This is possibly the worst, and nastiest, thread title I have yet seen in Gransnet. I’m off to find that Guardian article on Happiness.
Well, I started to read the link but when the MP started talking about your nan and your grandad having the vaccine, I switched off what he had to say.
How patronising, as if he is only addressing the younger age groups and your nan and your grandad are too old and senile to be addressed directly.
"Do they take sugar"?
Here's another link to what the doctor actually said. The comment about patients "waiting for the English one" was only a small part of it.

I only meant to post the link without her comment on the matter, but, as I agree with her, that is OK.
As said, only meant to post the link to the DM friend sent me, without her comment- which did turn out to be a red rag to some people.
And yes, some of you seem to be blissfully aware that there are many sites currently to encourage people to Buy British only. One here, on GN, which has been fair and informative. Sadly, most of those sites have turned out to be very unpleasant and full of people who 'don't want to buy any of this foreign muck' - with very unpleasant, nationalistic/jingoisitc sentiments, and anyone questionning such being insulted and worse. I am not on any of them, thank goodness- but I have seen posts which have been reported- and they are scary, and some pretty ignorant too. And yes, like it or not, it is all linked to the events of the last few years in the UK- there is no denying that. Well, you can deny it- if you wish, but the links are there and very clear.

I'm rather more concerned about the number of young women I've heard saying they won't take the vaccine. They have been convinced that the vaccine may cause infertility in women. This is based on misinformation from two scientists involved in early tests of the vaccine, who found it caused a spike in a hormone linked to the placenta. It's now been confirmed that yes there is a brief spike but no long term risk. (apologies for my non scientific description )
I'm not too bothered about them. It will be many months before it's their turn and public opinion and evidence on efficacy might very well have changed by then. As it hasn't been established whether any vaccine stops transmission, the only people who will be affected are those who refuse to be vaccinated.

I do not remember seeing it. But reason tells me that since so many people receiving the vaccine on a daily basis at present are in the over 80 age group, the number of such refuseniks must be very small indeed and there are plenty of younger people saying they will refuse the vaccine for far less vaild reasons (that does not mean this reason is valid, just more rational)
It's claimed that these people refused the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine because it's foreign and want the AstraZeneca/Oxford one because it's British. That's the issue here. It's not about refusing vaccines per se. It's nonsense, of course, because AstraZeneca is a British/Swedish company and the scientists who have collaborated on all the vaccines come from all sorts of different national backgrounds.

MOnica I posted a link to it on page 1 of this thread.
Here it is again.

I quite like CNN, we have watched quite a bit of it lately. I find the whole attack on the media, and it comes from all sides, very trumpian.

Thanks Monica I find the sneering at particular papers or media worrying, it comes from all angles, the sneering about lefty BBC, etc. All forms of media have their bias and faults, and its good to be aware of it, but dismissing things because they appear in a particular source is worrying.
It's been interesting to watch some CNN along with Ch4, Sky and BBC coverage of events in Washington.

It's always frustrating for medics when patients refuse certain treatments based on false information.
What do you think of the particular article under discussion in this thread MOnica?
Well, I am more than happy to admit I read the Daily Mail most days. It is actually, journalistically, an excellent paper with very good financial and medical sections each week.
It also runs many effective campaigns for the public good. It campaigned vigorously for justice for Stephen Lawrence, Campaigned against plastic pollution and many other subjects that most GN members who despise it would support
A couple of years ago the editor changed and since then it has moved to a politically more centrist position and is frequently highly critical of the current leadership and administration. David Blunket is a regular contributor and other, more centrist Labour politicians have articles published.
No, I am neither a Conservative voter nor are my politics to the right of centre, but the Daily Mail represents the mindset and views of many millions of voters and I do not despise people because I do not agree with them politically and by reading the Daily Mail and being able to see its good points while disagreeing with its politics most of the time, I at least have an understanding of the rational of those who are politically to the right of me.
We can’t set ourselves up as judge and jury as to why people
Either refuse a certain vaccine or all vaccines.
The shots will be offered to others and are not wasted.

So - what happens if people refuse the Moderna vaccine on the grounds that it us American?
Will the same vitriol be targeted as at the Pfizer Ten?
I think you know the answer to that Callistemon ??
BlueBelle I thought that about the flu vaccine too. Most of us never ask who makes it. In October I was offered it by my pharmacist. I usually have it from the GP but I was picking up a prescription and it was convenient. She reassured me, when I asked, that it was the same one wherever I had it. No problems and it saved me from another risky trip to the GP and into the world of Covid.
Another one being ignored here! But I am used to never getting a reply to questions to this poster.

For what it's worth Pantglas and Lemongrove, I also asked what Wonder how they voted had to do with older people not wanting a particular vaccine but I haven't seen an explanation of its relevance yet. So I'm left with the supposition that it was probably just another opportunistic attempt to shoehorn bloody Brexit into another COVID thread, when actually it had no relevance whatsoever. awaits the cavalary
