The Au Pair

Just started watching this on Channel 5. It's rather watchable but not very believable.

However I'm so involved with it we're on the third episode, the whole series is streaming on My 5.

I’m taping it. Had two au pairs when son was young and I had an international dating agency before it became a thing! One was a Spanish Gothic who got up in the night and choked on biscuits. We did feed her well. Then we had Fiorella from Italy who ate more than my six foot husband with a voracious appetite. Every time he sneaked to the fridge for a midnight snack, she beat him to it. Then I stumbled upon a junior Welsh nanny training to be a proper nanny at college, seeking work experience. She was only 16 but perfect. My advice would be give it a try if you have no choice but to work.

Father had "dangerously low blood sugar." They appeared to give him more insulin which would have undoubtedly killed him. I know that he need glucose administered quickly with a glucagon pen. People believe what they see on TV. This could actually cause someone to die needlessly. I have lost count of the number of times I have sat by my son's hospital bed because of hypoglycemia. These sort of dramas need to get their medical facts correct even if everything else is make believe. It made me so angry.

I wasn’t impressed. Too far-fetched. May continue to watch to see why she is acting as she does but not really bothered.

Oh Nuttynanna2,
Sorry to hear that. I won’t be able to watch the programme for a few days.

Nuttynanna2 Mon 10-Mar-25 23:35:05

Thank you Catterygirl. I have complained to Ofcom. I felt so strongly. Ignorance of insulin dependent diabetes is frightening.

I kept waiting for Jill Halfpenny to pop up as she so frequently does in these overwrought Channel 5 thrillers.

Does Vera know that Aiden has another wife and children?

And they live in a posh house, but don’t seem to possess an electric toothbrush.

Watched it all. It's not going to win any awards but it was watchable. To me, anyway. Mr. Rula did keep nodding off.

lol - I always ask myself the inevitable multiple choice question with a Channel 5 drama -

Who is most likely to appear in this programme?

1. Jo Joyner

2. Sally Lindsay

3. Jill Halfpenny

(I gave up after about half an hour, found myself checking out Fb on my phone - always a certain sign of complete boredom)

So far it seems a bit silly and far fetched. I hope I get to find out why she needs retribution, and on whom.

Astitchintime Tue 11-Mar-25 08:50:27

I started to watch it but decided that cleaning the air fryer was far more entertaining.

It is ridiculous and far fetched. And the last 2 episodes are far more ridiculous and far fetched.

🙉 oh no!

henetha Tue 11-Mar-25 10:06:45

I found it predictable. Husband; wife has problems; evil Au Pair has designs on the husband; etc, etc.....Not sure I want to see any more. But I like Sally Bretton, so I might.

granfromafar Tue 11-Mar-25 22:09:02

Agree with those saying it's far-fetched and ridiculous, but as with previous Channel 5 dramas, it's compulsive viewing. Tried to watch episode 3 on My5 but it wouldn't load properly, so will just have to wait till tomorrow!

Just watched episode. I love the house. All very easy on the eye. Totally ridiculous of course. Sally Bretton's character straight out of Beyond Paradise.

Oh, not from Not Going Out?
Is the husband Lee Mack?

I might watch.

Both glycogen and insulin can be injected by syringe or pen. They didn't say what they were actually injecting so l don't know why you've assumed they injected the wrong medication.

Well, Episode 2 was pretty daft.

So when Zoe fell, she dashed off to hospital as she was worried about the baby. She drove herself, accompanied of course by the murderous au pair, they sat for a while in the waiting area, then had the scan, then drove home.

How long did all this take? Because when they arrived home, her DH just wandered over, and said laughingly ‘where have you been hiding?’ or similar. As if she had just been to the loo or something, not an emergency dash to the hospital.

As for the attack on the goth daughter whose party it was!

When she trundled her off to the woods, she looked like ET on his bike! Near death, but then suddenly arose and ran off to mum and dad, conveniently just turned up for the rescue.

Wonder why on earth David Suchet agreed to be in such a load of twaddle.

Just what I thought Calendargirl - I’ve also never seen anyone have an ultrasound through their hospital gown before!

Oh yes, that's what I thought!

henetha Wed 12-Mar-25 10:46:54

I thought last night's episode was better than the first, so I'll stick with it even though it's daft.
Sally bretton was in Not going out and in Beyond paradise.

Shelflife Wed 12-Mar-25 11:27:28

I am watching but it is so far fetched! The image of Sandrine running away with Amber stashed in a wheelbarrow - legs sticking out was farsical!! As for the ultrasound taken through a hospital gown !!!??
Having said that I will continue watching.

OldFrill Wed 12-Mar-25 12:45:52

If you take it seriously you'll be very disappointed. I wasn't going to watch after the first episode but decided to binge watch the other episodes and we had a good few belly laughs as the plot became ever more incredulous. It was so bad it was entertaining. No adverts either which made it much faster to get through.

Warmglovesandsocks Wed 12-Mar-25 15:17:12

Loved it. Binge watched through 3 episodes. I don’t care it’s far fetched, good entertainment value!
