30 bags in 30 days decluttering method

Would anybody like to join me in this?

I’ve read about a method where you chuck out/donate one bag of clutter every day for 30 days. As an inveterate hoarder who wants to get on top of things at last, I’m going to go for it! (Only a carrier bag, mind. Not a big refuse sack.)

Tomorrow I’ll start with a bag of books to take to the charity shop. The day after, maybe some clothes. By recording my progress on here, I’m hoping to keep up the good work.

Wish me luck!

We went through a phase of eating jelly ( I learned how to make trifle). But it has all expired. I wouldn’t usually bother with BB dates but the packaging has deteriorated. How do I dispose of it? Will it go into the compost bin? Or should I just put the whole lot in the bin. I feel so awful sending it to landfill. I’ve also got gelatin that’s expired but I think that’s ok to still use.

Can you soak off the packaging in cold water, put the jelly in the food recycling but I think the packaging would have to go into general waste.

Done nothing today but have offered a large item to someone who might want it; he's coming to look tomorrow. 🙂

Me: "this wool is brand new, unopened"

Ooh, which shop, where???

(No, you really don't need more wool, Callistemon)

I can put the jelly in recycling. I might put it in the freezer with the latest chicken carcass and put it out on collection day. Can old dog kibble go in the green bin, too? I used to buy a large bag for economy but she only has it for supper and I read that kibble should be used asap once the bag has been opened and I realised it might be the reason why she gets a bad tum every now and again.

I have 2 bow-front corner cupboards I don't know what to do with.
Was hoping one of my "girls" would like them as they were my parents' and they really loved them. I took them down to decorate but don't really want them... 🤔

They aren’t mid century classic are they? There’s a market for things like that. I’ve got a tv guy coming out on Tuesday. He’s going to sort out my catchup problem, look at all the old tv’s I’ve got and advise me if I need to buy a new tv for the living room. This has needed doing for such a long time and I’m quite excited about it. I don’t really know what size of tv to have in the living room: I don’t like the massive tv’s that people have these days. I think he’s used to doddery old technophobes like me!

If you're talking to me, maybe, no. One is Georgian an I think the other is older.
Dark wood. The older one has some damage. Traditional H hinges.

Some more gone today, part is just purposeful using up and not replacing in my store cupboard, sugar for marmalade. I unearthed some bits for fermenting so they are now binned, I will never be fermenting kimchi etc again. I suppose all in all, a carrier bag worth

Someone is coming this afternoon to collect a bag of old files and folders. I was surprised anyone wanted them, as most people have gone paperless.

So that's a bag for today.

I’m a late starter, but began my decluttering exercise yesterday and took 3 bags of towels & bed linen to our hospice charity shop. Will carry on, as this really needs to be done.
(Don’t forget if you pay tax you can be a gift aider, and the charity will get 25% more on the goods they sell.)

Patsy70 Sat 11-Feb-23 15:26:14

Oh, I have some old files, Doodledog. There’s no stopping me now!

Welcome to the checkout zone, Patsy grin It's addictive once you get started.

Is anyone watching the Stacey Solomon programme? She and her team go into houses where people have serious clutter issues and clear the house of everything, putting it all in a warehouse so the owners can see how much of everything they've got - one woman had 443 pairs of shoes! Then they have to pick what to keep and what to get rid of, and the team clean and decorate the house ready for them to come back. It makes such a difference. The last episode featured a young family where the dad had ADHD. The house and his workshop were overrun with clutter, and he was overwhelmed by it all. They sorted it our and labelled drawers and cupboards so that he knew where everything belonged when he tidied up. It made such a difference. My house is nowhere near as bad as the ones on there, but thinning out the 'stuff' creates room to tidy up, and makes the place seem so much calmer.

That should have been 'chuckout', not checkout!

Is anyone watching the Stacey Solomon programme?

I watched that one episode with the young family where the father had ADHD, started projects, didn't finish them and left his stuff everywhere. The mother seemed just overwhelmed, saying she sometimes got home from work, sat in the car and dreaded going in. They found a couple of thousand pounds scattered around the house, either in cash or unwashed cheques! I do hope they can keep up their new way of a tidier life and don't relapse.

Nick Knowles started off with a similar programme, I prefer his presentation style, Stacey is too huggy/kissy.

Tried to get rid of a medium sized item today but we have to await a decision, if not wanted it goes to the charity shop 🙂

Karmalady can I ask about your Keter storage containers? Are they easy to put together and are they pretty weather proof?

We have a new-build garden and I’d prefer not to have a shed but need some storage. I’ve seen a few reviews saying they’re a bit tricky to put together and bits such as hinges snap off. I’m hoping you’ll tell me neither of those things has happened to you!

karmalady Sat 11-Feb-23 17:06:45

Sue, oh yes I love my keter units. The 2 biggest are called store it out, from amazon. They have never been wet inside. Very easy to put together, every piece is marked and the pieces click into place. Decent pictoral instructions, step by step

The others are keter city outdoor also from amazon. A wonderful size for me to use for sawing wood, potting plants etc. I have several of those and again they do not leak. They were a doddle to put together

karmalady Sat 11-Feb-23 17:09:53

my garden is new build and those keter units will never need preserving and they will never rot. They are also lightweight and can be moved. They all have an interior base and I put some slabs down for one of the large ones. Just slabs on soil, using a spirit level

googling will find best prices

Yes totally agree. I watch both programmes and Stacey is a lovely woman but all the hugging and kissing really annoys me. Nick is better at motivating people to get rid of stuff.

I could do with one of them coming to sort out my "summer house" otherwise known as the OH's dumping place and I would prefer Nick to do it! Stacey and her sidekick seem to spend too much time on faffy things for me.

Callistemon21 Sat 11-Feb-23 17:54:51

Yes, I need Nick
It's slow progress at Callistemon Manor!

Perhaps too much faffing here.

SueDonim Sat 11-Feb-23 18:35:16

Thanks you, Karma! They sound excellent for what I want. There’s a smallish gap down the side of the house where I think they’d fit very nicely.

I sorted my spice and cookery condiments cupboard on Thursday. I could easily have given people food poisoning when I saw some of the dates. I replaced some on Friday and used the fennel seeds to cook. they really made a difference.
I only buy Sainsbury jars but find they last too long. maybe that's why the Christmas cake and pudding were not as good as last year.
Also found three half-used tubes of tomato puree so they went with the fennel seeds to make an Italian dish. Now I can see at a glance what I do and don't have.
It's cooking utensils on Monday away from prying eyes. I have found a system of moving unwanted ones to the back of a never used cupboard and they will go next week.
Unfortunately, my stash in the airing cupboard was found and is now walking around the house on DH.

Doodledog Sat 11-Feb-23 19:14:54

Yes, I saw the ADHD chap, and really felt for him (and yes, all that money, when they were so hard up!) I understand the overwhelm - I may have ADD myself - and also hope that they can keep on top of their newly organised space.

I haven't seen Nick Knowles' version, but agree that Stacey is rather irritating. A friend put me onto the programmes, and I watched the shoe lady and the ADHD man on iPlayer this afternoon.

Norah Sat 11-Feb-23 21:33:41

Today we did the freezer, old or past dated - out, containers saved.

MayBee70 Sat 11-Feb-23 21:56:30

I went through my spices just before the pandemic started when we did a massive stock up. I try to write BB dates on everything with a marker pen when I buy them now. I was watching the Stacey Dooley programme, too. I missed the end of it but there was a lot of criticism of the house where the rabbits were moved into a tiny hutch in the garden. I’ve got some pea protein that’s several months over its BB date. It was in the throwing out pile but I’m having second thoughts.

MayBee70 Sat 11-Feb-23 21:58:02

I meant Stacey Solomon…I always get them mixed up!
