Your best film ever?

An ad has just flashed up on my phone offering a Private Screening at my local Cineworld Cinema for up to 100 people of my choosing for £120. So a bit like a birthday bowling/ trampolining/ soft play party for a child - but for grown ups.
So it got me thinking - I don’t actually have 100 friends sad so it might be fewer, but what film would I choose ?
While I am thinking - what film was your BEST EVER which you would like to share on a special occasion?
(Presumably the popcorn ? is included )

My favourite for watching when I'm on my own is The Bridges of Madison County adapted from the novel by James Waller. It's a love story staring Meryl Streep as an Italian War Bride in Iowa and Clint Eastwood as a photographer on assignment to shoot the historic bridges of Madison County. They meet while her family are away . . .

East is East

It's like choosing a favourite book. I can't. I love so many of the films already mentioned.
One that hasn't come up is Cinema Paradiso which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1989. It's so moving and has a score by Ennio Morricone and is considered one of the finest films ever made.
I realise that my choices are music led. I love Zulu, Witness, Dr Zhivago, Laurence of Arabia, The Mission, The Last of the Mohicans.
My favourite western of all time is She Wore A Yellow Ribbon with good old John Wayne followed by The Searchers with John Wayne again.

Bridges of Madison County.

Another great film!

It's when she's in the passenger seat of the lorry.
It's pouring with rain and she's torn between love and duty.

My first thought was Gone with the Wind, but was then reminded of Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago. So 3 at least
Would need to watch all 3 again and then decide.

Definitely The Talented Mr Ripley

Because The Wizard Of Oz seems to have been on tv for the last umpteen years, I have never sat and watched it. Just said oh no not that again. Suddenly realised I might actually love it if I gave it a chance.

Got to be 'White Christmas' for me, always a winner.

Foxyferret Wed 07-Sept-22 13:26:42

Rebecca with Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier. The brilliant Mrs Danvers still scares me.

glammagran Wed 07-Sept-22 13:28:46

The two films at the forefront of my mind are Lion and The Constant Gardener.

The Mission. For the music, the scenery, an actual story, Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, and a very young Liam Neeson. But an ending to make you weep.

Strangely I've never met anyone else who has seen it.

I have seen it, big screen and small. The opening sequence, Gabriel’s Oboe, the redemption of RdeN slaver character,
an inevitable ending, wasteful, sad.

My choice(es) would be Elvira Madigan, Fanny and Alexander, Out of Africa,
The Glory of my Father/The Chateau of my Mother or
Some Like it Hot. If I had to select just one I would have to stick a pin.

Fantasia ! I saw it when I was 12 and fell in love with the fabulous hand drawn animation, the wonderful music especially Night on a Bare Mountain, morphing into the Ave Maria .I think I must have seen it at least 20 times since. It will suit all ages.

Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, the original Titanic movie, A Night to Remember ( far better than that dopey one where she stood on the end of the ship ) and I like The Sound of Music as well because it is good to watch with the young grandkids.

It has to be
It's a wonderful life...

Sleepless in Seattle - cheesy but a real feel good film accompanied by a great soundtrack.

InTheCove Wed 07-Sept-22 13:50:15

"Somethings Gotta Give" starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

I’ve seen it and loved it, except for the gut wrenching opening scene. I had the theme music on a cassette, gone now. Must see if the film is available on dvd, before they become obsolete.
Speaking of Liam Neeson, one if my favourite films is Lamb with Liam playing a priest who runs away with a young boy who was being abused at his orphanage/ school. Heartbreaking.

I loved The Honest Courtesan (also called Dangerous Beauty). It was a bit corny in places but a real love story.

cc Wed 07-Sept-22 13:55:03

Also Out of Africa and Gladiator, both with wonderful soundtracks.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 07-Sept-22 13:58:38

I’ve already mentioned my favourite older films but my current favourite is Elvis with Tom Hanks and Austin Butler(?)
Just fabulous. Could watch it over and over.

My favourite ever film is The Commitments but for a big audience I would show the Sound of Music. It's practically unknown here in Germany.

That’s perhaps because the Von Trapps were nazis.

Love this post!
However, too many that I really like to choose just one, including
Cinema Paradiso
Life is beautiful
Pans Labyrinth
The Great Escape
The Constant Gardener (loved the book too!)
Any film with Tom Hanks, Robert Di Niro and Frances McDormand in!
My DGD would say my favourite is Zootropolis, and I'm definitely partial to any Minion film smile
My 2 daughter's know all the words from Bugsy Malone and the Wizard of Oz...and I do mean ALL the words!!
I'm from a big family so could probably fill the Cinema...what a bargain, £120 for 100 people!!! Is this available at any Cineworld cinema do you know MawtheMerrier?

daffers Wed 07-Sept-22 14:05:29
