.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

@Wilma

I think Miliband has a point. This has been far too much about party politics and people taking umbrage when 'experts' have given advice.

I really DO understand that there are people in this country who are suffering, but that's got sod all to do with the EU. I really wonder how people think the country will improve if Leave wins. Over the last few weeks, I haven't had one proper answer when I've asked that question.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 01:06:57

Hedge fund managers and currency traders are making a fortune! They couldn't care less which way the vote goes, because they'll always make money as long as there's trade.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 01:09:24

I've asked the same question daphne, I just don't understand what people think will happen.

I can just imagine how much money is being made by traders gambling with the value of the Pound. They're probably finding the volatility exciting.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 01:10:21

See we both thought about the money men. angry

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 01:16:50

Turnout in Glasgow is a very low 56%. Wasn't expecting it to be that low. shock

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 01:18:46

Of course the money men (and women) will make money. Once upon a time I worked for Reuters on the economics news floor. Even the journalists practically wet themselves when there was turbulence in the markets - it really didn't matter to them which way anything went. 'Buy on the rumour; sell on the news' is all they care about.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 01:22:41

Can't help but find it obscene.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 01:30:08

I'm very worried. If Leave has won, I truly believe the country has committed an act of lunacy.

Just reading some tweets about Nissan and Sunderland. Apparently UKIP is claiming that Nissan workers didn't like being told by the country that their jobs might be at risk. What the hell did they expect? Would they prefer that Nissan winds down its factory without warning them? Madness!

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 01:41:44

It did cross my mind that that voters would rail against 'threats' like the Nissan position.

It looks like England is voting Leave and Scotland is voting Remain. I have a bad feeling about this now.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 01:43:52

Me too, daphnedill sad I'm just hoping the Scottish and Northern Irish vote saves the day. Just heard someone describe the leave vote in Hartlepool as a vote against the establishment. That'd be the one they want to hand more power over to then? confused

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 01:50:44

Just woke and having a cup of tea. Not liking what I am seeing - but not surprised.

merlotgran Fri 24-Jun-16 01:51:09

Isn't it bizarre that the thread with a light hearted touch is now playing host to the serious stuff results as they happen? hmm

Can't believe I'm still up.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 01:55:04

Exactly, Maggie! And not only that, but an establishment which really doesn't care about them. I'm always struck when I go to some deprived areas how much regeneration is being funded by the EU. People are whistling in the wind, if they think a UK government committed to a 'small state' will replace that funding.

I'm against an 'establishment' which turns a blind eye to tax havens, cuts benefits, promotes an austerity con, centralises education more than ever, refuses to intervene in the housing market failure, etc etc, but the people behind Leave support more of it. And the maddening thing is that they don't care. It's a game and they're rich enough to come out of it all smiling, whichever way it goes.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 01:56:51

It seems to have become fashionable to put two fingers up to people who try to tell you what to do, so I'm making no apologies for posting on this thread.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 01:58:35

So the large Southern Cities and middle class areas have to perform better than expected. I am not optimists

merlotgran Fri 24-Jun-16 01:59:35

Is anyone telling you what to do?

Lighten up. It's going to be a long night.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 02:07:02

I wonder if the vote is going along class lines?

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 02:09:12

Wales leaning towards Brexit?

Scotland Remain?

Northern Ireland possible Brexit?

England 50/50 dependent on London but could be a shock as so far Brexit.

It is funny he he not funny ha ha listening to the politicians commentating. The working class vote so far is Brexit, they have not been listened to . The Labour vote 'so far' has crumbled. However the night is young on 37/382 declared, it could all change.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:11:02

I did wonder about starting a new thread for the results, but as we were chatting on this one, there didn't seem much point.

BBC is asking for people to get in touch, who didn't get to vote because of the rain and transport problems in London. Might explain why the London turnout is lower than expected.

merlotgran Fri 24-Jun-16 02:11:25

I need a coffee.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 02:13:54

Not sure pogs. Undoubtedly the poorer areas are voting leave which is no surprise, they might just as well kick Cameron as nothing else will change. The surprise is the depth of that vote

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:17:49

My local area might be as high as 80% Leave. confused

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:19:21

The analysis of the voting is going to be very interesting and I think Labour might be in for a hammering.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 02:21:33

Yes , but before then they need to look at the reasons people voted as they did. If its because the w/c are pissed off then I'm not sure what they could have done

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 02:21:51

Mine will probably be Leave, despite voting over 50% Conservative in the last election. It's not poor, but it's 'Essex Man' (which isn't a groundless stereotype).
