More royal pomp and circumstance.

I genuinely felt upset and then angry at today's royal event in Edinburgh. How much of our money did it cost?
We have already had a fortune spent on the Queen's funeral and the King's coronation at a time when families
can't afford to feed their children and people are waiting for years for essential medical treatment. When the BBC commentator announced that the eyes of the world were on Scotland I had to turn off the TV.

I think we all need to give King Charles time to make the many changes which I believe he has already started, before we start bitching about how he spends public money.
Let's face it who would want to be Prime Minister and when will we learn to stop dissing the royal family!

His grandmother, the Queen Mother, was Scottish, so he's a quarter Scottish.

Sigh.

I love all the pomp and circumstance….

I respect Hamza Yusuf for attending the ceremony and behaving with absolute correctness and courtesy throughout, despite being a Scots Nationalist and a Republican. I also think that the Scots Greens were silly to miss an opportunity to meet a monarch who has been dedicated to environmental causes for decades, long before they were fashionable. They might have had a fruitful discussion with him for the future of the environment in Scotland.

Complete waste of money. The country is in dire straits. We need every penny for nhs and children in poverty and homelessness among other ills.
Royals should put a hand in their own vast pockets and pay for these ridiculous events themselves if that's what they want.

Callistemon21 Thu 06-Jul-23 20:03:01

Sigh again.

The country can afford all these things, the government just needs the will to fund them.

We need a Head of State, preferably apolitical and no H of S should be funding themselves for carrying out what we, as a nation, require of them.

Yes, Hamza was very polite, welcoming and behaved impeccably, putting his own feelings to one side.

Agree!

The "united kingdom" comprises only the TWO countries who signed the Treaty of Union that is England ,who engineered it and Scotland who was sold out by the "parcel of rogues" Scottish elite against the will of the people .
Wales and NI were aquired in different ways,

I like a bit of pomp. And circumstance.

Wales doesn't want him, anyway, he has given up his Welsh house, so that shows how much he thinks of Wales and its residents.

Anniebach Thu 06-Jul-23 22:30:27

William didn’t want the farmhouse

Callistemon21 Thu 06-Jul-23 22:35:30

Wales doesn't want him

Um, do you mean some people in Wales are not keen on the monarchy?
Others may be.

I don’t think that’s the case. William has said he would prefer to stay locally in whichever part of Wales he might be visiting so the farmhouse would be surplus to requirements.

One minute the monarchy owns too many homes, when they do decide to downsize then someone, somewhere nearby feels snubbed 😁

Yes. And this post is a perfect example of that.

Wales doesn't want him (so they should be grateful that he is not keeping a house in Wales)
But then
he has given up his Welsh house, so that shows how much he thinks of Wales and its residents
So in giving up a house that he doesn’t need, and preferring to stay locally in places he is visiting, he is in the wrong again, in the same post.
As my mum is wont to say,
He can’t do right for doing wrong.

I tripped over this by chance vivvq and share your response. If KC3 wants to give QCC yet another 'grand day out' it should come out of his very deep and largely untaxed pockets - not ours. I wonder how many free school meals could have been funded.

Other monarchies survive without this constant parade of subservience.

If the eyes of the world really were on Scotland, I suspect they would be expressing something other than admiration.

Are you really blaming the Queen for the King following his family traditions?!

Perhaps he should buy her a vintage campervan like Susan Calman's!
They could have lots of Grand Days Out 😂

The UK is not a ‘poor’ country. As with many rich countries the wealth is unevenly distributed. That is more the government though. The public can enjoy watching ceremonies, at least they get that back, a free show. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

Just listening to the News, droning on about the HS2 project with spiralling costs.

£4.9 billion quoted, and still counting.

Perhaps some of that money could be more usefully spent on the NHS, poverty and homelessness as it will end up another huge waste of money, benefitting very few in the long run.

Leave the Royals alone.

We live in the United Kingdom, that is what Kings do. I do however wonder how members of the royal family can put on their empathy faces and promise a better world to those less fortunate whilst wearing THE most expensive attire and attending THE most expensive events. Perhaps it is time everything was slimmed right down including those incredibly rich people who really should do so much more for charity to support the poorer people of our land. After all they are happy enough to live on British soil.

Bijou Fri 07-Jul-23 11:51:18

There were posts saying that Charles has Scottish blood. But Only from the Queen Mother. Before that there was all German right from George the first. George fifth had to change their name in the First World War.
Victoria a German, married a German. Prince Philip was mainly Greek.
Who pays for the life guards and all the horses who attend these ceremonial occasions ?
