How much is too much for a top?

I love this top. I keep looking at it. But it is totally impractical and too expensive. But it's lovely. Would you pay £165 for it? What's the most you have ever paid for a top?

NanKate Wed 09-Sept-20 21:15:20

Trisher I think the top is fabulous.

I spent £75.00 x2 on some tops I thought would be wonderful, but to be honest they are no better than my cheaper tops.

I wonder Mary if we both bought the same jacket in the sale from Seasalt, mine is a navy short box jacket at about £45.00.

Now I did buy a bargain last week from the Edinburgh Wool Mills. It is a navy zipper jacket with spots on and striped cuffs. It cost £26.00 and was my Best Buy this year. I don’t know how to put the picture in here but no doubt someone else could do it.

Does it matter if People notice the top has been worn a few times. Kate Middleton is praised for “recycling”, that if wearing an outfit more than once.
I know KM won’t be a role model for trisher but if I like a top I wear it endlessly

If you want to look at it it is the brand Isle - Leisure Navy Zip Sweat top at EWM.

Marydoll Wed 09-Sept-20 21:28:03

Kate, the jacket.

Trisher, sorry to hijack your thread!

It's a beautiful top. I wouldn't care if people saw me wearing it again. I'd wear it lots.

Life is too short, so if you like it and can afford it, buy it.

trisher Wed 09-Sept-20 21:53:06

It's Jigsaw Suziewoozie For some reason it keeps popping up in the ads on GN. Don't know why it's all a bit pricier than I'm used to. I know that my DSs think I have no idea about prices now and I just wondered if others were spending more..
I'm not upset by those who don't like it. I know I'm a bit of an individual as far as style goes.

Marydoll Wed 09-Sept-20 22:02:52

Trisher, good news. If you sign up for Jigsaw's emails, you get 15% off your first order and the best part, you can machine wash it on a delicate setting.

No don’t much like it and have probably never paid more than £20 for a top why would anyone ? Charity shop buys are usually under a fiver and I m probably as happy as those spending hundreds

trisher Wed 09-Sept-20 22:19:09

Thanks Marydoll I'm doing the maths on that now!

52bright Wed 09-Sept-20 22:50:28

I like the top even though it is not my style. It is way above my
budget unless it was for a wedding or other very special event.

52bright Wed 09-Sept-20 22:56:52

opps ...posted too soon. You asked how much is too much for a top. I would hesitate to buy a top over £60 unless for a special occasion. I am more inclined towards dresses, tights and boots. I wouldn't pay more than about £85 for every day going out casual type dresses. I have paid considerably more for special occasions, always thinking I have bought something I would definitely wear again, but sadly this never happens and the most expensive items languish unworn in the back of the wardrobe.

CocoPops Wed 09-Sept-20 23:19:06

What are you waiting for? !!
You love it. You can afford it.

Bixiboo Wed 09-Sept-20 23:26:19

If you can afford it Trisher then go for it. Life is too short to worry about the price of a top. Jigsaw clothes are lovely and if you can get a discount then even better.

crazyH Wed 09-Sept-20 23:40:08

When I'm talking of clothes, I always remember the trouser suit I bought from Primark......it was greyish blue. I wore that for my divorce hearing. I did look good. The Judge was pretty fair when dealing out the settlement. He probably thought I needed enough money to keep me in Primark ?

Trisher - it's machine washable silk... so if you have a silk wash on your machine... ?

I think it's lovely. And probably versatile.
Could also be worn instead of a cardigan/jacket/shawl on those not-so-warm summer evenings.

morethan2 Thu 10-Sept-20 05:46:10

Oh I wish I could wear stripes Maw but I’d look like a barrel.
trisher if you love the top and wearing it will make you feel a million dollars then buy it and wear it with a big bright smile. We all need something to make us happy these days. It’s a sunshine top.

DanniRae Thu 10-Sept-20 07:39:04

Crikey trisher imagine if you read all our posts - decide that you will buy it - and then your size is sold out! What a let down that would be shock

Quick - go buy it now - and despite all the negative posts (me too - sorry blush) - I am sure we will all be happy for you smile

Good Luck x

Mary I was tempted by the blue Seasalt jacket you have bought, but by that time I had already bought the other blue jacket which is slightly padded and rather snug.

Spangler Thu 10-Sept-20 08:02:11

trisher, the top is lovely. If you can afford it, go for it. Sometimes you see something and that wicked fairy whispers, buy it. But something tells me that you feel it's extravagant otherwise you would have bought it. That's why you are seeking approval. Treat yourself.

Lucca Thu 10-Sept-20 08:20:31

It would look lovely for a night out or a wedding or a party (what are they ?!). I bought Jigsaw silky cardigan .....possibly 18 years ago. I still have it

Lucca Thu 10-Sept-20 08:21:43

Think of what you have NOT spent in the last few months.....it adds up, cinema trips, meals out, holidays etc.

Missfoodlove Thu 10-Sept-20 09:01:42

Yes if I loved it and would utilise it.
I still wear a 25 year old classic white shirt that cost £99
Every year I buy a new cashmere top and relegate an old one.
I also buy one pair of NYDJ each year.
I have a fairly fixed style particularly in Autumn and Winter so good boots, jeans, shirt or jumper with a Tusting bag always works.

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-20 09:06:57

This thread has me pondering, dare I go into my favourite store today and buy some new jeans or a new sweat shirt. I know, not very exciting but as I'm unlikely to be doing much outside the house than walking the dog, they will be wardrobe staples this autumn and winter. I have only one pair of decent jeans, the rest are all years and years old (and yes, a bit tight round the middle)

Carenza123 Thu 10-Sept-20 09:13:37

If you can afford it - go for it. The trouble is in these times, I never get the opportunity to ‘dress up’. It’s definitely smart casual if I DO go out. I have a lovely dark blue lacy sparkly evening dress which I would love to wear but it will never see the light of day. Another one for the charity shop.
