Realistic fashion advice

I've just looked through the advice GN offers to over 50s on how to wear certain fashions, so why do all the models look like lovely slim women in their 30s? Surely this site should offer us some more realistic images to give us some good suggestions - you certainly can't find them anywhere else.
I'm mid 60s, 5' 2" and overweight, I'm not frumpy but would love to look a little more stylish but no one offers realistic images. Through reading comments from GNs I discovered the joy of legging/jeggins and tunics and actually got some very positive comments from people when I started wearing them. We all seem to know that we need longish tunics that cover tummy and bum but all the images are of slim women with waistlines like I had 30 years ago.
Does anyone agree with me that we'd like GN to offer us something more realistic, I think their images could be from MN? Maybe GN could be a trendsetter here and who knows the media may start to notice we exist!

NotTooOld Wed 07-Jun-17 12:07:06

Agree, Cagsy.

MawBroon Wed 07-Jun-17 12:14:15

I don't agree.
While I am happy to pick up style tips from others or new labels I might not have known, as believe my "style"(ha ha) is my own and some generic advice from GN (who, exactly?) would not interest me .
Very often there is a blog or article by somebody on looking fab at fifty/sexy at sixty/super at seventy but none of them tell me anything I don't know!
There are loads of threads on Style and Fashion, look at those for inspiration, but please don't let's expect GN (HQ?) to tell us what to wear.

That's a bit strong, MawBroon. I think the OP was only suggesting that more realistic images would be appropriate. We are not all 5'6" and a size 10. What looks good on a woman of that size is not going to look good on a larger person. Totally agree with you about having one's own style, though. We should all wear exactly what we want, what we feel happy in. Personally I'm a great hater of 'mother of the bride' clothes. Yuk!

MawBroon Wed 07-Jun-17 13:02:35

Didn't mean to be harsh!! I too am 60's, overweight and enjoy my clothes.
I take the point of "realistic" but still think there is lots of scope if OP reads through the assorted Style and Fashion threads.

I agree with Maw. I'm nearly 70 and have settled on my style after years of getting it wrong. I also have daughters shock

I look at these style guides, including the ones on GN whenever I feel like having a giggle. By the time we are old enough to be on Gransnet we are such a wide variety of sizes and shapes that no generic advice like that given here is likely to be of use to more than one in ten of us.

I am not overweight but I am pear shape and have little or no gap between waist and hip, so I immediately ignore any advice that includes a neat waistline like the wrap round dresses because anything emphasising the waist emphasises my bum, and for me, that is not a good look.

Then there is the LBD, I haven't owned one since I was about 20 when I realised that black and my pale, yellowy complexion do not go together. I got fed up with being asked if I was feeling unwell every time I wore black

I expect most GN members looking at the recommendations will have their own tale to tell.

I wear what I like and feel comfortable in and DD and DDiL have given my the thumbs up for being stylish. The clothes that best suit us are the ones we feel comfortable and confident wearing.

I agree with you Cagsy!!

I agree with MawBroon

Nice to have a little bit of inspiration now and again.
Especially if you have to change your
'usual style'

I'm going to summer birthday party.
It starts at 4pm outdoors weather permitting then indoors for buffet and disco.
I would normally wear a knee length dress
but this isn't possible with a large swollen ankle.
Shoes are also a problem.

So I really could do with. as I said some inspiration.
I have been searching online and in department stores for the past 6 Weeks.
So any advice or tips from GNers would be most welcome.

A pair of white straight trousers (or black if you don't do white) and a caftan top from the likes of EAST, Phase 8 or Joules.
Wedges or sandals, bring a wrap in case it turns cool.
Next?

MawBroon Wed 07-Jun-17 18:56:05

M&S Per Una do nice white jeans with a tiny bit of bling and EAST have lots of lovely necklaces and also scarves to complete the look.

Cherrytree59 Wed 07-Jun-17 19:11:45

Thanks Maw I have some new white trousers so I think its the top half I need to concentrate on.
I tend to wear a scarf as have nasty scar on my neck which jewellery tends to draw attention to (probably just my insecurity,)

If it rains then will opt for a black trouser.
I do have some wide leg plain black but would need different style top .confused

I too suffer from swollen ankles now Cherrytree (gone up 2 shoe sizes in the last couple of years) so I have just bought a pair of white Hotter 'Mabel' canvas lace-ups... ie posh 'plimmies. Thank goodness fashion/style is so much more relaxed these days... I knew they would be fine with jeans and jeggings but ,having tried them on with a couple of floaty, longer length skirts, they look great.
I've also just bought a denim jacket (having stupidly taken my old 'faithful' to the charity shop when I hit 60), which again I plan to wear with afore-mentioned floaty skirts, as well as jeggings. At 73, a few pounds over weight, and on the short side, I love the way we are not bound by fashion, age or occasion.
And the bonus? The Hotter plimmies are so comfy grin. When I think of all those evenings in my youth with my poor little tootsies crammed into stilettos I thank God we're at last released from the fashion police.

MawBroon Wed 07-Jun-17 19:55:49

Hotter "Angel" wedges are also nice for smart (hint, go up half a size but keep the insoles in, if you have swollen ankles, feet or legs)
They come in bright red, beige, dark blue and black. I bought a pair in PINK last summer in their sale!

NotTooOld Wed 07-Jun-17 20:49:53

Ooh, some good tips here. I bought some Hotter shoes earlier this year. They are flowered canvas and have a loose in-sole. Is this in-sole meant to be removable does anyone know? And if so, why?

NotTooOld Wed 07-Jun-17 20:51:30

Next question for MawBroon. What to wear to a wedding when you don't do dresses, please?

annsixty Wed 07-Jun-17 21:01:24

My friend had a friend who I met a few times. She was over 80 when I first met her, she was very elegant and attractive and said she couldn't imagine why people of her age would wear Hotter shoes, they were for old people. She died very suddenly about 18 months ago so never succumbed to old age.
I feel the same and wont even look at Hotter shoes.

kittylester Wed 07-Jun-17 21:03:28

The last wedding I went to I wore white wide leg trousers, a short bright linen top and wedges with big jewellery.

kittylester Wed 07-Jun-17 21:05:47

Moshulu shoes are comfy and more stylish than hotter. Also Lotus are good.

MawBroon Wed 07-Jun-17 21:23:55

Trousers!
If you are like me and don't like showing your legs, silk trousers and silk jacket from Hampstead Bazaar (a favourite of Judi Dench) I wore raspberry silk trousers and a sort of flowery patterned jacket to DD3's wedding
For DD2's I wore a knee length Indian coat from EAST, blue velvet trousers from Lands End and a sort of chiffon top from Mint Velvet.
For DD1 I wore a pewter metallic silk/linen knee length coat and trousers suit from Wall.
If you are size 16 or over, look at Box 2 for lovely occasion wear!

Cherrytree59 Wed 07-Jun-17 21:30:19

willsmadnan great that you hve found some comfortable shoes.
My ankles are right pain in the butt

Sounds lovely kitty I forgot about moshulu .

Off to check their Shoes out smile

Deedaa Wed 07-Jun-17 21:38:12

I've only discovered Hotter shoes in the last year and I love them. So comfortable! That said I only wear them with trousers, I've got a nice pair of Per Una suede wedges that I wear with dresses.

My go to outfit tends to be wide linen trousers with a bright top. My ankles are too swollen for skirts unless the weather is hot enough for me not to care grin

Cherrytree59 Wed 07-Jun-17 21:52:00

Checked out moshulu they have some lovely wedge sandals in lots of beautiful colours .
So now I just need to organise top half and then should be able to order some sandals to match or complement outfit.

My homework is to take Maws style advice and check out East and Hampstead bazaar.
I love the sound of your Indian coat..
I am size 16 top and size 14 bottom - bit like an upside down pear.hmm
So will also check out Box2 not heard of them .

GNers are wonderfulsmile

Jalima1108 Wed 07-Jun-17 22:45:39

Well, I am totally fed up because I went out today to try to buy a dress - not normally being a dress person I'm not sure what suits me and, having put some weight on over the winter because of enforced inactivity I found that NOTHING SUITS ME! I need something that skims over my tum or ideally a top and skirt (matching if possible).

I went to find East as I always liked their clothes but it had shut down.
Shoes are a problem too.
I came home with a pair of trainers hmm

I AM FED UP - MAINLY WITH MYSELF

Sorry for shouting, I don't like it when people shout but I am frustrated.
