On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Whiff Mon 02-Aug-21 07:22:50

Dorset glad work is sorted out and any lose is a win. Staying the same is as well. Look forward to your cheery posts.

Sarah well done with the lose. I am feeling lot better thank you. I don't like scotch eggs but love pork pie and sausages. The smell must be so tempting. Making them yourself means you know it's real food no additives. I have never made sausages but made scotch eggs and pork pies . In my old life I was a cook. Never called myself chef as it seems pompous. I am trained. Hence my life long battle with my weight. Both my parents where good cooks.

Because of my love of pork pie and sausages . I don't buy pork pie and have Quorn sausages instead .

Sarah your Scotch Eggs sound yummie ?

Shirleyw Tue 03-Aug-21 04:32:43

I love scotch eggs . Bet you had a great day Sarah at cookery school. Delias CCC is the recipe I use, Lorraine Pascale has a nice recipe of scotch eggs where they are baked not deep fried….still high in calls though ?.

ashamed to say 3lb up…..so that’s 4 lb in 2 weeks….hope I have a minus next week girls.
Hope the weather stabilises a bit, wet all weekend, yesterday was ok…
Keep well

NanKate Tue 03-Aug-21 07:46:12

No need to be ashamed Shirley it happens to us all. Keep going. Onward and downward.

Whiff Tue 03-Aug-21 08:59:43

Shirley its a blip. We all have them. But be proud of what you have achieved and you haven't given up. It would be easy to give up. I did that for decades. But you never have . Chin up today's a new day. ?

NanKate Tue 03-Aug-21 21:37:06

Hello dear Pears
Apologies for not having posted for a couple of weeks, and congratulations to you all for carrying on carrying on. User777 asks about the 800 fast diet- I second NanKate’s wise words - it’s all about sustainability- you’ve got to be able to live, and enjoy your life- and food plays it’s part. Fourormore, your method sounds very sensible - it’s all a balance and everybody has to find their own. Whiff- I started reading ( and agreeing about your measuring), and then read on to your ghastly night in hospital - it sounds dreadful. I hope you are feeling much better now. Was it during the really hot weather? That in itself can make hearts work harder than normal. Sarahmob, your cookery classes sound yummy- pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation to scoff everything I ‘d made, so well done you! Shirley, everyone is quite right- blips will happen, it’s the not giving up that gives us the results we want. And Dorset, it’s good to hear from you again.
Life here feels busy ( comparatively!) at the mo’ - daughter’s birthday, our anniversary, day trips and generally just trying to make the most of the summer and the ( again comparative) freedom to visit places, even with timed tickets. ( Actually makes for a more pleasant experience, imho. Never been a fan of crowds.) Went out out - nice dress, high heels etc etc for the first time in forever last night to celebrate 32 years of conjugal bliss( mostly), going for tiny “staycation “ in Kent next week, seeing daughter who needs a hug - newish baby, no sleep etc etc- tomorrow, so am going to have to be really strict with myself in between times, and to not do the bonkers eating of a food addict when I let myself slightly off the leash. Being accountable here is really helpful- like an extra conscience. I can and will keep bu****ing on.?

Morning fellow strugglers! Before I admit my weight I need to say that it is not my fault blushblushblush
The week before last a neighbour asked my DH to collect her paper from the shop each morning when he went for his - she had been 'pinged' and had to stay at home. No problem at all obviously.
However, this week she knocked on our door and presented us with a beautiful box of butter shortbread just to say thank you!
It obviously was lovely of her, even though there was no need as he goes every morning without fail anyway and passes their door. Naturally it would have been rude not to accept wouldn't it? hmmhmmhmm
Sadly they also had to be tested and my friend Will (surname Power) left the building sadsadsad
The result is a one pound gain which I am cross with as it was unnecessary - come back Will!!!!
They have all gone now so determined effort next week!
We need a treat sometimes though don't we!
Good luck to all my fellow strugglers - good to see regulars returning flowersflowersflowers

May I join please?
Stood on the scales this morning, shock, horror. From my smug yearly checkup in March, well within my BMI, I’ve gained nearly 6lb. No wonder my jeans are snug.

Whiff Sun 08-Aug-21 10:01:17

Shirley hope you had a good time with your daughter.

JoMarch it was overcast when I went to the hospital. The air conditioning was on full blast which made it freezing. Luckily I had taken my cotton anorak but at one point during the night did contemplate putting my pj top and dressing gown on under the anorak as I had a short sleeve t shirt on. I always take a packed bag with overnight things plus my tablets just in case. Got caught out the first time I ended up in A&E and had to spend the night.

Feeling lot better but speaking to GP in the morning going to as to be referred back to the cardiology team. Because I can hear when my heart misses beats I have tried to find if there is a pattern to the missing beats but there isn't. It's very annoying hearing it.

Sounds like you are keeping busy and out of mischief.,?. Enjoy your stay in Kent. Hopefully the weather will pick up.

Must have got my weight loss mojo back lost 1.75lbs this week. Went to my exercise class on Wednesday. Emily who runs it wasn't there as her boyfriend had tested positive for Covid even though she has been double jabbed and tested negative twice she had to isolate with him. No one else came so I had my own personal trainer Craig. The class usually takes 45mins but with just me going none stop it took 30 mins. Really pleased as did things I didn't think I could do. Don't laugh but we do egg and spoon it's to help with balance and stability. My hands have a tremor and use my right hand for my stick. Amazed myself I didn't drop the egg once. Even when the blocks I have to stride over where 2 high.

Went to my daughter's as usual on Friday for lunch ,play and babysitting. My older grandson was really pleased nannie could go up the stairs this week to play in his room. I have my weekly treat when they come back from swimming . This week they had made choc chip cookies. But I only have one.

My grandson had asked to make blueberry jam with me but explained it was to dangerous for him yet. But once he is older I will teach him. So Thursday morning made 7lb of blueberry jam and gave them 4 jars.

My friend from U3A came on the morning but I had potted the jam by 9am. Had a nice visit.

We'll have a good week everyone ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 08-Aug-21 11:36:07

Good morning lovely pears ?.
It's so lovely to hear how you are all doing and what you are all getting up to!
I certainly think we are all aware of the impact in the change to our routine as we socialize more with friends and family. Its tricky but as Fourormore so wisely said we all need a treat sometimes. I certainly am more adventurous in the past month or so. Two minutes walk from my office is a little cafe and I must admit my regular lunch has been a bacon bap-grilled with no butter/ sauces and a coffee. Previously i would eat an energy bar at my desk! To my delight on Friday i went to one of my favourite cafes which is run by the church and supports staff with disabilities. I will admit to a small hand made sausage roll. It was lovely but also chosen for speed.! My eldest daughter has been down with her family and there have been gatherings at friends in their gardens. Lots of treats and things I wouldnt have eaten a few months ago but I have tried very hard to balance it out and avoid the old in for a penny in for a pound(literally ?)attitude. My weight has stayed the same, which all considered I'm happy about?.
I think as we all now realise these meetings with friends and family are so precious and a glass of wine or some other treats is a core part of that-the sitting around a table and sharing both the experience and the food. It's about admiring a small piece of home made cake etc and not eating 3 slices?!
So I will be back on a stricter track this week?.
I do love cooking occasionally though and I can imagine the lovely aromas Sarahmob ?. I have always felt that if I'm going to have a high calorie treat it has to be the best quality to make it worth the calories !
Shirleyw I'm a big fan of Delia especially her sausage/ veggie rolls and bread sauce-well worth the effort! It's been a strange summer here-weatherwise as well as everything else! Although it's not over yet my thoughts are turning to autumn which I love!
Theres a lot to be said for a healthy casserole bubbling away in the slow cooker ready for my return from work.
I totally agree with JoMarch that being accountable here is a massive help. It emphasizes the similar struggles we all have whatever direction the scales go in?.
Welcome Jaxjacky and good luck. I always think how clothes fit and feel is an excellent guide. Always worrying when the most generous of elasticated waists are starting to pinch!
Well done on the loss Whiff. I love hearing about your grandsons and your activities. ♥️.
Good luck all for the coming week?

Whiff Sun 08-Aug-21 11:53:26

As it takes me so long to type one fingered crossed posts.

Four it's a blip and anyway who can resist shortbread. Mr Will Power deserted me for 7 weeks and his half brother Mr Stay Same lived with me but glad to say the last 2 weeks Will has come back into my life. Just hope he stays and his half brother doesn't come back until I reach 11st. Then he can stay for ever.

Jaxjacky welcome to our merry band. I was very glad to join NanKate's band of pears. And found friendship and support through all my ups and downs. No one judges there are no nasty posters unlike some threads I have read. We all have the same goal to lose weight. If you have read any of the posts you see we all have our own ways of losing. Remember it's a marathon not a sprint. And be kind to yourself. If you have a bad day food wise let it go and tomorrows a new day. We all have blips . But don't give up.

Looking forward to reading your posts and getting to know you. ?

Whiff Sun 08-Aug-21 12:00:40

Did it again with my slow typing.

Dorset wonderful to read your usual chatty post. The weather has been like autumn the last few days. I've put a vest back on and got my winter dressing gown out. Really need to check my greenhouse but the winds are very high here. So staying inside. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Enjoy your stew it will taste amazing.

NanKate Sun 08-Aug-21 14:43:21

JaxJacky you are in good company here. Lots of support from the lovely Pears.

I love your descriptions Whiff of the stages in your weight ups and downs. ?

Jaxjacky Sun 08-Aug-21 15:40:16

Thank you all, I’ll start tomorrow, I have been here before, some time ago. I’ve become lazy, both in activity and cooking.

Shirleyw Tue 10-Aug-21 01:30:29

Morning all……stayed the same….hope to have a decent loss next week.
Hope your all ok….have a good week.

Whiff Tue 10-Aug-21 07:22:53

Shirley well done staying the same. I know it's not what you want but it shows when you reach your goal you can maintain a weight. Well that's what I tell myself when I don't lose weight for weeks?.

Have a good week ☺️

Shirleyw Wed 11-Aug-21 05:09:09

Thanks whif….hows you?

I’m upping my water intake, sometimes wonder if I get a bit dehydrated…. besides my usual teas and coffees I have a litre and a half bottle of water on the worktop, I ve been drinking that throughout the day( fill a glass not out of bottle ?) try and flush out , see if I can keep that up….I do drink tap water but I like highland spring (still) also it comes in litre and a half bottles , don’t they recommend that amount to 2 litres daily?….one draw back is tiddling a lot lol…..

Weather seems settled again, here’s to a sunny next few days ?

Rosycheeks Sat 14-Aug-21 18:16:53

Hi everyone just joining. Ive just started my 1200 a day diet and am doing well so far.
I have a lot of weight to lose so I will keep looking in for your support. I have a twist and shape machine that is just gathering dust so im going to start that too. At the moment I am very eager to lose as I have a load of nice clothes just hanging in the wardrobe that do not fit me . I have a lovely black kilt that ive never worn I think its a size 16 and Im a 20 at the moment?. So im going to use that as my goal. Wish me luck. Rosy.

Shirleyw Sat 14-Aug-21 19:18:41

Hi rosycheeks, welcome and well done, I do 1450 calls daily, I do the nhs healthy choice app…

fourormore Sun 15-Aug-21 10:31:48

Isn't it great to see new faces joining us!!!
Welcome all - you will find total support on our thread and we all will get there, just at different times!
Having had a good loss three weeks ago I put on over the last two weeks and undid all the progress - however I'm pleased to say I've more or less taken it off again and am now just short of the 175lb that I had achieved.
Hey ho! Life is full of ups and downs - hopefully more downs than up weightwise!
Rosie and Jacxy stick with us as you will receive support and encouragement by the bucketload.
Good luck to everyone as we continue our mission!!!

Welcome Rosy you are amongst friends here ,plenty of help and support. Wish you well on your weight loss journey. If you have read any of the posts you will have seen we have our ups and downs but keep plodding along.

Shirley I am feeling well at the moment. Spoke to my GP on Monday he has put me on a different anti reflux tablet but this can effect your magnesium levels so I going to take a magnesium tablet to counteract it. He has given me a months supply and then need a blood test. Hopefully I can stay on it. Luckily I haven't had any side effects from it. I also asked to be referred back to the cardio team. As I have eptopic heart beats now and want to know if they are going to do further tests to see what my heart defect is and if it can be fixed. Had the referral letter come yesterday. If I haven't heard from them by the 24th I have to phone them. I know I will have to go on the waiting list but once on I will be seen eventually.

Well my weight has stayed the same. My own fault had 2 binge days. Friday and yesterday. Friday was my son's 34th and grandsons 3rd birthdays. I wished them happy birthday out loud. Yesterday was a year ago all the presents cards etc plus that final letter came back. You will laugh what I binged on. Porridge with jam and bite size shredded wheat with blueberry in the middle. I know both are healthy foods but not the quantity I ate. ?

Very glad I don't buy bread as I would have eat a whole loaf .

Back to being a good girl today. Have a good week everyone. ?

Whiff Sun 15-Aug-21 11:01:01

Four we crossed posts . That's good news . Well done.

Forgot to say went to my exercise class on Wednesday afternoon. What I love about it is our instructor explaining why we do certain exercises. On of them is we have to walk up to the block and make sure we put our foot fully on it and then stride over it making sure we lift over back leg high enough. She said most people fall because they forget to lift their back leg high enough to get onto the kerb or step. Which makes sense.

Was showing my daughter and grandson's some of my exercises and my older grandson was doing them. His brother was happy rolling round the floor . ?
