To wonder why famous people feel they have to over share personal stuff

No not another one about Harry!

I was just reading an article about Katherine Ryan stand up comic, bantering with Jonathan Ross, never a good idea given his track record. I stopped watching him ages ago I really don't like him. Anyway back to Katherine Ryan, admittedly I've only ever seen her on WDYTYA so I can't say whether she's funny or not It was reported among other things , she said this "her husband would sometimes abandon her to play golf as she has only 3 holes as opposed to 18" If a man said that I'd regard him as a sexist pig, so is it any better to hear that from a woman. Personally I don't think so, nor do I find such crassness remotely funny, just poor taste.

I'd be interested to know what others think.

Do we still use the term "ladies" in the context of stand up comics it rather conjures up the smelling salts of a bygone era, I won't say pearl clutching because these days wearers of pearls brings to mind Harry Styles, who is often pictured with a string or two round his neck, whether he clutches them who knows?

For some context, this performance was on tv not in a club which would presumably have only adults in the audience. The programme went out at 9 pm. Casting my mind back to when my children were say older primary school age, on a Saturday evening they may well have been in the living room with us as around that time as I imagine other kids might be with their parents. With that in mind, Katherine Ryan's banter included how she still gives her husband blow jobs as well as what I already posted. Yes I'd say that was massively over sharing from either a male or female comedian you can take your pick.

Isn’t it rather good that we are all different, laugh at different things, like different things?

If we were all the same the world would be so boring…

I would love a good pearl necklace. No vulgarity implied.

I have my Grandmas, I have had to have it restrung, my mum brought me pearl stud earrings for my 40th, I often wear them.

Comedic license

They make these stories up for a laugh and they target specific audiences

Lots of different comedians available according to taste

Blondiescot Sun 08-Jan-23 16:26:17

I'm tempted to refer to the other type of 'pearl necklace', but then I'd be leaving myself open to accusations of vulgarity!

Dickens

Kalu

Dickens I wear a fitted cropped cashmere twin set and pearls with denims. Works for me. There is no rule to say one should stop wearing pearls.

No, but you mustn't clutch them grin

Actually, fitted and cropped sounds rather nice - a bit different from my mother's shapeless and baggy ensemble!

I am never a clutcher 😂

they make these stories up for laughs no shit Sherlock 😂

Women are as funny as men but they’re not that great at ‘stand up’
Victoria wood is the exception of course.

JaneJudge Sun 08-Jan-23 16:37:17

This is the character she has chosen, created and grown in order to make money through comedy. Yes it's vulgar and rude and off the cuff but so is a lot of other stand up comedians work.I don't find her offensive at all. I think there are some double standards wrt male v female comedians

I'm going to have to mention Janey Godley but I know I'm going to just light the fuse under some people.

I too thought it read she was joking, not over sharing her private life. Looking forward to the new series with her and Romesh Ranganathan.

I like Joan Rivers

I have just found some of her voiceovers of Nicola Sturgeon, very funny.

Kate1949 Sun 08-Jan-23 17:20:48

Victoria Wood was funny. Hylda Baker was funny. Joan Rivers was funny. This is just my opinion. I have never thought French and Saunders are funny, either together or separately, nor Sarah Millican, or Mel and Sue. Comedians like Michael 'I pull a silly face therefore I am funny' McIntyre are not for me. Each to their own. Our daughter loves McIntyre, Jimmy Carr and others. It's all personal taste.

Fleurpepper Sun 08-Jan-23 17:23:42

Whether you like some and not others, that is their job, to make us laugh. Sometimes it is crude, and will offend some people. Jane Godley is indeed hilarious- but she is, like many comedians or comediennes, a bit 'Marmite'.

But the title of this thread just does not apply.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 08-Jan-23 17:26:04

Blimey I need to get out more, agreeing with Fleurpepper and volver on the same thread, same day 🙀🙀🙀

I too think there are double standards for men v women in the comedy world.
I do find Ross quite an unpleasant character though and I am surprised he still has so much air time.
