On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Well done Alima for joining our friendly crew. You have done so well.

We will have to have a virtual party on our 2 year anniversary and your birthday. ?

I suspect if we hadn’t all kept together our bodies would be a lot bigger than they are now.

Keep going girls. Onwards and downwards ?

I have got on the scales this morning and am horrified at the numbers staring back at me ! I have decided I am starting a new healthy eating and exercise programme tomorrow morning. I know it should be today but, I have a delicious cheeseboard, nibble's and wine for tonight when we watch Killing Eve, and can not even contemplate not enjoying it all. I intend doing a 14 minute workout, yoga and a 30 minute walk each day. Fingers X crossed for me please.

CocoPops Mon 27-Apr-20 00:42:27

Congratulations Alima Excellent work.
No loss, no gain this week for me. Have a good week everyone.

Shirleyw Mon 27-Apr-20 03:58:55

Morning all.....weigh in day...yes...I'm mega early ...blame my sleeping pattern ?......remained the same so in SW eyes it's a maintain lol. Probably too much sitting in the garden drinking wine this weekend
Thought I'd start an SP week....haven't had a decent weight loss for ages, I did an SP week last year and lost nearly half a stone that week.

That's great Alimawell done.

Stay safe

Beechnut Mon 27-Apr-20 06:30:34

Well done Alima. I’ve a gain of 1/2lb this week. I know it was the food and drink that I had yesterday because I had been fairly steady all week.

luckyrose62 Mon 27-Apr-20 07:41:16

please can I join you, for inspiration. Myself and my husband are eating well and quite healthy (most of the time) a little too much though. Hate wasting , especially in these times if I make too much I end up just putting it on our plates. I do have some Rosemary Conley portion pots. Which is ok for cereals etc not too easy for cottage pie and stews etc for two.
I am turning into my mother who I started to nag when she was my age and overweight. HelpPlease!

NanKate Mon 27-Apr-20 07:42:21

Shirley was is an SP week ?

NanKate Mon 27-Apr-20 07:50:16

Welcome Luckyrose we are a great bunch of losers all with our own method of weight lose.

I started with the online NHS calorie counting method on 1,400 calories a day, although they recommended 1,200 for my age and weight, but it was too low for me. When I had got my weight down I then went onto portion control (eat drink anything I want but in smaller quantities) this has suited me well.

Perhaps you could research what method you and your DH would like to try. Quite a few of our members find the Slimming World method good.

Best of luck.

Whiff Mon 27-Apr-20 15:32:42

Luckyrose62 you will fine plenty of help and support . I have . Everyone is lovely here and no one judges. My way of lossing weight has been to weight and measure everything I eat and drink. Lost over 7 st but have been at it for 3 years now as at the age of 59 finally realised it's a marathon not a sprint. Gone from size 32 to 16. Don't want to be twiggy just 11st.

Been finding it a struggle but this week stayed the same as last. My weigh day is Sunday.

Remember to be kind to yourself. If you have a bad day don't feel guilty I wasted decades doing that. Just wish I could have told my younger self to do something about my weight in my 20's.

Shirleyw Mon 27-Apr-20 18:47:29

nankate. SP is speed food and protein food.....speed is the fruit and veg and protein meat, eggs, lentils etc...

NanKate Tue 28-Apr-20 12:33:40

Thanks Shirley.

I’ve lost 2 lbs, but this was due to me having IBS this week and losing my appetite. Must try and keep it off when I start eating properly again.

Whiff Tue 28-Apr-20 14:32:38

NanKate well done. I know you said it was down due to your IBS. But it's still a loss. Hope you are feeling back to your usual self soon.

NanKate Wed 29-Apr-20 06:59:25

Thanks Whiff ?

NanaPlenty Wed 29-Apr-20 10:06:47

I’d love to join you all. I feel in a real pickle at the moment - I absolutely must lose some weight (health not vanity but I would like to feel a bit better about my looks too). I feel so confused with all the varying advice out there that I end up starting something, stopping and then starting something else and never doing anything properly. I am hypothyroid and post menopause. I think I do need to reduce carbs and sugar for sure - anyone else in this boat with any tips?

NanaPlenty Wed 29-Apr-20 10:46:45

Has anyone tried the Second Nature (Our Path) plan?

AuntieMar Wed 29-Apr-20 16:01:19

I play a game with myself......It’s called Loose and Find.... with an unwanted bonus! Problem is I have been playing this game for years.....I must be getting better as the bonus keeps getting BIGGER!blush Sadly I am NOT getting better just BIGGER. Sometimes my life feels like an endless diets rolled into one. May I join you please? I need help. I feel like NanaPlenty regarding confusion. Resulting in ...start stop loose a lb and collect 3lbsshock Any help, suggestions, encouragement even berating would be very much appreciated.
Thank you, and stay safe.

NanKate Wed 29-Apr-20 22:27:12

NanaP and AuntieM you are most welcome to join us bunch of losers.

This is a thread for encouragement and definitely no berating.
You both need to decide what type of healthy eating plan you want to follow. I suggest you look back at this thread and check out what others are doing. I found the NHS Diet Plan worked well for me initially.

You need IMO to be deciding how you will eat for the rest of your life, not just a few weeks. Calorie counting initially for me and now just portion control.

NanaP you said you wanted to improve your appearance I suggest you watch the excellent videos from Stay Fabulous Forever featured here on Gransnet. There is advice on make up, wearing bright colours and costume jewellery from Tricia the MD. You don’t need to buy new makeup you can just follow her tips, I do and just occasionally buy a lipstick or eye shadow but that’s all.

During this Lockdown I make a point of doing my makeup, hair and wear bright clothes. DH might be the only one who sees it but I feel better if I have made an effort.

Remember you can have an occasional binge but never for more than a day.

Best of luck and report in regularly whatever the situation, you will find some great support on this thread.

AuntieMar Thu 30-Apr-20 10:45:19

Thank you for your welcome NanKate.thankssmile
I have decided I need to count calories...and yes this has to be Lifelong plan. But initially I have started with 5:2. I need to lose some lbs and NOT find them AGAINconfused
Sorry I don’t understand IMO?
I love your advice for attending to our appearance during lockdown.
I am working full time (as we back up the health Depts.)As a result normal make up etc. but any suggestions for a ‘hair do by mail’?!!shock
Thank you again and I will report back.
To all stay well and safe.

NanKate Thu 30-Apr-20 17:37:47

Well done for starting AuntieM.

IMO = In my opinion. ?

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 22:04:37

Hi NanKate I'd live to join you, please.
I'm 62, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis diagnosed 7 years ago. Looking back always had slow metabolism.
Anyway, while I put on/took off small amounts and baby weight, the hypo sent me up by 5st. Got 2.5st off then .5st up.
I like 16:8 as I can do it. Also, no sugar, biscuits, cakes etc my problem is getting back on the wagon if I drop away.

Whiff Sun 03-May-20 09:01:39

Morning all. Put on 0.5lb this week but not stressing about it. Think what had been keeping my weight stable was going in the garden everyday. Haven't been able to do that as the weather was against me. Been stressful this week have got a squirrel in my loft. Heard it last Sunday night and went to sleep at my daughter's. Pest control were here Monday and put out traps. Had my roofers here Tuesday and Wednesday squirrel proofing the roof. All was quiet Monday night but had to sleep at my daughter's Tuesday and Wednesday night. Annoyed with myself it scared me. But living on my own in a bungalow and hearing it as if it was trying to get through the ceiling and running up and down unnerved me. Had ask pest control to come on Friday to take another look but didn't come. Will phone tomorrow. Already had pre arranged visit for 11th. Fly invasion started Friday so my daughter taped up the edges to the loft hatch. Unfortunately even underlock down still need help with something's. My roofers are back tomorrow to check the roof again and pointing the gable end which was planned. They are outside so don't feel worried and they are a lovely father and son team.

Hope everyone has a good week health and weight wise.

NanKate Sun 03-May-20 09:07:13

You are very welcome Brigid. I have an underactive thyroid so fully understand about a slow metabolism. This is the place to come to as we understand what it is like to fall off the wagon but there is always someone here to encourage you back. Try and make a point of calling in here once a week whatever the situation.

Whiff that squirrel business sounds awful. Hope you can get it all sorted soon.

NanaPlenty Sun 03-May-20 11:19:18

Thank you NanKate and everyone else - just got to sort my head out and get started ?

NanaPlenty Sun 03-May-20 11:21:10

I think I definitely need to keep a food diary - calorie count so at least I can see how many calories I’m actually consuming. Will keep you all posted ?

fourormore Sun 03-May-20 12:09:26

Oh Whiff what a horrible week you've had but hopefully it looks like things are being sorted.
You coped though so give yourself a pat on the back!!!
It's good to hear you're not stressing re the half pound gain as it is down to the lack of our usual lifestyle.
I am 188.8lb this morning - a loss of 0.8lb but again I am steady so not freaking out - there's no point and we are all monitoring ourselves!
As long as I stay in the same ballpark I am content - we all need to keep an eye for any bigger weight gains but accept that we are not leading normal lives. Once we get back to our normal day to day lives we can begin to focus properly and, in my case definitely, get more exercise!
Welcome to our several newbies - it's great to have new faces among us!
We had the most beautiful complete (in some places 'double') rainbow on Thursday evening just as we were clapping the NHS and key-workers - the promise that all will be well.
Keep up the good work fellow strugglers - we will get there! flowersflowersflowers to us all!
