Glad I'm NOT a grandparent

Both my children (32 and 35) have announced that they do not want children - and I am quite relieved!
So why when I tell people this (usually when they have been droning on about their grandchildren for the last hour) do they feel they have to say, 'Don't worry, they may change their minds', or say something that clearly implies that I am unnatural or weird in some way.
I am 60 and retired. I have a couple of dogs to walk and that is enough of a tie for me. I do not want to babysit, or take children to the park, or have them to sleep over. I've been there and done that with my own two when I was young enough to get on my hands and knees to play.
I think what I'm trying to say to all you grandparents out there is that there are people like me who are not worried in the slightest that they do not have grandchildren, have plenty of other things to do in retirement and are not selfish/ miserable/ peculiar.
Why am I on this site? Well, firstly to get the message above out to those of you who think I am strange/ will change that I am not and will not. And secondly because I came across this site when Googling the positives of not having grandchildren. Apparently there are none! I would beg to differ and would be happy to list them, but some of you might consider me 'negative'.
So all you grandparents out there, enjoy the next generation if that gives you pleasure, but please don't pity me or think I'm weird. And no, I don'to want hear about your grandchildren. Could we talk about you instead?

Have you noticed how a few threads have been started, then the original poster shrinks away never speaks again and leaves everyone to argue between themselves Is this a ploy?

Or, as DH says:
Light Blue Touch Paper and Retire grin

We had a friend who was an expert in this, and MIL was quite good at it too grin

Jessielovestuna I don't quite see the link between going to the zoo and your "but . . . . posters on Gransnet are not how they used to be" Is it that posters used to go to the zoo but now they are too grown-up to do that? Zoos these days are not how they used to be either - they are about information and conservation, not about taking children to gawk at terrified animals in boxes with iron bars on the front.

What is different about Gransnet as it was four or five years ago and as it is now is the size. It is now in the same league as Facebook and Twitter (not so far up the league, but it is wellknown and frequently quoted in the nedia).

Facebook and Twitter contain a lot of stuff that is really only there so that someone can see their posts and the responses to them as they happen. The temptation to post something and see what replies you get is very strong. It is easy to join and use, there are no filters for age, and you get an instant audience of grans - who, let's face it, have this image of being easily shocked and ultra-conservative (small c). And you don't need to be there in person to discuss your opinion, you can sit back while others get hot under the collar defending or attacking it.

So there are more posts now of that nature. Some are from people who go on to discuss what they have posted, and to join in other conversations, some are never heard from again, for one reason or another. Among those are a few whose motives are suspect.

jessielovestuna has observed that poster on GN are not what they used to be? Could you elaborate on that? In what way and, more importantly when?
I ask as I have come across your name for the first time in the last few days - surely we have not change that much in 72 hours? confused
Or perhaps you have been here before under another username? hmm

Jalima Sat 01-Oct-16 10:58:01

Oh! I get it now! wink

shock shock shock shock shock shock shock shockshock

is that the right response?

Zoo?

I loved this song, still have it somewhere on an LP:

Bellanonna Sat 01-Oct-16 11:06:19

For sure, Jalima !

Bellanonna Sat 01-Oct-16 11:11:18

Post yesterday 23.50 bit unusual for a newcomer ????

DaphneBroon Sat 01-Oct-16 11:13:20

Ah, I see now.

Elegran Sat 01-Oct-16 11:13:30

Hi, J.

Bellanonna Sat 01-Oct-16 11:17:38

I like the name, too !

DaphneBroon Sat 01-Oct-16 11:20:48

I am a simple soul and clearly slow on the uptake. Plus when a person says something like;

No roses I am not Jings. I could never fill her boots

I tend to assume they are telling the truth confused

Ana Sat 01-Oct-16 11:25:21

Jessielovestuna uses some words that jingl never uses (e.g. 'dotes')

Of course, that could be part of the cunning plan...

Bellanonna Sat 01-Oct-16 11:29:03

And others that she does. FFS for example? Not conclusive, I know, and scanty evidence thus far. Yes, the "I could never fill her boots" was a bit misleading. But again, a ploy perhaps? Jessie comments on how GN in 2016 has changed, but she's a newcomer. Or is she?

Ana Sat 01-Oct-16 11:34:16

But she could just have meant that grandparents have changed these days, in that they're not the cuddly old dears our own were (well, one pair of mine was!)

Jalima Sat 01-Oct-16 11:38:31

If she could never fill her boots that means she knows what the other person was like:
"Filling someone's shoes" means doing the job that they used to do. You use this expression when the first person did a good job.
grin

DaphneBroon Sat 01-Oct-16 11:41:09

Not " grans in general", Ana

Jessielovestuna Sat 01-Oct-16 01:18:03
I am glad you enjoyed your time at the zoo Elegran, but can't you see that the 2016 posters on Gransnet are not how they used to be

Im68Now Sat 01-Oct-16 11:41:54

princesspamma Do you know what's worst than doing the school run, doing the school run when its raining, you've got to carry their school bags and try to keep them dry and watch were you're going, but no I don't suppose you ever will now, you're just to old and it showed in your post and you're certainly in your own little world which you thoroughly enjoy.

Have a nice day smile

rosesarered Sat 01-Oct-16 11:42:48

I resent that! I am a cuddly old dear.?

rosesarered Sat 01-Oct-16 11:44:14

My post was to Ana btw

Ana Sat 01-Oct-16 11:46:33

Sorry roses, that came out wrong - I meant they weren't as active or as young in their outlook as they tend to be nowadays...(can still be old and cuddly, of course!)

DaphneBroon Sat 01-Oct-16 11:47:02

confusedconfused

Jalima Sat 01-Oct-16 11:47:33

I am hoping to have two lovely cuddles any time soon smile

rosesarered Sat 01-Oct-16 11:47:55

Only joking Ana don't know about cuddly, could do with losing more than a few pounds though.

DaphneBroon Sat 01-Oct-16 11:48:02

That was to im68now, clearly I have missed something.
Like the sound of the brown suede boots though!
