri 28-Feb-20 09:55:24

Yes I ve just watch the beginning bit again and I think we ve all assumed it was a body bag it’s extremely dark and you just see a small portion of the stretcher with dark covering and it pans up to the balcony and you see the cracked wooden bar so it is after his fall not another body
Although I also thought the police officer in the interview said one body and one in hospital so perhaps he said one suspected body and one in hospital

Callistemon Fri 28-Feb-20 09:47:05

LullyDully
all partners gone with Mary in charge

Brilliant summing up!

Callistemon Fri 28-Feb-20 09:44:50

vegansrock I think we have to assume that, yes, it was Mark on the stretcher, strapped on safely if he was badly injured.

Mary has her surrogate family back, at least for the time being.

Callistemon Fri 28-Feb-20 09:41:23

It was diazepam, Urmstongran

Perhaps he was hooked but was keeping it from Viv or perhaps the extremely competent Mary spiked his drinks but she did just seem to slosh some into the glass and didn't take the glass away.

lavenderzen Fri 28-Feb-20 09:26:42

I have missed some bits of it, like Marella I dozed off! Enjoyed it though. Got to be another series surely.

vegansrock Fri 28-Feb-20 09:23:55

Perhaps it wasn't a body bag but Mark strapped into a stretcher being carried off the beach, maybe had been wrapped up because of hypothermia. Also Viv was in hospital as well after her collapse wasn't she? Definitely second series, lots of loose ends - did Mary set light to the car for one?

Sparklefizz Fri 28-Feb-20 09:11:38

Welshwife I think re the cig it was just yet another thing that Viv didn't know about Mark .... and Mary threw in the comment that "It's a brave man who smokes around Viv" so presumably she was very anti, which he didn't know.

Imelda Staunton (as usual) was completely brilliant.

Welshwife Fri 28-Feb-20 09:05:50

Can anyone tell me what the significance was about Mark smoking the cigarette and Viv seeing him? - Mary made a comment about smoking and Viv.
Mary and Viv were obviously very close - Viv was not at all put out about the dress and she had supported Mary in her darkest hour when her baby died.

Marelli Fri 28-Feb-20 09:04:29

I'm going to have to watch all the episodes again. I can't remember the bodybag and having nodded off briefly during each episode, I've obviously missed very important bits.
Loved it, though. ?

Greyduster Fri 28-Feb-20 08:51:48

I hoped that would be the last of it, really. Not a single character in it I could have any sympathy for. Her children were awful people, especially Jake, and I would have hopped on the first plane out with creepy Mark just to have got shot of the lot of them!

Urmstongran Fri 28-Feb-20 08:37:25

From the Telegraph review page this morning:

“Imelda Staunton gave the standout performance as the fusspot neighbour. We had been set up to suspect her as the would-be killer, and were proved half-right – while she didn’t push Mark off the balcony, she did try to suffocate him when she found him still alive on the shingle. Deliciously, the ending hinted at a second series.”

Moocow Fri 28-Feb-20 08:34:55

Definitely more stories to develop from all that. Really would have liked them to be more subtle with something else at the very end rather than the simple opening of the eyes, but overall I thought it was very good.

Sparklefizz Fri 28-Feb-20 08:19:29

Yes, Terri the house was lovely, but as someone mentioned earlier, I kept thinking about high tides and how it would get flooded. There were no sand dunes to act as a barrier.

Sparklefizz Fri 28-Feb-20 08:17:44

So many loose ends.

Calendargirl It was Lily, Helen's daughter, playing on the beach with the children - no sign of Layla. And yes, what about Lily, the teenage minx, posting up film clips online of her Mum being sick, and earlier having mentioned she wished she'd taken photos of her granddad when he was dead!!!

But none of the children were at the birthday party, so Lily is not likely to pop up with some vital clue that she'd filmed.

Re the body bag, I thought the police officer doing the interrogation mentioned "We have one body and one patient in hospital" plus I was positive we saw a body bag. I am thinking of watching all 4 episodes again if I can spare the time.

Definitely think there will be series 2.

TerriBull Fri 28-Feb-20 08:16:56

Certainly kept us hooked over four nights. Thought the family dynamics were acted out very well. Mark's eyes opening right at the end had a "Fatal Attraction" not dead yet quality about them shock maybe the writers have left it open for a follow up.

Fell in love with the main star of the series, "The House" and the fact that it was located right on to the beach gave it a wow factor. Probably not so appealing right now though!
