Virtual cruise from Venice along the river Po with the option to learn some Italian

The suggested format is that this is a discussion thread about the places along the route, links allowed, together with the option of synchronised learning of some of the Italian language using the free Duolingo language course. Sort of like a treasure hunt for information, yet no teams, people sharing what they find.

LINK > www.duolingo.com/courses

Participants using Duolingo will need to register, free, with Duolingo.

Registering with Duolingo does, by default, make one's profile public. On a computer, one can make it private by clicking on the blue disc at top right, choosing Settings, scrolling down and then choosing Privacy Settings, then unchecking the checkbox that is labelled Make my profile public.

What do you mean FannyCornforth?

FannyCornforth Thu 11-Aug-22 10:21:11

Hello
I just meant that I thought that a lot of posters would be upset (there really are a lot of deletions) and that it might be difficult to get things going again.
Not that I think that it shouldn’t (get going, that is)
Good luck with your German one too SD. (I love Durer and will look at that museum later)

Excuse the pun, StarDreamer, but I think that that ship may have sailed

No, the cruise ship is due to depart on Monday.

Some travellers are currently in Munich, hoping to arrive in Venice on Friday afternoon.

The plan is to start a new thread for the cruise on Friday afternoon, then have the weekend exploring Venice.

This thread has become a planning thread.

Best to just move on. Live in the present and the future. Dream forward.

Okay, will do smile
Do you know, (of course you don’t!) I’ve been awake since midnight ?

Sorry to hear that Fanny maybe a kip in the stateroom is called for.

Just seen on the map that the Po runs close to Modena. I'd love to stop off there and visit the Casa Museo Luciano Pavarotti.

I haven’t heard the term ‘mixed company’ since my pearl clutching MIL died, bless her.

River Po is lending itself to Argy humour

HI - don't all laugh at once, but what is Argy humour, please? I don't want to get chucked overboard once we set sail because I didn't know. I hope this isn't a derailment.

What's wrong with Argy humour, please? Why is it not allowed? I enjoy it and have seen all the other women here enjoying it on other threads.

If you would like to discuss that please consider starting a new thread, For example in Chat or in Site issues. Or wherever you consider best.

For the avoidance of doubt I did not say it was not allowed, as if dictating,

I wrote the following.

> Can we have tacit agreement that the ambience is non-Argy please, as it is mixed company, and anyway not everyone wants Argy humour. The river Main virtual cruise was non-Argy.

I would have preferred vegan, but I have swayed in the breeze over that.

However, if Argy humour happens amongst some people then I would need to leave the thread. I will not become embrangled in it.

I am entirely willing to discuss that and debate the issue, but not in this thread as such a discussion would derail this thread.

That is interesting to know.

River Po is lending itself to Argy humour

But it would take a human being to apply it.

It is a matter for you as to whether you make a choice to do that, or to respect that this is mixed company.

Basically, rowdy hen party smut.

Baggytrazzas Thu 11-Aug-22 11:50:52

ok, thanks for clarifying. I am not usually rowdy hen party, but do sometimes have a " toilet" sense of humour, so maybe it would be best if I didn't join this time around because I don't want to get anyone into trouble or in fact detract from your efforts. But I hope you all enjoy your sail!

dragonfly46 Thu 11-Aug-22 11:56:07

The problem arises Stardreamer is that when you start a thread you try to own it and direct it the way you want. All threads on here go off on tangents that is the nature of the forum surely.

I am going to leave it here, however, as I am in danger of being suspended for simply interacting with you.

Well, it is not a matter of whether people ever do it, it is a matter of whether they do it in the thread.

Whether you choose to participate is for you to decide.

I cannot guarantee that the thread will not "go Argy" at some stage. However, if it does, I will leave and try to find something else to do instead.

Well, the Mainz river cruise went off on a tangent for a while, a very enjoyable tangent of a short cruise on another river and a visit to a city not on the planned route.

But it was all very polite company. So no problem.

Ooh, a little harsh there, StarDreamer, don't you think?

pincers Thu 11-Aug-22 12:33:27

It seems very harsh to me, and, by implication, not a nice thing to say about the many posters who enjoy a bit of Argy humour. I haven't noticed anybody else on the cruise objecting to it, please correct me if I'm wrong. It would inject some fun along the way wouldn't it? Otherwise it's just a long string of links to places to see and daily lessons in very basic Italian. Even what we can eat seems to be in doubt, though only a tiny proportion of the UK population are vegans. I don't think this is for me.

Joseanne Thu 11-Aug-22 12:35:17

Hen do?
That's good, I can pick up some ideas for my future wedding. Did you know there's is a lace museum on the island of Burano, near Venice which used to be the seat of the famous Burano Lace School from 1872 to 1970. Stunning pieces!
