I never watched this when it was aired - only ever saw bits of it on Gogglebox.

However, I finally gave in to all the hype and have watched the box set on iplayer.

Apart from Pam & Mick, I don't really find any of the other characters either particularly likeable, or particularly interesting. I don't hate it but I can think of a lot more programmes I'd rather watch.

Are there any diehard fans on here? I'm sure I must be in the minority given all the fuss about the Christmas programme.

It was lovely!

Very enjoyable and also very moving.

Shinamae Wed 25-Dec-24 23:27:50

Made me cry, in a good way 🥲

I don't understand why they couldn't make another one.

My daughter and I were sure the coach was going to come off the road and kill them all 😂.

I don't quite get the black humour, I must admit.
Making a joke about finding a dismembered body in Essex was a bit much for me. But I might watch it on my own and see if it improves.

I thought it was lovely.

I thought the story would pick up immediately from where the last one left off but then continuity might have been difficult as everyone has aged plus it gave scope for other relationships to have shifted and developed.

Other than Ruth Jones as the magnificent Nessa, Larry Lamb was the star of the show for me. His speech about Smithy had me welling up.

Loved it. Good ending. I have always thought Nessa was amazing.

Anything with the unfunny James Corden is obviously directed towards the very lowest common denominator......

Bridie22 Thu 26-Dec-24 07:37:52

Loved it, ended as I hoped it would.

Is there any need to be so offensive? People have been saying they enjoyed it - how does that make them the ‘very lowest common denominator’?

I liked that there was a gap in the timeline. It would stand alone for new viewers, but referenced old jokes and events like the fishing trip for veterans. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as funny as I’d expected. I think it was over hyped, which often happens, and can spoil things.

Having said that, it was a good watch at the end of Christmas Day. Not too demanding, but good family viewing. I think the Jones/Corden writing duo is excellent at one liners that almost slip under the radar, and wouldn’t be picked up by children or the easily offended, but are hilarious to those who do notice them.

What is wrong with you? Yet another obnoxious remark about a very popular entertainer.
And as for the comment about ‘the lowest common denominator - words fail me.

You never had the balls to return to your thread about Sir Cliff Richard did you? I don’t suppose you will return here either.

If you don’t like it mae13, At the end of the day... When all's said and done... You could just do the full Gareth …D'ya know what I mean?"

theworriedwell Thu 26-Dec-24 08:41:40

We're all different. Pam is my least favourite character but then Alison Steadman is my least favourite character in anything.

theworriedwell Thu 26-Dec-24 08:43:36

I loved the final episode. Almost cried.

Jaxjacky Thu 26-Dec-24 08:48:09

The best.

Ever the fun sponge. 🧽 You must be in need of new one by now.

So in the first twenty minutes I thought, oh they should have left this alone, it's not as good, but after that I think it found it's way again andby the end I loved it. Nessa is brilliant, just the star of the show.

Parsley3 Thu 26-Dec-24 09:39:17

Loved it. Worth watching for the unique character that is Nessa.

TerriBull Thu 26-Dec-24 09:41:16

After requests to watch it from a couple of guests, we put it on, I realised when 16 year old"Baby Neil" appeared that we hadn't seen it since he was an actual baby, we somehow got out of the viewing habit. I really enjoyed it, I'm not a fan of James Cordon, but he was good last night. The real star of the show for me is, and always was, Ruth Jones's Nessa with her deadpan delivery of some really funny moments.

So You think Alan Bennett's The History Boys is aimed at the very lowest common denominator?
