Hi all,

As of this afternoon many of you will have noticed a new consent form pop up. Apologies for the late notice - we'd hoped to get a post up earlier to give you advance warning but our resources were focused on getting it up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As a responsible publisher we follow the recommendations of the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK) - here's a bit more information about them.

The IAB asks that we allow users to say if you consent to your data being used or not. We've been doing this for quite a while now and this is the pop-up you would have previously seen when you came to Gransnet.

What's happened is that as of tomorrow the IAB is brining in a new standard that publishers have to comply with. The new standard gives the user even more choice over the data that can be collected and used - which is why you are now seeing a new pop-up with far more privacy options.
Whilst it may look a bit OTT it's actually been designed by the IAB to make it better for users and give you more control.

So please don't be worried about this new pop-up - it will in fact give you more information and choice over your privacy.

Hope this helps smile

Lara, thank you for explaining,
however it is not the most user- friendly form if you don’t mind me saying.

Especially on gransnet, it would be very helpful if each option had a clear YES and NO box and we could type YES or NO and feel we knew what we had subscribed to.

Also an “Are you sure” option and each person could review what they had chosen before pressing CONFIRM.

Elegran Fri 14-Aug-20 16:10:25

That is true, Puzzler It is not clear whether blue means consent and grey refusal, or the other way round. I took it that grey meant the same as greyed-out does - not available, or not consented to - but it could equally be the opposite.

"Yes I agree" or "No thank you" would be far better.

Chewbacca Fri 14-Aug-20 16:11:32

Agreed Puzzler, it's a long winded and unclear process. And some of them give no option to opt out.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 14-Aug-20 16:16:15

Unfortunately a lot of that is dictated by the IAB so is out of our hands. However, hopefully they'll get similar feedback across the board so some more user-friendly tweaks may be forthcoming (we'll give you advance notice next time!)

How do you access the form? I clicked on something this morning without checking as I presumed it was just a repeat of all the other access forms I have agreed to previously. I would like to check what I’m liable for.

BlueBelle Fri 14-Aug-20 16:43:20

I just said no to everything ?

NotAGran55 Fri 14-Aug-20 16:46:06

How do we get back to the original firm please ? I clicked thinking it was the usual cookie button .

MaizieD Fri 14-Aug-20 16:52:01

These things usually say that you can edit/change your choices at any time (or words to that effect). I don't recall seeing that on the new pop up.

Is there an option for that, Lara?

silverlining48 Fri 14-Aug-20 17:05:52

I hope I said no to everything it really wasn’t clear, I put it on grey. Is that correct!?

BlueBelle Fri 14-Aug-20 17:14:10

Everything that had a coloured button by it if you touched that button it went grey so I presumed that to be a NO
Am I wrong ?

BlueBelle Fri 14-Aug-20 17:14:44

Same ‘silverLining’

toscalily Fri 14-Aug-20 17:17:35

Earlier today I clicked on the form thinking it was a variation on the usual cookies type of form, apparently it is not so I too would like to know how to access the original form please. There are now several threads regarding this new consent form therefore would it be too much to ask that they be combined to stop even more confusion. I would also like to say that I think the introduction without prior warning is unacceptable as most "considerate" websites that I use including banking give prior warning of downtime, upgrades and modifications so what justification can there be for gransnet not to do so?

Pittcity Fri 14-Aug-20 17:29:46

If you clear your cookies etc. the form will reset and pop up again for you to read through.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-Aug-20 17:33:42

I just closed all pages and deleted history on my iPhone then logged into GN the consent page came up and I changed all settings to grey...........I assume they are now off will I have to do this each time I log-in?

Lucca Fri 14-Aug-20 17:35:59

Clear your cookies ?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 14-Aug-20 17:41:23

Hi, yes you will be able to amend your choices. Our tech is going to get back to me shortly with that. In the meantime, yes you can clear your cookies to see the form again. If you google 'how to clear cookies' for chrome/safari (whichever browser you're on) and you should get useful instructions how to do so. But we will get back to you asap about how to access the form again anyway.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 14-Aug-20 17:52:29

And yes to those who asked about the grey vs blue. The grey toggle indicated no, the blue, yes to consent.

DonnaFHSheridan Fri 14-Aug-20 17:53:30

Hi, FH here (with a new username; I flounced as I was bewildered), are things the same as before the form, but we now have to consent? X

Lucca Fri 14-Aug-20 17:58:12

Mamma mia.....

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 14-Aug-20 17:58:30

Should all be explained in the OP FH. Will update with any more info as and when we know more smile

Chewbacca Fri 14-Aug-20 18:08:34

Lucca grin

DiscoDancer1975 Fri 14-Aug-20 18:11:24

I’m another who needed their husband on the job?. I would never have worked out grey was ‘ no’ and ‘blue’ was yes. Really confusing!!

DanniRae Fri 14-Aug-20 18:18:21

Glad I chose grey! But don't really understand what I was saying "NO" to............can we have a simple explanation, please?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 14-Aug-20 18:22:10

Hello, for those who want to change or check their settings you can click on 'privacy settings' in the footer on desktop and right at the bottom of the screen on mobile. If you click on this you will be able to amend your choices (although bear in mind that choosing consent does allow publishers to serve you with more relevant/useful content).

Whew! Hope that answers all your questions for now. Gin o'clock for me ?. Happy evenings all! And many thanks for your patience on this.
