Why do people watch films at the cinema? Why do people watch soaps on TV? Why do people watch operas, musicals or plays at the theatre? You could say the same about many things. As I said before, it'd be a boring old world if we all liked the same things. I may not like watching some things, but I'm perfectly happy to let others get on with it...

It would indeed be boring but I don't understand why some sports are deemed so very important that they can dominate the news, TV and other media for weeks.

The one doesn’t cancel out the other. My DH and all but two* of my children and grandchildren are very sporty. They all play or have played football regularly (some have coached it) and they enjoy watching professionals play too, especially at this level.

*The other two take after me and will be watching with one eye on their phone or a jigsaw, looking up when the volume levels increase and we know something exciting’s about to happen….

Not interested in any kind of sport; fed up with the way it's regarded as so important that it leads news bulletins. Sick up to here of hearing that "we're all cheering on England" (No, we're not) and that "it will be so good for the national morale if we win". Why, for goodness sake? It's 22 overpaid people chasing a ball. Meh.
And as for the use of "we" in this context... We won't win anything. The only winners will be one of the competing teams; nothing to do with the rest of us.

I’ve never watched a single football game in my 70 years, I’m with you Spuddy, 100%.

Me! Nor is dh really, but I expect he’ll watch, so I’ll have to hide elsewhere because I can't bear the tension. Will be very pleased if we win, but I never expect let alone anticipate it.

If sport leaves you cold, I think it's impossible to understand the enthusiasm (obsessive sometimes) for it.

It bores me to great yawning sobs, but I have to accept that for others it's a joy, or even a raison d'être.

I could probably tolerate a chilly winter afternoon at the local playing fields watching a mixed-sex game of football played by 9-year-olds - because that's how I remember 'sport' from my school days. In those days the losers were given a "hip, hip, hurrah" along with the winners, and the spectators supporting the losing side didn't slip into a sea of depression because their side lost.

But then sport became an industry and was completely reconstructed, and sportsmen and women are now commodities, who sometimes need to take time off just to count their money.

Whilst I agree with you Missinterpreted that it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same things, and I too, am happy for people to be able to watch sport if they so wish, but it’s the overkill that annoys me - they don’t know when to stop. We have experts droning on before and after the matches, for hours, it dominates the news programmes and other scheduling gets shunted out to enable this to happen. We all pay our licence fee, but it seems to me that sports coverage now verges on the obsessional by the tv stations, and too bad if you don’t like excessive sports coverage. Where is balance?

I do sympathise with those not interested in sport, like my husband and two of my children. I, however, absolutely love it and don't watch anything else, so this summer is brilliant for me. Football, tennis, American football, and athletics are my favourites, so I'm in my element.
It is all-encompassing at the moment\, however, and if Sky or a streaming service is out of reach, I can imagine how badly treated licence payers must feel.

But how do you know if you don’t give it a go, RosesandLilac? There are many things that others love that bore me rigid - tennis, chick lit, Montelbano - but I only know because I’ve tried them.

I agree Callistemon213 it's not just football either, F1 commentators go on alarmingly.
I don't watch sport but I do watch soaps etc so feel I can't moan too much about it. Why does Wimbledon have to be on BBC 1 &2 at the same time though.

Me and my DH, won't be watching it or or the tennis either. DH likes the rugby and follows that but usually only watched the international games.

We watch golf, tennis, footie, and Olympics skiing/skating. I'll perhaps be reading whilst sporty things are on, but I'll 'watch' with my husband. We're sporty - one can always learn by watching!

News and sports are main reasons we bother with TV.

I miss the show jumping that I enjoyed on bbc - horse of the year show wash a high spot.
I don’t mind the endless chatter from the pundits. I rather enjoyed Gary Neville having to eat humble pie after Southgate made changes and the boys dun good. Southgate’s management style interesting and politicians could learn from it.

I actively dislike it. I think it is an aggressive game - the act of kicking is an aggressive act - and it encourages aggression in its fans.
