We always spent our holidays on the Lizard peninsular in Cornwall with my aunt, uncle, cousins and grandad. They travelled from the midlands and Bath. We travelled from Plymouth.
Dad built a trailer to take everything we needed. Our little Austin A40 was packed to the gunnels as well. The back seats went flat and all the bedding and soft things were laid on top. Almost last were three nylon sleeping bags, opened up, nylon to nylon. Then there was me, laid flat on top (with very little headroom) with a comic and a bag of sweets. Lord knows what would have happened if we had needed to break hard. I would have shot straight through the windscreen!
Our pink frame tent was always the talking point of the campsite! Dads brother and his wife had gone to the caravan and camping exhibition in Earls Court with the intention of buying themselves a new tent. Letters were exchanged beforehand and a postal order enclosed. They had been tasked with finding us a new tent as well, but our budget wasn't as big so we ended up with an ex-demo/show model, hence the garish shade of pink!
Grandad stayed at a nearby farmhouse B&B. Every year there were always a new litter of kittens to go and make a fuss of.
There were the same things to look forward to every year.
'Going on safari' meant taking the longer more bumpy route on an unmade road out of the campsite to the main road. Lord knows what it did to the car suspension!
Visiting a private beach that was for the sole use of the hotel patrons. Having a pint and a pasty in the hotel bar beforehand meant we counted as 'patrons' and could use the beach.
If it rained that meant a visit to the local town. For a long time I thought it always rained when we went there, now I know it's because it rained that we went there!
Going to peer over the cliffs at Porthcurno to see the wreck of the Torrey Canyon on the rocks below.
Scraping an oil blob off our feet after a day at the beach. My feet were very ticklish so this was torture....
Visiting Church Cove and reading the gravestones of young men who had lost their lives at sea.
Going to the Culdrose Airshow which always coincided with our holiday.
Going to the Telstar Cafe at Goonhilly for an egg and chips
tea.
Visiting Marazion Bay (I learnt to swim there one year).
Saving my pocket money so I could buy a new Wade Whimsie from the campsite shop. Several shop visits were required before I could make up my mind which one to buy. My cousin Mike used to get fed up with my indecision, but he always said yes when I asked him to come with me.
It felt like we did this every year of my childhood, but in reality it was only for about five consecutive years.
