Post a cheque

I need to pay in a cheque. All of my local branches have closed. I know I can pay it in at the Post Office but I did this last year and the PO lost the cheque and it took weeks to sort out. Can I post this cheque to my nearest branch that is open with a paying in slip from my cheque book. Has anyone done this recently. Thanks

I haven’t? Can you pay it in through your bank App if you have one?

welbeck Tue 18-Jun-24 09:59:40

can you take a photo of it, as suggested above.
i've seen people doing that.

Sago Tue 18-Jun-24 10:02:47

It’s very easy to pay via the app.

truman Tue 18-Jun-24 10:25:58

I do not have a smart phone so I cannot use the app.

I'm pretty sure you can put the cheque and paying-in slip in an envelope and post it to the bank.

Or you could call customer services and ask them?

We have no local branches open anymore but there is one a few miles away in a large town. I got a friend to go there and pay in a cheque for me - is that a possibility?

Yes Truman - you can post it , with a paying- in slip. Make sure you write your name and a/c number at the back and take a photo of it, front and back. I’m not good at technology, but how have you posted this ?

Do you have an iPad or other tablet the app could go on?

We don’t have cheques anymore. I am surprised you do, usually the UK is ahead of us.

I have not posted it yet. Where I lived before I used to put cheques in an envelope and put it in the outside post box of my bank if I was shopping too early and the bank was not open. This time I would have to put it in the mail to the bank which I think would be ok. I do not have anyone to take it to the bank for me.

I used to quite often post cheques for paying in.
I always sent them to my "home" branch but think you could send them anywhere.

I've also paid them in by scanning them.

NotSpaghetti Tue 18-Jun-24 10:50:29

I'd be happy posting them. Never had any problems doing this. Last one was a couple of years ago but not so very different now I'd think.

Calendargirl Tue 18-Jun-24 10:53:31

In your shoes, I would risk the PO again, thinking surely it will be ok this time?

welbeck Tue 18-Jun-24 10:54:47

ring your bank and ask.

NotSpaghetti Tue 18-Jun-24 10:58:44

nanna8 cheques are quite rare now I think.
They do still exist but mostly we have card/bank/phone payments now.
I pay my window cleaner by bank transfer for example. That would have been cash in the "old days". Even my 100 year old mother-in-law doesn't write cheques anymore.

I would have to turn out a drawer here to find my checkbook! I have a business checkbook also and think I've used it once since 2016.

i asked my bank to write a banker's draft for a particular purpose.
from my account funds, obviously.
they said they couldn't do that, didn't seem to know what i meant.
when i mentioned the word cheque, trying to explain, they said would i like a cheque book for my account.
while i waited.
they brought it out, with about 5 cheques in it and showed it to each other, marvelling.
they then found a cover for it and proudly presented it to me.
they had printed/bound it the wrong way round, and the stubs were on the outside, so in detaching the written cheque, the stub was there too.
i just detached the stub and put it inside the cover.
for my records.
an interesting experience.

I do not write cheques anymore either. This is a building society cheque. When I asked why the money could not be paid to me by bank transfer, they said unless it was one of their bank accounts it would have to be a cheque. I cannot see what difference it makes. How old fashioned is that. This is a very well know BS as well.

welbeck 😱

How extraordinary! Funny but shocking too!

truman Tue 18-Jun-24 12:52:53

I think HMRC only send out cheques as well, no BACS.

NotAGran55 Tue 18-Jun-24 13:01:36

In your circumstances I would use the Post Office again, or ask a friend or relative to take it to a bank for you.

I love the banking app and use it on the iPad as well as the phone.

You can opt to have a cheque or bank transfer from HMRC.

Most banks have a facility for paying cheques in, and some have a dedicated address for receiving cheques. Their websites usually have the details.

truman Tue 18-Jun-24 16:16:19

Just to let you know after I paid in the cheque last year and it went missing, the Post Office have no way of tracing it. It was put in a special envelope the PO gave me with the bank name on and yet they still could not find it. No wonder they are in a bit of a mess. I was told to wait a couple of weeks to see if it turned up. Hopeless. I did get a replacement cheque from the BS and paid it in at the mobile banking van, but the van was cancelled earlier this year. Banking is a terrible service now.

BlueBelle Tue 18-Jun-24 16:55:45

I don’t trust Royal Mail at all I have so many things either gone missing or taking weeks/months to arrive

mumofmadboys Tue 18-Jun-24 21:39:00

I use the post office to pay any cheques in. Never had a problem

valdali Tue 18-Jun-24 21:43:50

I use the Post Office too, less likely to go missing than posting it I would think?
