Calling all Beatles fans.

I just discovered that today 2nd November at 2pm they are releasing their very final track called Now and Then which features cleaned up vocals of John Lennon plus lots of other magical effects thanks to AI. Here's a 12 min film about it:

And an article here:

Yes. I saw an item about this on The One Show last night. The Beatles symbolise my teenage years. I saw them live when they were 2nd on the bill to Roy Orbison on a coach trip from the youth club. Exciting days!

Thank you for those links.

I watched The One Show piece with tears in my eyes. When it got to the part about getting a bit of George into the song, I cracked. Not sure I can listen to the whole track.

I'm looking forward to hearing the whole thing on radio 2 at 2pm, - I think that's accurate....put me right if anyone knows for sure, please?

Sparklefizz Thu 02-Nov-23 10:33:59

henetha Correct ! smile

Thanks Sparklefizz.... smile

Dreary I’m afraid. Did Lennon write it? It has his hallmarks
😔

Sparklefizz Thu 02-Nov-23 14:26:28

Well.... that was a disappointment for me.

I did have a feeling that it would be.
What was that other one that they released about 30 years ago? (So good that I can’t remember it)
It was like that

Afraid I never was a fan of John Lennon.

twiglet77 Thu 02-Nov-23 14:33:43

Dull… and sounds like Lennon, but NOT like The Beatles.

Squiffy Thu 02-Nov-23 14:37:55

I don’t know what I was expecting, but I liked it - in a very nostalgic way! I agree that it was very ‘John’!

Sparklefizz Thu 02-Nov-23 14:41:59

It was a dirge, I thought. There was no musical 🎶 hook.

I was thinking that they did something similar a few years ago.

Was it called 'Free as a Bird'. That was a bit of a dirge.

I haven't heard the new one yet.

Just listened on headphones and found it hauntingly beautiful. I love it, and how amazing to hear John's voice after all this time. It sends shivers down your spine.

If you haven't heard it then it's here:

Quote from You Tube:
Now and Then's eventful journey to fruition took place over five decades and is the product of conversations and collaborations between the four Beatles that go on to this day. The long mythologised John Lennon demo was first worked on in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo as part of The Beatles Anthology project but it remained unfinished, partly because of the impossible technological challenges involved in working with the vocal John had recorded on tape in the 1970s. For years it looked like the song could never be completed. But in 2022 there was a stroke of serendipity. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used throughout the production of the documentary series Get Back, finally opened the way for the uncoupling of John’s vocal from his piano part. As a result, the original recording could be brought to life and worked on anew with contributions from all four Beatles. This remarkable story of musical archaeology reflects The Beatles’ endless creative curiosity and shared fascination with technology. It marks the completion of the last recording that John, Paul and George and Ringo will get to make together and celebrates the legacy of the foremost and most influential band in popular music history.

I may be alone here - and forgive me - but I don’t think it sounded much like John Lennon.

HettyBetty Thu 02-Nov-23 15:10:55

I love it, but I'm a huge Beatles fan anyway. So many moments in the melody and the harmonies which could only be theirs. Traces of so many of their other songs but still distinctive.

I've been listening to Imagine a lot recently, John Lennon's voice is beautiful.

So grateful to the people who had the skills to make this happen.

AGAA4 Thu 02-Nov-23 15:17:34

Thank you Chestnut. I found it very hauntingly beautiful too. Reminds me of some of their earlier releases.

George argued against releasing it years ago because he said it was substandard. It is a sweet song but, had it been released by an unknown group I think it would be ignored. It is a huge nostalgia fest though, and I’d forgotten just how big the Beatles were back then and what an event it was when they released a new album.

Where is Kate1949? She is the biggest Beatles fan on Gransnet and I think she'll love it.

I think the reason George disliked it was because it wasn't any good back then. They couldn't separate John's voice from the piano (see what I've written above) but now, many years later the technology makes it possible. So what George said 25 years ago is not really relevant to the finished track.

For true Beatles fans, here is the raw unedited version of John tinkering on the piano, no special effects!

Some people seem to prefer this, it's just simple and full of feeling.

It may have been left on the shelf for 50 years but I still think it's better than anything Ed Sheeran has done. I can't stay awake through anything of his!

Joseann Thu 02-Nov-23 17:49:10

I didn't like it as much as their other songs, although I thought it was cleverly done.

merlotgran Thu 02-Nov-23 18:21:18

I think John Lennon’s writing talent flew out the window when he got together with Yoko Ono.

henetha Thu 02-Nov-23 18:28:37

Definitely not quite as good as many Beatles songs, but I still enjoyed it.
Just a lovely bit of nostalgia for us fans.
