Is anyone still listening or have you given up?

merlotgran Fri 30-May-25 21:18:55

It’ll be the lead up to a Foetal Alcohol Syndrome storyline.

Iam64 Fri 30-May-25 21:23:54

Not Spaghetti, same with me, a couple whose separation was initiated by mum, who was exasperated/angry/let down etc by immature behaviour. Over several months the Met and talked, focussed on protecting their young children as much as possible. Re-United 10 months later and 4 years on, seem happy and committed to each other and their chikdren 💙

eGJ Sat 31-May-25 17:44:54

Do hope NotS you are right. The couple did seem to becoming closer

If Peggy left a lot of money to a genuinely worthy cause instead of to her grasping relatives then well done her. Howrver, Lilian & Justin didn't ask the name or registration details of the charity, just took Arthur at his word. Could Arthur be a very skilled conman who's been working the Laurels and its residents for years?

merlotgran Wed 04-Jun-25 20:39:07

They didn’t even ask how much Peggy left.

NotSpaghetti Thu 05-Jun-25 10:53:01

How is it that people know they have £200 (or whatever) but haven't seen a will?
I'm not sure why there wasn't a will reading or something if it was done via a solicitor?

Am I way out of date?
We were sent a copy when we had a small bequest years ago.

Scribbles Thu 05-Jun-25 12:29:59

I think Peggy's accountant was the executor and he paid out the bequests but there's no need for a public will-reading like they do in old movies. What puzzles me is how he obtained probate so quickly; most people in real life have to wait weeks or months. But that's the Borsetshire magic at work, I suppose.smile

eGJ Fri 06-Jun-25 15:29:18

That Arthur episode was very strange. He does not appear next week and Crispin (called Father Crispin) needs Alan’s permission to take the service and it appears that things will not be straightforward (what a surprise) As NotS says beneficiaries are usually sent a copy of the bequests and it always takes an age! And a four month cruise!?😗

eGJ Thu 12-Jun-25 19:54:58

Sense prevailed! Alan conducted a dignified and correct Anglican funeral. What nonsense introducing Father Crispian. Did we know about Phoebe’s partner? Please remind me what/where she is now?!

merlotgran Thu 12-Jun-25 19:59:42

I think Phoebe works in Scotland and I don’t think a partner has been mentioned until now.

What’s the betting she returns to Ambridge in the near future?

eGJ Thu 12-Jun-25 21:54:30

Oh yes, I remember now merlot, after Oxford, she started out with re-wilding then going to Scotland to work with a friend.

NotSpaghetti Fri 13-Jun-25 08:34:10

The Crispin story sounded to me like the sort of thing the writers had bets on to see who could make getting rid of him the most ridiculous! grin

And there is no way that Peggy would have warmed to this ludicrous man!

Scribbles Fri 13-Jun-25 12:23:33

When Ambridge had a woman vicar, didn't Peggy start going to church somewhere else because she didn't approve of ordaining women?
If she couldn't cope with that, it seems highly unlikely she would have taken to the very peculiar Crispin.

merlotgran Fri 13-Jun-25 13:23:38

Peggy liked to make sure everyone knew about her charitable work. I doubt she would have made a sizeable donation to a dementia charity without ensuring she had some recognition. Her family would definitely have been consulted.

J52 Fri 13-Jun-25 14:21:40

I haven’t listened for ages, but just caught Peggy’s funeral. I heard Jill mentioned as her eulogy was being read.
What has happened to her? She wasn’t at the funeral, is she in a care home? Enlighten me please, thanks.

eGJ Fri 13-Jun-25 14:43:18

Jill is still at Brookfield with Leonard there too. Her alter ego Patricia Greene lives in a care home, but comes out occasionally to r3cord episodes. She still tries to rule the roost at Brookfield and still is perennially making Lemon Drizzle cake! Not sure why she did not deliver her memories of Peggy. That was not explained to us!
Love your idea notS about the #criptwriters bet😂

J52 Fri 13-Jun-25 14:48:09

Thank you eGJ for bringing me up to date. It does seem strange that she didn’t appear in the episode.

merlotgran Fri 13-Jun-25 15:38:54

Not sure why she did not deliver her memories of Peggy. That was not explained to us!

That’s because we’ve already heard them. She asked David to read her eulogy at the service after he read it back to her a few episodes ago.

eGJ Fri 13-Jun-25 15:48:53

Of course you’re quite right merlot and we DID hear her speak earlier in the week. I was too caught up with the memories of the dreadful Crispin that I forgot.

Delila Fri 13-Jun-25 18:00:02

Some episodes and some storylines fade almost instantly from my memory. Whole chunks go in one ear then straight out of the other for me. Some characters too. It never seems to make much difference though.

eGJ Fri 13-Jun-25 19:18:56

Phoebe and Brodie; a new enthusiasm for re-wilding from Justin; Dane and Helen I just can’t keep up!

Scribbles Wed 18-Jun-25 23:01:15

Just heard tonight's epi. A pretty silly storyline really but... well, aaaaaaaaahh. That's lovely💕.
(Soppy old romantic? Me? Never!)

I gave up listening to the Archers when it became preachy, and to the extent that it appeared to be teaching listeners how to behave.

The episode that really got me angry was some time ago, when an elderly man asked Lynda Snell about her Muslim house guests. When he enquired 'what kind are they?' his further elaboration of this question was just so awful and insulting that I found it hard to believe that it had been passed for broadcasting.

Added to this, the writers seemed to think that it was perfectly OK to depict an elderly, presumably middle class man as inevitably racist and crass. Thanks but no thanks, Archers writers. Perhaps take on board the average listener already knows the difference between right and wrong?

Delila Sun 22-Jun-25 18:03:21

Yes, I take your point, it was rather clumsy and patronising, but the racist remarks were thoroughly addressed for what they were by the character Linda Snell, and the man concerned was eventually publicly outed as the racist he was. All rather predictable.

Scribbles Sun 22-Jun-25 18:46:35

I'm wondering how long it will be before some chunk of Ambridge farmland is sold off for a €!**&@ solar farm.
With rewilding and beavers, that had to be next on the eco-agenda.
