A long way from the start - how far away from your birth town do you live ?

I was reading on Facebook that approximately 70% of people live within 30 miles of where they were born when they become adults. I am not sure about this. I worked out that I live approximately 10,525 miles away. I don’t know that many here who stayed near their original hometowns.
What about you ?

I was born in Cardiff and live in North Devon, not far by water given we can see Swansea from our house but over 3 hours to drive. Used to live in Essex and Suffolk before moving here for work thinking I had not been to Devon before. But the first time I moved here and my father came to stay he said I was first here when I was 2 and came across on a day trip by boat when my mother was still alive. I think the boat stopped in the 1950s!

Google maps tells me it's 200 miles by road from here to Bootle (now part of Liverpool). As the crow flies, it'll be closer but there's the Pennine Chain to get over! ? I'm answering the specific question since my mother went 'home', from London, to give birth to me so I only spent a couple of weeks there. All my antecedents hail from the North West, though. I've lived in the North East for forty years.

About 288 miles plus the Irish Sea. From beautiful N.E. Yorkshire to the spectacular scenery of County Down in Northern Ireland.

As the crow flies, I'd say about 100 metres give or take a few. we did move 2 miles away but I got homesick!! grin

I was adopted, so slightly different for me. My adoptive parents moved away as soon as they adopted me - thinking about it now, I suppose it was so there wouldn't be any awkward questions - and I live around seven miles from where they moved to. I'm 73 and for the vast majority of that time I lived within a couple of miles.

Purplepoppies Wed 26-May-21 12:16:29

Currently 600 miles away from my home town.
I've had many regrets in these last few years about the choice to move here, none more so than not being there for my mum when she died last year ? bloody covid meant I couldn't easily travel to be with her.
I've lived in England, Scotland and Wales, yet to live in Ireland but have visited many times.
Right now I have no clue where I'm going to end up. Inheritance will dictate which areas I can afford.

Craftycat Wed 26-May-21 12:21:38

At a guess about 10-15 miles maybe 20.
Both my parents lived there when they were children & only moved when they sold the house to my first husband & 1. We moved when the children were in primary school as we wanted a quieter, more rural location for them. After my divorce I moved in with my new partner (now husband) only about 3 miles from where I had lived with husband no. 1.
I love it here & am not contemplating moving again.

About 3500 miles!

My Mum died aged 92 and she had lived in just the one house all her life. Caring for her Mum and Dad, then married, two children, widowed very young. She lived her last 40 years alone but fiercely independent. When we put the house on the market, the estate agent started his description "1922 semi detached. One careful owner"!

I live 11 miles away and getting on for 51 years in the same house. I won't move now. Like mother, like daughter.

Furthest I live away from where I was born was around 600 miles. Born in London, moved to Ayrshire.

I now live Staffordshire, so probably around 200 miles or so.

NoddingGanGan Wed 26-May-21 12:29:02

50 miles. Settled in the area we used to holiday in when I was a child. Was born just outside a large city but always been a country girl at heart.
