Another here who doesn’t think it’s ‘cliquey’. It’s a mixed bag. Some (very) wealthy people, some middle of the roaders, some (me, last year) with an overdraft, no ISAs, no premium bonds and an 18 year old car. But - here’s the rub - everyone is lovely! No competition at all. Some do have better health, more energy and (unlike me) are really excellent at crafting, baking etc but I can say, hand on heart - I believe everyone is made welcome, posts are long, short and in between - but we all get listened to, appreciated with kindness and over the years, virtual friendships are made as we all care about one another.

Nicely put Urmtongran I agree with you.

Sorry Urmstongran got your name wrong must preview first.

Not to worry monk08 👋

GM doesn’t need defending and neither does this. They’re different is all.

Urmstongran Tue 11-Jun-24 17:22:34

True Baggs. I chimed in to defend against the ‘cliquey’ remark. I couldn’t let it go unchallenged as I felt it was a slur.

Baggs Tue 11-Jun-24 17:44:32

I understood what the reference to cliquiness meant without agreeing that GM is cliquey. It’s what I tried to explain up-thread (not really expecting anyone to ‘get’ what I was saying). Hey ho and all that 😁

Been to a BBQ. Just what I needed.

I don’t think so. New posters receive a warm welcome.

I agree.
I have been here just over a year.
I have only noticed once, something that appeared "cliquey".
Though I am not the most observant person ever. grin

The GM thread is pretty cliquey

I don't post on the GM thread but I read it every day. It is NOT cliquey.
It's a friendly thread, anyone is welcome.

Never noticed.
I sometimes post there, sometimes not.

I refuse to take anything on GN too serious.

CanadianGran Tue 11-Jun-24 19:13:32

I miss the good morning thread because of time difference! It's always late morning for me when I log on, which is dinner time for all of you, and your day is almost done.

I booked an airbnb in Valencia for our Spain trip in September, and chatted with my friend that we need to firm up some plans before we take off on our respective holidays in june and July. I'm gone for two weeks, then she is gone for another two, so it leaves little time for planning. But I find planning part of the fun.

The GM thread is pretty cliquey

No it isn`t. I posted and was welcomed with open arms

If is is cliquey, how did those of us who post ever manage to pluck up courage in the first place?
However, it took a while to get to know people, you have to persist.

New posters are always welcomed and I have found it a very supportive thread, when life is hard.
I have actually met some of the posters in real life and they are all lovely.

This thread will give those who don't wish to post on the GM thread for whatever reason, a chance to share their news.

winterwhite Tue 11-Jun-24 21:14:48

I have thought the GM cliquey but maybe that’s the wrong word.
Certainly new posters are warmly welcomed, but there is also a good deal of ‘chat’ between individuals who give the impression of having known one another for a long time and prob have. That’s inevitable with such a long-running forum but it can be off-putting and that should be recognised even if it can’t be helped.
I welcome the new thread. Surely room for both.

Ellen78 Tue 11-Jun-24 21:22:48

Room for both. Exactly. This thread seems chattier, more of a quick dip in and out….

Urmstongran Tue 11-Jun-24 21:25:04

Definitely room for both. Mind you at this time of day maybe ‘good morning’ is a misnomer!
😁

merlotgran Tue 11-Jun-24 21:45:09

When I joined Gransnet twelve years ago I think there was a thread called, ‘Today I have……’

You could jump in at any point during the day and mention what you’ve been up to.

There was no need to mention any days or dates and like Soop’s Kitchen it ran until 40 pages were completed. I liked it because you could pop in later in the day/evening and add to something mentioned earlier.

I think it stopped when the Good Morning thread started but I could be wrong.

Apologies if I’ve imagined this 😂😂

Ziplok Tue 11-Jun-24 21:47:01

I wonder if “long standing” is being mistaken for being “cliquey”?
It’s inevitable that a long running thread such as the GM thread is going to consist of lot of familiar names (I’ve been posting on it myself for many years, although initially using a different moniker, and don’t post as often these days but read it frequently), and so as a result there will be a degree of familiarity. However, I don’t think this means that any newer posters will deliberately be made to feel unwelcome - it’s just that as regular posters become familiar with each other and share details, they become more “ known” than posters who have recently joined.

Pantglas2 Tue 11-Jun-24 22:18:47

I think there’s room for both threads too. I’ve been on the GM thread for almost 6 years with a few sabbaticals from posting but always try to keep up with what’s occurring!

I don’t post every day as sometimes I get waylaid by life…😡 but I ‘know’ lots of posters, their family goings on and where they live and lots know me and my pictorial style of posting 😂

As for being cliquey, I think it’s impossible to keep up with every newbie after the initial welcome greeting but I do try to acknowledge if someone has commented on my post.

I certainly don’t take offence if no one comments at all - we’re all busy or have other ‘stuff’ going on, so maybe don’t take it personally when that happens?

Just enjoy reading other folks bizzinesses and get on with your own lovely day🌞

I have been on GN since close to inception - and post regulalry.

GN is like an everflowing stream people join and people leave all the time. Most of the names present at the start have disappeared. many of us for various reasons have changed our names at some time and we have periods away from GN. I came off GN for about 6 months during COVID because so many threads, perhaps reflecting, the pressure of the time became nasty and unpleasant with members turinging on each other.

For me GN is the only social media I am on and contributory to.

My Good Morning what are you all doing today? Nothing much! Cant settle to anything specific yet.
But it is early in the day.

I guess this is a thread that will be started (daily) later in the day?

Pantglas2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:54:39

Good morning all 👋

We’re doing the Swedish Death Clean of the garage while we have a skip on the drive (roofers are in). So much stuff lurking in there that hasn’t seen use nor light of day in 25 years!

Mollygo Wed 12-Jun-24 07:55:54

Got up early to go to the gym, but hung the washing out instead.
It’s fine, and dare I say, sunny so we are going to walk with the dog along the estuary and have breakfast at a little cafe that welcomes people with or without dogs.
It’s a bit like GM. When we first went there, everyone else seemed to have been going for ages.
How do you feel joining the only table with a space where everyone knows each other, they say hi and welcome you to sit down, but then quite naturally carry on with talking about their own things. Do you chip in, or sit there in silence till there’s a gap in the conversation?

dragonfly46 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:59:28

Molly if you want to be included you persevere by posting each day and allowing the other posters to get to know you. I used to post regularly on GM and it was a whole different bunch of people. It is changing all the time and certainly not cliquey.

nanna8 Wed 12-Jun-24 08:28:21

Book group was this afternoon and this evening ( in a minute) daughter and fam coming round because it is her birthday. I’ve made a cake and doing a seafood paella. Nice day for us.

Having my nails done at a salon, going to the cinema this afternoon, then having a dinner at a pub
