How much is too much for a top?

I love this top. I keep looking at it. But it is totally impractical and too expensive. But it's lovely. Would you pay £165 for it? What's the most you have ever paid for a top?

Rosina Thu 10-Sept-20 09:34:57

If you like it, it suits you, and you can see yourself wearing it and feeling good in it - why not? I would probably struggle to find something to wear with it - not quite sure which shade might make an elegant outfit, but if you have that sorted then I hope you enjoy it.

I would never pay more than about £30 for a top, and rarely even that much. I don't go out much (even pre-Covid) and so I spend little on clothes. I have enough everyday tops, jeans and skirts to last for years so I'd save the money. But if you really love it, it would give you pleasure to wear it, and you can afford it without difficulty, then rock on. Why not? YOLO.

If I wasn't a lump dump and I knew it would look fab on me, I would buy it. I think it's lovely.

Janiepops Thu 10-Sept-20 09:42:05

I’d buy it with bells on!! The pleasure you’ll get is worth every penny! Will anyone else be affected? Miss out? Go hungry? No? Go for it girl!! Feel fab when you’re out xx???

Miss adventure wow those bags.... but way way out of my budget !

Caragran Thu 10-Sept-20 09:42:52

No!! No garment is worth that much. You are just paying to keep do called designers in luxury not the actual people that make them.
The people who make them get very little.

I just don't buy special occasion clothes unless I know I'd wear them more than a couple of times. Sometimes something lovely can be "demoted" to every day, but too often you end up with a wardrobe of lovely things you've only worn once. Different of course if it is for a very special occasion like a son's wedding.
And of course so many of this type of clothes need to be dry cleaned

How much is too much?
£1 more than you have?.
If you like it, then do it.

kwest Thu 10-Sept-20 09:50:39

Cost per wear is the thing.

Leah50 Thu 10-Sept-20 09:51:15

Most I've ever paid for a top is £10. Recently bought 4 smart tops in TKMaxx for £5 each.

Juicylucy Thu 10-Sept-20 09:58:02

As other say if you can afford it and will get plenty of wear out of it to justify that price then treat yourself. But I certainly wouldn’t pay that for one top I could get few lovely pieces for that price. Even if it’s on sale I don’t feel it’s worth that investment.

It’s pretty. And silk is expensive. I don’t know about you, but I rarely see things I like. I have an enormous wardrobe (a symptom of rarely chucking things out and a lot of charity shop shopping), so contemplating selling stuff on eBay. Perhaps, if you have stuff you feel you don’t need anymore and sell it, that could justify a spend? The other options are wait for a sale, or take up dressmaking. I had a friend who spent tens of thousands on clothing. She said always buy ‘outfits’. So don’t randomly buy something because it catches your eye. Always make sure you have shoes and accessories to go with it. Her theory was, you will need a quarter of the wardrobe most of us accumulate.

I’d be more tempted to make do with what I’ve got for a little longer and give a huge donation of food to the food bank.

Bluedaisy Thu 10-Sept-20 10:17:16

Trisher if YOU are in love with it (I only ever buy clothes now I am in love with), you can afford it, I say go with it. It’s lovely by the way. You can also wear it undone with a camisole underneath to get more wear out of it. I have previously bought 2 tops very similar to this in the past, one for a wedding and questioned myself on the expense but always justify it by thinking that they will not date, they will last me years which they have as I bought them 12 years ago and although my friend now possesses one the other one is hanging in my wardrobe as good as the day I bought it. I have recently bought a little sleeveless cami to go under it and have worn it as a jacket and it still looks lovely. I ignore the ‘dry clean only’ and put on machine handwash and lightly iron and it comes up lovely. I would rather splash out every few years on something decent and know it will probably outlive me than buy cheap and cheerful that looks like a rag next summer. You are only on this planet for such a short time....enjoy. By the way I don’t drink or smoke and rarely go out so if I have to justify it to myself that’s how I do it ?

rowanflower0 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:17:29

If I can't machine wash at 30 and hang on hanger to dry - I would not buy it.
Have bought some expensive Jaques Vert tops, but prefer to get them from retail outlets or from ebay - where someone has worn it once for a wedding, then sold it!

HHBBNN54 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:18:34

I couldnt justify paying that much for a top myself only looking for crop trousers in the sale but have not found any at the right price yet in larger sizes

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:19:14

We have men in today, they are currently using a Kango to excavate a corner of our sitting room. Thought I best dress for the occasion silk shirt, contrasting jeans and make-up..........can you tell I am fed-up with Covid regulations (still adhering to them though)

Anything that makes us feel good in these trying times is worthwhile.

trisher go for it ???‍♀️

seadragon Thu 10-Sept-20 10:22:06

I have bought tops like that in the sales and have learned not to. They seem to attract indelible stains instantly. However I have always regretted not buying a Gudrun Sjoden teal jumbo corduroy - remember that? - jacket and trousers combo because of the expense. So if any you have one in a size 14, even in a different colour for sale, please let me know. I'm serious!

pinkjj27 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:23:18

It’s not my thing at all, but I only ever buy from charity shops and eBay because I won’t buy fast fashion because of the environment.
I never pay that on any clothing when there are people starving. If I loved a top that much I would search on eBay or 2nd hand sites to find it or something like it. But I guess that's just me.

trisher Thu 10-Sept-20 10:28:56

Oh seadragon thanks for the 'indelible stains' reminder. I have a white linen top (cost next to nothing) I am currently struggling with and I can at least soak and bleach it!!!! I'm stll not sure what the stain is. I'm sure it wasn't that bad when it went into the machine!!

Rosiewhite1 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:31:22

Like others, I would not even be looking at a top priced in that category. I buy the majority of my clothing from charity shops. Items are always washed or dry cleaned by me and I do check for wear and tear.....even the sorting ladies can miss the odd defect! Check buttons, zips etc. I also buy items for my home. Admittedly, you have to be prepared to do an amount of wandering round, but most towns have a plethora of charity shops....and coffee shops for that sit down and a cuppa. I enjoy the 'hunt'.

At the moment you CANNOT try on an item of clothing, but if you have only paid £2 or £3 or even something off the many £1 rails that appear, then you can just re-donate. Shops are allowing you to ask for a refund (I believe... but not sure) within a certain time. The pandemic has channged so many things so its worth asking at each shop what the rules are.
I'm horrified at the prices charged in retail stores for clothing. If you have to have something special for a one off event, it makes sensje to pay as little as possible for it?

A lot of charity shops keep clothing on a separate rail for special occasions. Cocktail dresses, sequinned tops, wedding dresses etc. Just ask if you can't see what you are looking for. Staff are generally friendly and helpful and will go into the back area to check for you.

Purplepixie Thu 10-Sept-20 10:32:03

I love it and yes I would buy it. We only live once!

Callistemon Thu 10-Sept-20 10:34:21

We have men in today, they are currently using a Kango to excavate a corner of our sitting room.
Goodness me, Grannygravy, have you discovered oil or gold under the sitting room floor?

You'll be able to afford all the silk shirts you need.

I threw out a load of silk shirts a few years ago, what a pity as they were classic.

Libman Thu 10-Sept-20 10:38:27

I don’t think the OP was asking whether we liked the top so it’s a shame that some on here are expressing their negative opinions. Trisher - buy it if it will give you pleasure and you can afford it. Sometimes wearing something that makes us feel good is a real boost to the spirit. Doesn’t matter if it cost £14 or
£140. Often you can’t tell anyway!

Ramblingrose22 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:49:11

Trisher - if you love it and will get good use out of it I would buy it. Life is so difficult at the moment for all sorts of reasons and anything that lifts the spirits must be a good thing.

Like others on here, I rarely find anything I like so if I see something I like very much I am always tempted to buy it.
