Trump. How could all those people vote for him?
Ochone ochone (Gaelic lamentation)

annodomini Sat 12-Nov-16 13:17:56

He could keep two promises at once - by putting unemployed men on to the building of the Great Wall of Trump. grin

tanith Sat 12-Nov-16 13:19:24

I wonder who is going to run his business empire as 3 of his children and a son in law who are at present helping run the empire are now on his executive committee. Didn't he want to get rid of the Clinton dynasty in high office? Seems we now have the 'Trump' dynasty.

Washerwoman Sat 12-Nov-16 13:25:47

Pardon my ignorance .Safety pin ?

Galen Sat 12-Nov-16 13:32:36

Men can't be hysterical. The word comes from the ?greek meaning uterus or womb. Hyspteria was thought to be caused by the womb wandering around the body. As men don't have uterii, they can't become hysterical

AlieOxon Sat 12-Nov-16 13:50:01

I've found myself a safety pin.

I never use the word hysteria - because I have heard the history especially Freud...it's been a put down for women

whitewave Sat 12-Nov-16 14:27:02

It isn't used now as a description of a psychological disorder anyway. And as women we should never use it to describe another woman. Solidarity ladies grin

AlieOxon Sat 12-Nov-16 14:49:59

Hear hear.

durhamjen Sat 12-Nov-16 15:01:29

Does shouting at the television at four in the morning when you heard someone say that he voted for Trump despite knowing what an idiot he was count as hysteria?

whitewave Sat 12-Nov-16 15:03:40

No just a sensible reaction grin

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 15:12:59

The idea of wearing a safety pin as a political message was used in the UK after the vote there to leave the European Union, following an increase in alleged cases of hate crime.

(from a BBC news report)

How come no one's mentioned it on this site until now? confused

POGS Sat 12-Nov-16 15:21:39

I heard a comment that sums up the sneering, so - called intellectual elite view of Trump, Brexit, Democracy. It so reminded me of some views on Gransnet.

She was on the march in Portland against Trump. When asked if she was going against a democratic decision she said this:-

"To have Democracy you have to have an educated public".

I though yes misses and you keep belittling people then don't be surprised if they dismiss what you and yours stand for pretty damn quick, if they haven't already..

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 15:28:43

Exactly, POGS, some people just don't get it, do they?

Such as the GN member who posted Brexiteers are not the biggest idiots on the planet any more. after the US election result...

granjura Sat 12-Nov-16 15:42:32

Off to find a safety pin now.

One thing which as amazed me the last few days is the number of Brexiters who are truly concerned about Trump in the USA - whilst many Trump supporters in the USA show concern about Brexit in Europe (well those who know that Europe exists .... Trump knows little about Europe apart from the location of his golf courses. He actually thinks that Belgium is a small village ....). Sometimes we can see things further away much clearer than what is on one's doorstep.

Washerwoman Sat 12-Nov-16 15:47:37

Just looked up the safety pin campaign.Sir Patrick Stewart is from my home town and is endorsing it.I have lots of respect for him as an actor and all the work he has done as former Vice Chancellor of our uni.But I'm not a badge ,ribbon ,pin wearing type of person. The charities I support include a humanitarian, animal and local hospice but I just never feel the need to pin something on.Guess as a Leave voter I'm not eligible anyway !Must ask my gay, Remain voting daughter (Italian partner) when she comes for dinner tonight if that makes me a less caring person.Haven't heard her mention it,or feel the need to wear one come to think of it.

POGS Sat 12-Nov-16 15:53:35

As for using the words hysterical / hysteria I am nobody's sister and will use it as I see fit.

I think these stories are showing the hysteria that has gripped some people.:-

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Colleges Try to Comfort Students Upset by Trump Victory

Dozens of students at Cornell University gathered on a major campus thoroughfare for a “CRY - IN” to mourn the results of the 2016 presidential election Wednesday, with school staff providing tissues and hot chocolate.
---
At Tufts University, ARTS and CRAFTS were on offer. And the University of Kansas reminded students via social media of the THERAPY DOGS are available for comfort every other Wednesday.

"At Yale University, supposedly one of the most elite institutions of higher learning in the country, an anonymous professor has decided to let students skip their midterms:"
----

"People are frustrated, people are just really sad and shocked,” said Trey Boynton, the director of multi-ethnic student affairs at the University of Michigan. “A lot of people are feeling like there has been a loss. We talked about grief today and about the loss of hope that this election would solidify the progress that was being made.”

There was a steady flow of students entering Ms. Boynton’s office Wednesday. They spent the day sprawled around the center, playing with PLAY - DO and coloring in COLORING BOOKS , as they sought comfort and distraction.

Cry - Ins
Play-Doh and coloring.

And they wonder why people don't take them seriously.

durhamjen Sat 12-Nov-16 15:55:29

Try wearing a safety pin on your lapel. It shows that you are 'safe' to talk to.

This was on a Brexit thread in July.
How come you haven't seen it on this site until now, Ana?

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 15:55:36

Washerwoman, of course you're eligible! Anyone and everyone is - I'm just surprised it's taken the US election to bring people's attention to the campaign. Very odd.

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 15:57:03

Yes, and that post prompted exactly how many responses, durhamjen?

durhamjen Sat 12-Nov-16 15:59:23

Doesn't matter, Ana. You said it hadn't been mentioned on GN until now. It has.

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 16:01:15

www.gransnet.com/forums/other_subjects/a1227481-How-can-we-better-support-post-Brexit-victims-of-racism

Here's the thread it was mentioned on.

Not many even posted on it, so many more must have missed it entirely. And it was never mentioned again until today.

POGS Sat 12-Nov-16 16:15:22

Wear a safety pin to show I am 'Safe To Talk To'.

Ye Gods and this is only the beginning.

I went to Leicester this morning , I had a good old shop around, met up with a group of friends (from varying races) for a coffee to arrange our annual New Year meal together.

Did I at any time feel there was racial tension in Leciseter City Center. NOPE

Did we talk about racial attacks in Leicester. NO

Did I think I required to show the people out shopping, engaging socially I was ' Safe To Talk To' NOT I MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT.

Tegan Sat 12-Nov-16 16:27:22

I spoke to someone I hadn't seen for several months the other day, and she said she hadn't told people she was voting remain as she felt intimidated [this was even prior to the referendum]. How can some of you disregard the way that a lot of us feel? I must admit to not hearing of the safety pin thing before today, but I shall wear one. If it gives some of you amusement then, at least it's doing some good, isn't it.

Ana Sat 12-Nov-16 16:30:33

No one's said they were amused, have they? confused

And Remainers seem quite able to disregard how Brexit voter feel!

Jalima Sat 12-Nov-16 16:31:36

I did watch Arctic Live!
Gulags aren't what they used to be
Nothing is the same any more is it, and I lent my copy of One Day to someone and never got it back either.

rosesarered Sat 12-Nov-16 16:33:58

Not amused, just amazed at the childishness of it all! Safety pins are for loose knickers.
POGS those quotes from US campus people DID amuse me though, what idiots.
