Like many others, I was appalled, but not surprised by the choice of the American electorate.
Anyone who has spent some time in the USA in recent months would have witnessed the momentum( polite word, otherwise "frenzy") for change. "Change" meaning anti-establishment, anti- leftwing politics, anti-liberal themes and values. This mass frenzy was not dissimilar to the mood in America during the Joe McCarthy era in the early 1950s.
Despite polls, a Trump victory was in the air as a tidal wave of discontent, suspicion, mistrust, hate and fear . Those who have called this a "whitelash" are correct.
The Supreme Court will now be entrenched in conservatism for at least a generation.
However, Americans( that includes me) and the rest of the world have to move on. Let us hope that a Trump presidency will not be as awful as we expect. As with Brexit, the people have spoken. Let us also hope that this tidalwave that has swept through the UK and the USA does not engulf the French with a Marine Le Pen victory in 2017.
Today is a sad day, indeed.
