hmm. Stealing a role from a woman?

Riverwalk Wed 09-Feb-22 15:29:14

I have no problem with imaginative casting as long as he doesn't take too many female roles from women actors.

Ilovecheese Wed 09-Feb-22 15:37:07

I hope the pay is the usual rate for a woman.

tidyskatemum Wed 09-Feb-22 15:37:25

Riverwalk you are not allowed to call Eddie Izzard “he” or the thought police will be after you. Eddie Izzard is a self-appointed woman who happens to have all the male bits

Grandmabatty Wed 09-Feb-22 15:37:30

He isn't female though, unless I've missed something. I know he wears woman's clothes but I have never heard he identified as a woman. Happy to be proved wrong

I thought Izzard was currently gender-fluid so he/she can't expect everyone to be up to date with how they are feeling on any given day!

I do like Eddie. Doesn't make a song or dance about pronouns either.

How many is too many? One role? Five? A hundred?

Iam64 Wed 09-Feb-22 18:10:45

Grandmabatty, he says he has days where he wakes up in girly mode.
He’s a brilliant actor and I like him but - is this like cultural appropriation ?

Deedaa Wed 09-Feb-22 18:14:34

Wasn't dear Ralph Bates in the film Doctor Jekyll and Sister Hyde tears ago? I think Eddie will be really good and probably very scary.

So how is he going to play this?
As a male Dr Jekyll and female Ms Hyde?
Or vice versa?

I wonder what Robert Louis Stevenson would make of it.

So if it’s a female reimagining of the role and Eddie Izzard doesn’t identify as a woman, why has he landed the role ? All very confusing.

We saw Eddie Izzard performing in Oxford years ago. Hilarious. It was his first time on stage in a dress and makeup. He made a little announcement about it.

Mollygo Wed 09-Feb-22 18:18:02

I don’t like him or rate him anyway so I won’t be watching. I don’t think men’s gender fluid is a topic I want to read about.

Grandmabatty Wed 09-Feb-22 18:32:11

Pammie1 totally agree.

Sparklefizz Wed 09-Feb-22 18:39:06

I have never liked him so won't be bothering with watching him.

BlueBelle Wed 09-Feb-22 19:20:18

Don’t like the man that much, and don’t rate him very highly in the acting world He plays on the she/he business and I find that irritating. Be what ever you want to be but I don’t need to hear all about it Just get on with acting mate and stop trying to be ‘different’ to gain popularity I m not interested in his gender

AmberSpyglass Wed 09-Feb-22 19:22:49

She’s gender fluid and I assume the character will be as well - really looking forward to this!

Jane71 Wed 09-Feb-22 19:27:16

I saw Maxine Peake play Hamlet a few years ago.

Blossoming Wed 09-Feb-22 19:30:46

Eddie Izzard will be acting a fictional rôle so I don’t see that it matters.

Callistemon21 Wed 09-Feb-22 19:40:20

The main question is - can he act or not?

Mollygo Wed 09-Feb-22 19:40:37

He’s gender fluid? How can anyone know which is the appropriate pronoun without seeing him?

JaneJudge Wed 09-Feb-22 19:48:56

Ilovecheese

grin

I imagine he might have over exaggerated PMT hmm

Pammie1 Wed 09-Feb-22 20:03:07

Blossoming

Eddie Izzard will be acting a fictional rôle so I don’t see that it matters.

It matters because the ‘reimagined’ role is that of a woman - Nina Jekyll. I can’t see any reason why the role needs to be filled by a man - all sorts of implications for female actors.
