Can someone explain from the dog owning world?

I’m usually a lurker, and haven’t really ventured ‘ out ‘ much, but this just incenses me, and I wondered if there is a valid explanation. We went for a walk this afternoon in the woods/fields at the back of us. I took my litter stick as I occasionally do. Why do people put their dog poo in bags and tie them or throw them on/into trees? Am I missing something? Not ever having had a dog, only as a child, I thought someone may know. Just to clarify, they don’t appear to be compostable bags, which wouldn’t be quite as bad. Most are clearly in ordinary bags.

I am told, by serious dog people (who train guide dogs, police dogs etc) that you can train your dog to poo at the same time, in the same place, every day. So you can set aside a corner of your garden, or put newspaper down on a floor, give the dog its cue, then clear up.
Seems a good idea for all

I have owned dogs for 50 years, we never used to pick up pooh in the early days but over the past 20 years I can honestly say I have NEVER left a Pooh bag anywhere. If there are no bins then I will pick up and carry it. I have even been known to tie the bag to the dogs lead if we have a long way to go, she did, she can carry it?

Nice poem Dotty! Should be posted at the trail heads around here!

If I am knowingly returning on the same path, I will leave a bag by a tree/rock and pick it up on the way out. Otherwise, I agree with you all, that this is beyond belief that people would bother to bag it then throw it!

I own a dog and walk him 2 or 3 times a day, not now obviously, it's once a day in the lockdown. Mindless, incosiderate dog walkers who leave the dogs' excrement e with or without being bagged drives me mad and gives all dog walkers a bad name.

I am a dog owner and I find this habit incomprehensible and disgusting. It is totally selfish and not wanting to carry your own dog's poo a long way to a bin or take it home is no excuse. Anyone who chooses to own a dog knows it's going to poo. It isn't great to have to bag it and carry it a long way but that is the price we pay for choosing to have a dog and using walkways used by others.

It doesn't just spoil the walk for non dog owners it spoils the walk for dog owners like me as well. There is no pleasure in seeing the beauty of the countryside ruined by ugly plastic bags hanging all over the place. It is also very dangerous for wild life and is actually worse than leaving it unbagged in the first place. Carrying a bag of dog poo to its nearest disposal point is probably one of the worse parts of having a dog but it is not acceptable to do half the job and spoil the countryside's beauty and endanger wildlife. We have a designated dog bag bought at the pet shop but any small old shoulder bag would do. To be fair the vast majority of dog owners hate the practise of dumping poo bags in trees and on fences as much as non dog owners do.

Dog poo (and litter.) Two things that make me crazy! I dread the day when dog owners won't be able to take their dogs anywhere, due to the behaviour of what one always hopes is a minority. I'm a dog owner so always have a poo bag or 3 on me, even when my dogs are at home. I make a point of handing them to anyone who thinks it's fine just to drag their dog along the street pretending they can't see the trail the poor dog is leaving. It's disgusting, it's offensive, it's irresponsible, it's a health risk and people should be fined on the spot. Why don't we all poo in the street or on a walk? Seriously, what's the difference in terms of giving offence? I'm not keen on taking a bag of poo for a long walk, so occasionally on our beach and knowing that I will return the same way, I will leave the tied-up bag on a rock. And no, I don't forget. I collect it on my way back and put it in the litter bin or take it home. It's so simple. It's no different to having a small child : I want people to like my child, and I also want people to like my dogs. So, I make sure they and we don't give offence when out in public. If my dogs make a mess, I'm willing to stop, wait and clean it up anywhere. Think what the streets would be like if everyone just showed that they cared enough to be responsible : we could look at the view and where we're going, rather than staring at the ground whilst navigating around piles left there by dog owners who, quite frankly, should never own dogs. I won't start on those who throw litter in beautiful countryside or drop it next to a bin or, throw it out of car windows. For those, I don't need to post on a forum, I need a shotgun. angry

I have a dog that I walk 3 times a day. It's inexcusable to leave dog poo bags lying around for other people to pick up. I get free poo bags from our local pcso that I think gets them from the council. On my walks, whenever I see dog poo I pick it up and bin it. If I can carry my own dogs poo and others dogs bags too, surely it's not too much to ask that other owners bag up their own dogs mess. It particularly annoys me when I see it on pavements anywhere but near the school gates for the small children to accidentally walk in disgusts me. Our parish council are aware I do this, but not once have they ever thanked me. Still, I know it's better than leaving it there. The people that walk their dogs in the dark have a lot to answer for. Most dog owners do act responsibly, it's just the few that give the rest of us a bad name.

Our front door opens immediately onto the road, we are on a river bank. Last week some charming dog owner let their dog do a poo, a very large one, right in front of my front doorstep! Thankfully we only use the back door, or I would have probably trodden in it, not expecting it to be there. Disgusting behaviour, by the owner, not the dog.

NanaandGrampy Tue 31-Mar-20 22:46:13

We have taught every dog we’ve ever had to poo on command ! It’s very easy .

Equally , if our dog does a poo on a walk we pick it up and take it with us ! We wouldn’t DREAM of hanging it on a tree !! Double bag it is you’re worried !!

Hetty58 Tue 31-Mar-20 22:54:45

It's absolutely disgusting and totally unacceptable. I always just carry the bag with me, to a bin or back to my bin in the garden.

It's a relatively recent trend, too. Our local forest never used to be full of litter and full doggie bags. What's wrong with people?

Alexa Tue 31-Mar-20 23:00:28

Some people don't particularly like plants, trees. ditches and hedges. That sort of person views nature as a receptacle for unwanted stuff.

Chestnut Tue 31-Mar-20 23:44:03

I was told many years ago that the correct way to dispose of your dog's faeces is to train him to use a corner of your garden (if you have one) and use a chemical dog loo to dispose of it, which is safe for the environment, simple and hygienic. So why don't people do that? Much nicer than picking up poo outside and carrying it around, surely?

Eloethan Wed 01-Apr-20 00:41:17

I just carry the bag until I find a bin. It's securely tied up and it's not that heavy!

twiglet77 Wed 01-Apr-20 00:51:38

Stick and flick into undergrowth where nobody will tread on it. If that's not possible, bag and carry it to the nearest dog waste bin, or your black bin at home. I'd like to ram it down the shirts of people who bag it then hang it on a tree. There is no legislating against stupidity.

Chestnut Wed 01-Apr-20 10:00:50

twiglet77 - how do you know no-one will tread on it where you've 'flicked' it? Children love to run around in the undergrowth as they play. Your way is just as disgusting. Your dog, your poo. Don't leave it lying around anywhere.
Maybe you can answer my question above, which is why don't you use a chemical loo?

Kittye Wed 01-Apr-20 11:24:40

Chestnut those chemical dog loos don’t work. Take my word for it ? . We use the biodegradable poo bags and the bins when we are walking our dog. I have never hung a poo bag on a branch or left one on the ground. If there’s no bins I take the bags home

chocolatepudding Wed 01-Apr-20 13:26:41

We live next to a river and own the land across from our home - about 200 years of riverbank with a public footpath running along it. Also we have a 200 yard long bridleway running across a nearby field. When the dog poo is getting too bad DH sprays the stuff with brightly coloured paint used to highlight works on roads and we have sticks with labels saying " You know your dog did this, clear this mess up". Public bins are within a few yards of these paths. Most dog owners clear up but we do get odd bags left behind.

Don't start me on the mess some fishermen leave behind

Iam64 Wed 01-Apr-20 13:38:47

I have two dogs currently, had three in the past. I always pick up and now bring home, as our local bins have been taped over as non essential for our refuse collectors.

I've seen lots of people with dogs we don't know on our regular walks, probably people who usually leave their dogs home whilst they're at work. Sorry to be a moaner but, there is an increase in pooh on the pavements and out of control dogs on the fields. Grrrrrr.

Labaik Wed 01-Apr-20 13:40:43

I can't do the bag in hand way of cleaning up dog poo so always carry a seaside shovel in a poo bag inside a larger bag. Use the shovel to put it in the poo bag, then put new poo bag over the shovel to be used next time. Carry the full poo bag in larger poo bag till I find a bin. If I am next to a hedge I will shovel the poo into a place where no one can tread in it. If you flick it, it has a nasty habit of hitting something and flicking back at you confused. I've never been able to get a dog to poo or wee on command and [none dog owners look away] they always do that last 'I'll just try to squeeze a bit more out' at the end of a walk. I've never understood people not cleaning up after their dogs or leaving poo bags around.

Tea3 Wed 01-Apr-20 13:55:37

Nannarose I didn't know that about assistance dogs, but I've never understood why cats can be trained to use a litter tray but not dogs. Or, as you say, train them to use a corner of the garden. Dog poo, poo bags, people picking up dog poo, full poo bags being stuffed in a pocket, poo bags hanging off trees.....unless the dog serves some purpose, why are the 75 per cent of the public who don't own a dog being subjected to these revolting spectacles!

Grannyjay Wed 01-Apr-20 14:08:09

Hanging your dogs poo in a tree so that you don’t have to carry it. If every dog owner behaved in this gross way then we would see poo trees!

westendgirl Wed 01-Apr-20 14:17:23

#~For goodness sake pick it up and take it with you . What's the problem. ?
If you cant do that then find another owner for your dog .
Seriously it is not difficult.

3nanny6 Wed 01-Apr-20 14:30:18

Toadinthehole as a dog owner I know what you mean about those poo bags in trees although I do not see many these days.
I carry my supply of poo bags and pick up after my dog and carry the bag to the nearest bin on my route. If in deeper forestry area where not many people even go then poo can be left to degrade into the earth as it is much friendlier to the planet than plastic bags. I have my own complaint as twice in the last few days while having to move out of other peoples way on my dog walk I have not been looking on the grass/ground in front of me and have walked in two lots of dog poo. Annoying really when I clean up after my own.

Gaunt47 Wed 01-Apr-20 14:30:53

Tea3 75% of the public don't own a dog?!! That surprises me - judging by the number of dogs and people I see in this part of the country it seems to me that 75% do own a dog!
