Tonight we had Chicken Kiev with Lyonnaise potatoes. I have to admit the CK was not made by me but a local butcher whose ready meals are really, really good but I did make the Lyonnaise potatoes myself and I know I shouldn`t blow my own trumpet but it was a good meal

LOL - on a positive note though - you'll have so much more nail bite through not to mention stronger nail grin

Elegran Sun 03-Aug-14 12:40:55

I think it has to be the kind of jelly with natural gelatine in it (animal based) not one with caragheen, or any of the other things that jell. The gelatine from bones etc contributes collagen to your nails.

HollyDaze Sun 03-Aug-14 12:50:17

I've never heard of caragheen but have just looked it up (could only find 'carrageen' - is it the same thing? from red seaweed?) it looks frightening stuff to consume!

Elegran Sun 03-Aug-14 12:57:26

I have seen it spelt both ways. You don't see it when you eat it in jelies and things - it is in many manufactured things, just read the ingredients on a carton of dessert. By the time it has gone through a food factory, it is unrecognisable!

You can buy sachets of "vegetarian gelatine" which have no bone gelatine in.

HollyDaze Sun 03-Aug-14 13:00:40

The article I read said 'Carrageenan, which has no nutritional value, has been used as a thickener and emulsifier to improve the texture of ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, soy milk and other processed foods.'

A change of diet might be in order methinks sad

I have just Googled gelatine and nails and found some people swear by it, others say that it contains nothing that could help. You pays your money and you takes your pick!

Nonu, I've done the next best thing and put the recipe on the recipe thread.

Carageen is used in many, many things from toothpaste to puddings to pet food. It's a thickener derived from seaweed and I came across it years ago in breweries used as a beer clarifier. It's called E407 on food labels these days and wiki says it is said to be harmless to our insides.

newist Sun 03-Aug-14 15:29:14

Local people pick it here and dry it, to make a kind of blancmange, its lovely.

Not according to this chap:

Casserole of lamb, courgettes, chickpeas and shallots with cumin, dried lime, cinnamon and saffron. Followed by half a fig each (ripening one at a time) raspberries and strawberries from the garden.

OH has spent 6 hours preparing fourteen different vegetables from the garden for minestrone for tonight's dinner. Happily there are about ten portions to go in the freezer.

Simple and easy to make

vegasmags Sun 10-Aug-14 13:36:05

I'm happy to say that I will be having roast lamb with all the trimmings, cooked by a friend whose speciality is the roast dinner! My only contribution has been to pick some mint from the garden and make the mint sauce.
