If people spend quite a bit of money on a subscription or regular purchase to a paper that supports racist and anti-foreign views, for instance- I think it is fair to assume they support those views, totally or at least to some extent.

That’s more or less what I wrote earlier on a thread Kitty.
I have no objection to wrong facts being pointed out, but opinions? That’s an entirely different matter.
If a poster’s opinions don’t fit in with some others then there are frequent digs and insults even.It’s really not on, is it?

If some people use derogative and very unpleasant terms toward a teenager is is trying very hard to influence the future of our planet, and that of our grandchildren and beyond- I think it is fair to say it is not fair or correct.

Some things cannot be 'tolerated'. I can accept and tolerate proper and trained hunting- but not any form of hunting that causes extreme stress, cruelty and pain. Can't tolerate fascisim or extreme nationalistics views, etc. Tolerating becomes very close to condoning... We each have our own limits.

A few.

It's easy to tolerate others' opinions if they are presented with reasoned explanation or justification. We can't all agree on everything but generally we do have to get on.

It is harder to tolerate people who tread carelessly over things you hold dear without reason or those who comment with brute faced antagonism, repeated ignorance, rudeness, cruelty, spitefulness, arrogance or those who are just being provocative for the sake of it and admit they will have forgotten what they've said a moment later.

Stop Funding Hate - I am a firm supporter of this campaign, and some will be quite happy, and in their right, to judge me on this.

I don't have much time or respect for people who try to demonise you and encourage others to see you as "bad" as a method for silencing you and dismissing your comments.

They do this by twisting your words, your meaning or by telling you what you think/feel or by simply mocking you.

Apart from that I will generally talk to anyone quite happily in respectful discussion. I can usually find some common ground with a lot of people.

can ‘justify’ them to you.
That isn’t what tolerance is at all.
This is mainly an opinions forum, and unless the opinions posted are either racist or something else including personal attacks on another poster which need reporting to GNHQ then that’s what it is, the opinion of another person.

Surely this forum isn't purely for the listing of opinions on after the other. It is for discussion and explanation and understanding. If I seek to understand the reasoning behind someone else's opinion, that doesn't mean I don't tolerate it, I just need some background about the opinion and, who knows, they might just help me form or reform my own opinion.

If I dismiss an opinion without seeking to understand it then I think that is lack of tolerence.

We all have our own opinions on subjects, we need to be more tolerant and respect others views even if we dont like them. I do think that sometimes its difficult to put into words what you want to say and it can come across as being judgemental even though you didnt mean it to be.

Time and again, posters have been asked to explain themselves, justify their opinion and generally asked for reams of ‘homework’ by others on GN.
If a poster wants to do this, then fine, but otherwise they are quite entitled to simply state their opinions on the matter raised by the OP.
Only intolerant and judgemental people hound others.
Posters often just pop in for ten mins on forums and aren’t there to have an hour long Oxford debate on the matter.

it is not about 'the paper' it is about the views those paper hold and push- like racism and anti-foreign sentiments and sheer intolerance.

Back to the title- I think it is very different to be judgemental of 'people', to be 'judgemental' about some views and opinions they hold.

How far are we supposed to tolerate acceptance or even support of racism, injustice, fascism, child or animal cruelty, to mention just a few.

I don’t think there’s ever a need to resort to personal remarks about their beliefs which are designed to wound people. I’m with lemongrove as far as facts are concerned, I prefer to be corrected if I have my facts wrong, and I will point out to others if they do. Disagreement is healthy but I often cringe when I see how personal some comments are, and the Greta Thunberg thread today has quite upset me.

Ot depends what you mean though. If your opinion was women are more likely to pick their noses than men, I would say how do you know that. It's perfectly reasonable to ask a question.

Sorry Urmstongran, that does NOT wash.

If you make a statement that you would be happy to, say, see Frost trigger Art 16- you need to be able to state your reasons why, and show that you are aware of consequences. If you refuse- then why should your opinion on this matter not be questionned?
