WATCHING ...Harry & Meghan Netflix
(1001 Posts)GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.
So have switched onto Netflix - wanted to see for myself what the 'fuss' is all about as many diverse opinions on this couple on here and other social platforms ...as well as the media with 'experts' who state this and that etc etc...
Wonder if he was modelling his behaviour on his grandpa? I understand he was part of the RF.
If Harry wants understanding that he made those racist comments when younger and now he has "learnt", and seen the error of his ways, then why can't he extend the same level of acceptance to his family - and ancestors in particular, who were "of their time"?
Britain did not have racial segregation like his new home of the USA.... is he going to criticise them too?
David Olusuga has written an excellent and balanced piece about H&M in today’s Observer. It is a far cry from the frenzied articles in the Tory press.
There's a very measured article about Harry by Hilary Rose in The Times Magazine. It seems Meghan is the only one who has succeeded in changing him from being a bit of a wastrel.
Absolutely agree with you Chestnut! I was so disgusted by the one trailer I have seen, of Megan doing a stupid curtsy whilst sat on a sofa, that I cancelled my Netflix subscription! She does not have the right to disrespect our late Queen in that way.
Absolutely not acceptable in any of the forces. Another discussion perhaps, but much work has gone on to make those organisations as accepting and open to diversity as possible. Daily Mail readers may note the reports from Court Martials routing out the bad. Shame people think this representative of the organisation when it’s very much the reverse.
This "people" doesn't think its representative of the forces. This "people" knows what soldiers and other members of the forces can be like and that they might use language the forces' hierarchies deplore and act on quickly.
Why did they have to act fast to root it out if it didn't exist?
Because it did/does exist particularly in the ranks unfortunately, along with sexism which rears its head in the armed services and the civilian services. Yes Prince Philip did make very unacceptable comments, but was undoubtedly told that in no uncertain terms as the comments ceased. So why did Harry feel it was acceptable when he was an adult when he must have understood that it was not.
"Of their time"
Time travel is not a thing, absolutely everyone who is alive exists now and should be able to keep up unless they are medically incapable
Their time is now
The examples used about Harry happened when he was 21 or so.
The DoE continued making "dubious" comments into his eighties, long after we all knew they were dubious, and no doubt someone had suggested he might tone them down a bit. I actually find it quite laughable that anyone would think that the DoE's comments ceased when someone told him how unacceptable they were.
Of course "our time is now" VS, but if you were born 100 years ago, your time would be "then" - don't you see that?
A couple of hundred years ago children were working in factories and being sent up chimneys. That was in their time. In some countries children are still put to work nowadays.
I know he wasn't over bright but surely as a modern young man, Prince Harry would have been only too aware that .Philips comments were unacceptable.

It doesn't seem odd to anyone that at one point in his life when he was young he thought that behaviour was OK surrounded by family and peers and after growing older and having different circles he now doesn't see that behaviour as ok?
Family?
Remember the group of friends he used to run with? 😲
They all grow up in the end.
The armed forces exactly represent any other group of 18-50 adults anywhere else in this country. The difference is that there is high public criticism of almost anything they do - unless in the wider communities’ best interest, of course. Their MoD has made concentrated efforts to quell the type of behaviours rampant throughout civilian life - misogyny, bullying, harassment, sexism, etc. things not always subject to action elsewhere. So when a soldier delivers your mail, responds at A&E or whatever strike action he’s giving his Christmas leave up to cover, think on about their politeness and composure.

What, that they've had to be trained to act that way because its not natural for them?
Sincerely ExperiencedNotOld, what I said about the language that was used in the forces isn't criticism of the forces or any of the people in it. Its just an observation that 20 years ago at least, the type of language used by soldiers engaged on active service might make my maiden aunt blush. Protestations that this was not the case won't convince, sorry. And the language that Harry may or may not have used didn't stand out as being unusual amongst the soldiers he was stationed with.

Agreed, Harry seems unwilling to make allowances for others that he wants everyone to make for him. People in the past were entrenched in the attitudes of their time just as they are today.
The world is constantly changing and things that were acceptable or tolerated even 10 or 20 years ago may not be now. The speed of change is getting ever faster. In centuries past it took 50 or 100 years for change. Now, due to the speed of media communication it happens almost in the blink of an eye. So attitudes and behaviour in the past would have stuck around for a century or more before anything changed.
And the language that Harry may or may not have used didn't stand out as being unusual amongst the soldiers he was stationed with
You don't know that for a fact.
Someone who was there must have reported him to senior officers as they were disgusted with him.
Homing in on one fellow cadet, the prince is heard to say, quietly: "Ah, our little Paki friend Ahmed."
This turned out to be Ahmed Raza Khan, now a captain in the Pakistani army, who was awarded the best overseas cadet prize at Sandhurst. If he heard the remark at the time, he did not react to it
Whatever, he's turned over a new leaf now.
But filming something like that, as he did, was stupid and it's always going to be on record.
Not just the language and not just in active service either. The language, the liquor consumption, the endless smoking all of which is seen as less acceptable now.
But try being in Plymouth or another port years ago when ships came in-better stay at home or risk being told they were just letting off steam!

nail/ head VioletSky!
My darling grandad born 1888 survived WW1 and Somme was delighted with and chatted wonderfully with my German MiL when he met her in 1975&76 before I wed !!!! He had truly reasons to dislike if not hate Germans but NO!! he kept up with times and adjusted as he went along , he adored all us kids cousins etc and treated all like his GK. He died in 1981 just before my first DS born. Being old is NO excuse for being a nasty old racist/ sexist/eejit!!
Flip side? Being self righteous appears to be de riguer among all the over20something 'toddlers' nowadays😂 blimey! They all think they've reinvented life!

She's done what all females do with a rampant healthy young fella with too much time money and hormones on his handsa- given him a focus and a release valve to dispel pent up pressures!! We call it " leading him around by the **" well, I'm sure we know what the last word is! It's Nature, it's the way of things.its what makes for settled existence taming aggressive behaviour often, not always, and can also mean that the young guy loses his identity as it is absorbed into the stronger entity of a determined female!! Oops went all science documentary then🤣🤣 good outcome is a happy chappy , flip side can mean isolation from all that went before in the battle for absolute control
He behaved like most closetted upper crust eejits do! Over compensation for a cosseted and controlled existence by trying far too hard to be badder, drunker, louder than those around them who look on in amusement at the show off toff making a fool of himself.seen it so many times! Thing is , when things get really edgy , they skidaddle back to the country pile.......all mouth and trousers usually
