INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Hurrah! We're getting OUT at last!

But it seems strange to me that there is so little talk/news on the media about this. Before the General Election everything was about Brexit. To the point that even I got sick to death of it! But it's all gone quiet since then. Are there to be no celebrations from all those who voted to leave? (Sad that Big Ben won't even mark this historic event.)

(I was talking to a young woman the other day, and she didn't even know that we were leaving the EU on Friday!)

I can't really celebate in style, as most of my family wanted to remain -otherwise I would have had a party! So it will be a bit of a damp squib for me!

I shall still open a bottle of champers and toast this great country of ours - our democracy, our integrity - and now, at last, our freedom from a corrupt and self-serving feudalistic state.

Some posters cannot accept having a post deleted!

lemongrove Sun 02-Feb-20 10:09:50

jura2 you may continue to make demands for facts and figures ( ridiculous as it is) but equally posters may feel free to ignore them ( the only sensible course.)

ExperiencedNotOld Sun 02-Feb-20 10:10:45

Why not? Because the clique have made it very obvious that as a newish girl I’ve no right to form my own opinion. And that opinion is that her posts are all self-serving.

ExperiencedNotOld Sun 02-Feb-20 10:12:56

That last comment was in answer to*Ginny42*.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 02-Feb-20 10:18:12

ExperiencedNotOld. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on an open forum whether you are a new or an old poster.

MaizieD Sun 02-Feb-20 10:24:25

But to make comments verging on the racist without knowing anything about the circumstances of the poster they are trying to marginalise is not very wise in a new poster.

It might have been better to find out the full story before telling jura to butt out because she's 'not one of us'

ExperiencedNotOld Sun 02-Feb-20 10:24:32

Thank you GG13. Try as I might I just can’t locate the GN rules that state that certain (obviously long term) members must ‘own the site’, dominating opinion as well as defending each other against all and any criticism. smile

Urmstongran Sun 02-Feb-20 10:25:35

You could set many people's minds at rest by letting us read the articles Jura questions but you are - perhaps too high and mighty in your day of what feels like a win to you? - to do so

Stop this GGMk3 you seem determined to be intransigent here.

I’m sorry really I am but I don’t have the time or the inclination to trawl the Internet for Jura. She worries so on behalf of those who are upset about the result. She can look up articles herself if she chooses. I cannot recall which ones I read anyhow. It was almost 4y ago! And no, that’s not ‘convenient for me’ before you accuse it so.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 10:27:08

Just had it from the horse's mouth. Saying some members sound mental is okay. Suggesting people are high on Brexit and using 'cocaine' in the sentence is not

Is that from GNHQ? Sounds like they need diversity training. Mental really isn’t appropriate.

lemongrove Sun 02-Feb-20 10:32:24

Neither is suggesting that GNers are drug takers.

lemongrove Sun 02-Feb-20 10:32:55

Experienced ???

Callistemon Sun 02-Feb-20 10:40:37

ExperiencedNotOld I hope jura won't mind me explaining that she has dual nationality, Swiss by birth, British by adoption and currently lives in Switzerland.

Dual nationality can be very useful at times and especially at the moment; some of my family are dual nationals.

MaizieD Sun 02-Feb-20 10:49:27

ENO

Time you learned the difference between 'criticism' and xenophobia.

MaizieD Sun 02-Feb-20 10:51:50

That is kind of you, Call.

But I really don't think that jura has to disclose her life story to all new posters to avoid being the target of xenophobic comments.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 10:55:08

I have also reported the mental comment GGMK3 & explained you GNHQ why it is so unacceptable.

Everyone in my family is about to become a dual national (except me, I can’t). At least our kids will have the chance to get their families out if they choose.

Callistemon Sun 02-Feb-20 10:56:50

I didn't post her life story and jura has been happy to post a lot of information on other threads, it is not a secret.

Report my post if you wish.

jura2 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:03:10

Oh I don't mind. Yes, British since 1973, and married to a Brit, with British chidren and grandchildren ...didn't come to live in Switzerland as tax exiles, for sure- just happened to be where my parents needed help just after we retired- after lifelong work for NHS and State Edu- and we stayed.

and we won't need to come back for healthcare either- the Swiss system more than adequate ;). Totally beside the point.

If you state that expert advice said that there will be no problem with medicine imports and isotopes for cancer treatment- you really have to be able to back it up with fact.

BTW recent research shows that more than 80% of claims made by the Conservative Party during Brexit and election campaign were lies.

jura2 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:04:36

And I have never, ever, be subject to racist or xenophobic comments in my 40 years in UK - never.

GN is the first place this has happened. Water over a duck's back for me.

SarahCGransnet (GNHQ) Sun 02-Feb-20 11:07:17

Hi everyone. This thread is turning into a bunfight, and if it doesn't get back on track, it's going to have to go. Racism and discrimination are never okay on Gransnet - please report if you see anything you think we need to take a look at.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:10:01

Thank you for finally deleting the mental comment GNHQ.

MaizieD Sun 02-Feb-20 11:27:10

I wasn't criticising you, Callistomen, nor would I want your perfectly reasonable post deleted.

I just think that it shouldn't be necessary to have to explain posters' 'credentials' for posting. As a 'newbie' ENO should have found out a bit more before launching xenophobic remarks.

lemongrove Sun 02-Feb-20 11:43:46

What rubbish MaizieD...there is nothing at all xenophobic
In ExpNotOld’s post, nothing at all.
GNHQ should read your above comment about ‘newbies’ and reflect that it’s this kind of post that completely puts off new members from posting anything! It’s simple arrogance to think because you have been on here for years you can dictate to newer members of the forum.

jura2 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:49:04

sorry lemon, but ENO's post re me was totally out of order- as have many of the same ilk been in the recent past. I have always been open and honest about our situation btw, and as said, water over a duck's back.

To tell someone they have no right to comment because they are not British and currently live elsewhere - is what... in your own words, but xenophobic?

jura2 Sun 02-Feb-20 11:57:33

But all this is, of course, totally irrelevant and unimportant.

We all know why no-one is coming forwards with information which states that access to medicines and cancer treating isotopes, post Brexit transition period or as soon as Boris (and I am sure it is his actual plan) goes for No Deal - will not be a real problem - and that is because it DOES NOT EXIST. Very simple.

lemongrove Sun 02-Feb-20 11:57:44

However jura2 nobody did say those words to you, I suggest you read the post again.
