Words that make you shudder

My daughter’s partner cannot stand the word ‘moist’. If you use it to describe a cake, for instance, it would quite put him off!
Do you have a word you hate, and is there a proper reason for your feelings?

Fur Baby for a dog.......Bubba for a baby.....and Function Room, which sounds like a place for something I don't want to witness. I wouldn't buy slacks.....and I hope it's a long time before I cross the rainbow bridge! ?

Another thought .....

The word crematorium shortened to the crem.

Lucca Thu 11-Mar-21 22:35:52

I’m with OP’s relative. Can’t bear “moist”.

Have had to get used to “toilet”
Can’t bear hubby and hon
,LOL used by grown ups,
and “all the trimmings” makes me scream.

Spinnaker Thu 11-Mar-21 23:06:53

Detest the words masticate and pregnant.

The sentence that starts with "the truth of the matter is..." really does make me tense up. You always know it'll be anything but the truth !

nanna8 Thu 11-Mar-21 23:33:15

Lavatory, lavvie both ugh
I always say ‘loo’, don’t like toilet,either
When we were young we used to say we were going for a slash which sounds uncouth, looking back.
Don’t like Chrissie for Christmas
Hubby is vile, so is sweetie when someone calls you that. Actually it is vile in any circumstances. They’re lollies ,aren’t they ?

welbeck Fri 12-Mar-21 00:19:42

panty/panties/panty-hose.
all sound a bit sleazy, the sort of words some men use about women, as in soft porn world. women would never use those words of their clothing. not in uk.

Calendargirl Fri 12-Mar-21 07:53:54

Don’t like other women addressing their friends with babe, hun, my lovely, sweet, anything like that.

Also dislike fur babies, and people referring to their dogs or other animals as girls or boys, they are animals for goodness sake!

DillytheGardener Fri 12-Mar-21 08:02:25

Words

Fur babies
Moist
Panties
Passed instead of died
Inspiration
Hubby
Quirky (sets my teeth on edge)

Phrases

“Just have to get on with it” ( hate hate hate this one)

Grandma70s Fri 12-Mar-21 08:11:15

Lounge, when referring to a sitting/living room in a private house. It’s all right in the context of an airport or hotel.

GrandmaTrisha Fri 12-Mar-21 08:14:56

Brew........
