We're really happy to read threads like this and know that the site is hitting the mark with you. But we also know that for all of you who are regular posters, there are many more who, for whatever reason, haven't yet joined in on the discussions and we wondered what could be done to make the site more welcoming to newbies? If you are new (or can remember back to when you were) what barriers do you think users may come across that stop them from joining in the chat? And if you are a lurker (although we prefer to think of you as reader) if you're happy to post just this once to let us know what stops you usually, we'd really appreciate it. Any insight you can give us be most welcome and rewarded with a virtual bottle of wine grin
Thanks
GNHQ

Phew, I couldn't get through the door! There's quite a crush outside of people wanting to join. But it's OK in here with Marydoll and Sodapop at the registration desk. Who's got the copy of our manifesto?
I'm not sure I like 'cliquettes' - yes, a GranBand - oh hang on Phil Spector's here and says we can re-record He's So Fine.

Gaunt47 Mon 20-Jan-20 16:14:53

Sorry Sally B392, I meant to say welcome. But you do realise that to join the Cliquettes you have to have stalled a thread or made the last post inadvertently? So get posting smile

Marydoll Mon 20-Jan-20 16:26:37

We are truly a clique, we have managed to totally derail this thread and probably kill it!
Do you think GNHQ may have a word with us? ?

This has really cheered me up, feeling a bit low, thanks all.

Gaunt47 Mon 20-Jan-20 16:40:41

Sorry to hear you're feeling low Marydoll but cheer up, you've started an avalanche! Start another thread for heaven's sake something like Calling all Cliquettes. I'd do it but I'm still trying to control the crowd outside - now don't shove there's no need for it - so I'm a bit occupied smile

sodapop Mon 20-Jan-20 19:49:57

Twitter & FB crashed, all looking to join this exclusive band of derailers . Simon Cowell wants to sign us up for BGT. must ease off the gin

Marydoll Mon 20-Jan-20 19:57:08

I thought I had stumbled into the now defunct Argy, by mistake! ?

Callistemon Tue 21-Jan-20 20:59:51

Paddyanne (now with an 'e'! I see) hello and welcome back

I'm sure we probably had a couple of areas where we disagreed but it would be boring if we all thought the same.

Callistemon Tue 21-Jan-20 21:06:25

That is good news Yiayia what a relief.

I'm often ignored.
Or misinterpreted! I know exactly what I meant but others interpret it entirely differently.

Which is worse, I wonder?

TwiceAsNice Thu 23-Jan-20 08:04:42

I do get acknowledged on a thread sometimes lots of times I don’t. Please keep posting the people who are feeling small, you are just as important. It does feel nicer the more you post

I have been shot down in flames on time’s in some of the contentious subjects especially when we had one on independent versus state education but I just laugh if someone is bursting a blood vessel ! Hello and welcome again to all of you who are feeling ignored ?

Resurgam123 Thu 23-Jan-20 09:07:45

I cant quite see how people can be cliquey in something that anyone can join.
You can really disagree with other posters. There have been some really tough ding dongs over the 9 yrs I have been on here.
One thing that might put people off is those who are shy.
In the past GNHQ has been quite tough on bullying .

But some people are more sensitive than others which might make some people get upset. You cannot please everyone.
In a quick look it seems to me that GN posts seem quite a lot milder than when I started.

I haven't read the whole thread so this could have been said before. I've belonged to several forums over the years and the early months follow the same pattern.
First few posts - very few replies if any. Thinking of giving up, they don't like me.
A few months later - starting to get the hang of what works on here. But still often the last post, no-one replies.
Years later, if you haven't given up, you get the idea of what the others want to talk about. It's not about you, it's about the general interest level of the topic.
News and Politics excluded.
And I avoid the relationship topics because I don't want to risk being identified.

It isn't cliques, it's the clicking of beaks coming from the flocks of harpies- As soon as someone spills their guts one shows up, then another, and before you know it, it's all about talons and screeching ..

Haven't a clue if they're indigenous or were introduced .. but it's the brutal truth that they inhabit many a thread .. !!!

BlueBelle Fri 24-Jan-20 06:49:43

I m late coming to this, can I join please sodapop mary never been in a clique before it’s on my bucket list ???
I m sure I remember reading the other day ‘Join a clique on Gransnet

sodapop Fri 24-Jan-20 08:17:16

Course you can BlueBelle you have to be able to close a thread with your post and be ignored by other posters. You will then be a Cliquette grin

Marydoll Fri 24-Jan-20 08:26:29

Should we start a lighthearted Cliquette thread, inviting all those who feel ignored or have derailed a thread, ( I have done it many a time ) to join our clique! grin

The rules are the we, of the Cliquetes are charged with responding to ALL, posts.

BlueBelle Fri 24-Jan-20 08:33:41

Oh I ve closed down threads in the past Soda Do you need proof though have I got to wade through six years of posts ???

Marydoll Fri 24-Jan-20 08:53:41

Bluebelle, no need for proof, I'm sure that has already been noticed by the Thread Police! wink

Greeneyedgirl Fri 24-Jan-20 09:24:03

If I post on a topic it's like calling the administrators into the building.
I have found that original posts usually deviate onto subjects which are the pet interest of regular posters, so if you dare answer the original post it closes down the whole show sad

Callistemon Fri 24-Jan-20 11:01:32

sodapop do the Cliquettes have to dance eg like the Television Toppers?
Will my knees take it?

What was the original post again, Greeneyedgirl? I've forgotten.

Callistemon Fri 24-Jan-20 11:05:11

SallyB392 can you dance?
If not, come in the back row with me.

sodapop Fri 24-Jan-20 11:55:15

More like the Roly Polys if you remember them Callistemon

sodapop Fri 24-Jan-20 11:56:48

Marydoll that sounds like a full time job for several people grin
