Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.

You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

It was very good whitewave. We were going to go out for a meal but OH has a bit of IBS (travel + stress never a good combo) so this was a good option and only 20€.
There was a big demo here this morning but we came back at 1.30 knowing that they wouldn't be on the barricades at lunchtime. 
Love the French and their demonstrations. When you look back they have been with us all our lives.
I was in Paris in 1968!

Thank you for the good wishes. I just hope I shan't have to take steroids, but Dr Google thinks I have PMR! If so this thread will be invaluable. GP off next week so, unless I get a phone call, I see her on Tues 7th for results.

We are on holiday in N Wales. 5 hr. drive but I did surcome to a small ice cream on route. No cone though, I had a cardboard tub. Hope this is not the start of a slippery slope 
Rest of family due tomorrow . DH and I walking into town this evening for a curry, and to walk the ice cream off. It was delicious though.
Had to google PMR too shysal - hope it's a no to steroids, but if it is then don't despair as I'm sure NanKate can reassure you.

Went out for a lovely meal yesterday to a tiny, local restaurant with great reviews. Wonderful meal, all LC and without any fuss. Owned by just two men. One waits on, and the other cooks.
BB one thing I can resist is ice-cream....odd I know as I do have a sweet tooth. Hate the stuff 
Too right Anya I am happy to make suggestions to Shysal on coping whilst on steroids. I have found in a book on PMR a method of reducing the steroids in a more successful way.
Anyway back to LCHF.
Confession time, I took a small mouthful of my DH's cake yesterday and I was surprised at how yukky and sweet it was. I wonder if my tastes are changing.
Our curry last night was great. I had garlic prawns, followed by chicken korma and saag paneer ( spinach and cheese) . DH had a biryani with everything. It took 45 mins. To walk there and a lot longer on the way back as DHs wonky knee was hurting and he got a blister on his heel.
The ice cream was pistachio and another scoop of coconut. I must not think about it as I shall be tempted to have another.

As DiL was working yesterday and it was an INSET day, it fell to me to take GDs ( 4 & 6) to a 6th birthday party and happy to report I avoided eating anything, and without offending the hostess.
Was so whacked though I couldn't be bothered to cook a proper tea so just had bacon, eggs (chucks laying like mad so had surplus) mushroons and tomato. Defrosted a bun I'd made from flaxseed and DH shared that with the meal. Only 2g of carb per whole bun and 1g of sugar.
I'm also attempting to do 100 days wthout alcohol starting from yesterday. Don't know if I can but ......
I've just had an Ocado delivery - always a thrill!
Now, the pack of butternut noodles says to microwave but will they saute well as do courgetti, or will they turn to mush?
Phew. Catching up on washing, planting, weeding, strimming and grass-cutting.
Lunch was garlic sausage salad. For tonight, we got some lovely fresh wild salmon at the market, so will flash fry with hollondaise, a couple of tiny baby new potatoes and our own globe artichokes from the garden.
Anya I may join you in abstaining as I checked fasting blood sugar yesterday (friend has kit as she is diabetic) and mine has gone up from pre diabetic 5.6 to 6. I am soooo disappointed as have lost 9lbs and BMI is in normal range. I have been low carbing since doctor's warning re diabetes 3 months ago, but I do drink real ale. I hadn't had a drink all week when I checked it either. I have booked into diabetic clinic in 3 weeks, but am starting to stress that something else is causing raised blood sugar. Help...........

That's a fantastic weight loss...don't get upset you are doing really well. Blips are to be expected, the body's metabolism is very complex.
Just seen a preview of 'The truth about healthy eating' on BBC1 this coming Thursday at 9.00pm. From the blurb it looks as if it is similar to advice on this thread. Will be very interested to see what you folk think.

Well that was a good dinner. The salmon was lovely and the oven-baked artichokes (herbs lemon juice bit of oil and butter) worked really well.

Anya Thanks for encouragement. It is disappointing when I have been trying, but think may have been overcompensating for low carb by eating more. Mainly so that DH doesn't get hungry. After this weekend will drop the alcohol for a bit & see how it goes. Good luck to you too.
I think beer is something to avoid tbh. Wine maybe? (Practice for France) 
Today is egg and bacon for breakfast, pear and roquefort salad for lunch and roast chicken with cauli saff mash and braised chicory for dinner.
I would start practising for France if I wasn't confident EU vote will be to stay in.......Whoops - off thread. 
Absolutely - no politics shop in the mess. 
Lunchtime salad is pear, walnuts, leaves, avo, artichoke, cherry tomatoes and roquefort.
