The Times reported this boy has worked in theatre - London even, so I have a feeling this attack on a dance workshop, the definite target, was somehow related. Some grievance - real or imagined?

Well I live here and had heard a name bandied about, but it was fake.

Now his actual name and photos of him have been released.

I'm glad he was named before his 18th birthday. This crime was so hideous that exceptional circumstances were called for.

I don't think the comment about working in a theatre and a grievance is helpful. That's just speculating all over again. The bottom line is that he is an evil monster.

It stops speculation.

It stops innocent people being named.

Those who have lost their daughters and those who are sitting by hospital beds, it makes a difference.

I hope now the police are guarding the street he lives in. Although I expect the family have been moved. Otherwise the ignorant thug element will probably torch houses. And no doubt the wrong house as they are not the brightest of people.

By continuing to prevent full reporting at this stage has the disadvantage of allowing others who are up to mischief to continue to spread misinformation in a vacuum. Allowing full reporting will undoubtedly remove some of the misreporting as to the identity of the defendant.

The truth is always better than speculation but protocol has to be followed. I understand this young man is 18 in a few days and the judge is not considering a section 25 because of this.

Yes.

Yes - the deleted first Southport thread ran with the rumours as fact:

for at least 2/3 pages before the police said "he's a UK citizen originally from Cardiff".

But as soon as some posters ran the quotes through google it was obvious it was a dodgy SM source.

The SM source had fake "news" from the UK and the USA featured on it.

The thread was deleted as there was far too much heated speculation on it.

I think given the riots and injured police, naming him could place anyone close to him in danger so it really isn't a good idea

Unfortunately there are people who will continue to believe the untrue rumours despite evidence otherwise

The Judge felt that not naming him would have little effect in protecting the welfare of his family.
Moreover, the Judge said the balance clearly comes down in favour of the public interest in allowing full reporting of these proceedings.
I think he was right to say this.
