INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Hurrah! We're getting OUT at last!

But it seems strange to me that there is so little talk/news on the media about this. Before the General Election everything was about Brexit. To the point that even I got sick to death of it! But it's all gone quiet since then. Are there to be no celebrations from all those who voted to leave? (Sad that Big Ben won't even mark this historic event.)

(I was talking to a young woman the other day, and she didn't even know that we were leaving the EU on Friday!)

I can't really celebate in style, as most of my family wanted to remain -otherwise I would have had a party! So it will be a bit of a damp squib for me!

I shall still open a bottle of champers and toast this great country of ours - our democracy, our integrity - and now, at last, our freedom from a corrupt and self-serving feudalistic state.

Callistemon Fri 31-Jan-20 12:15:43

Well, no, not on our own, but to be fair Guy Verhofstadt mentioned that which made That Lot's behaviour all the more embarrassing.

*^It's sad to see a country leaving that twice liberated us, twice gave its blood to liberate *Europe^

It was a reply to the idea that we go back to the 70s Chestnut. Ananimous, who is either crass, clueless or deliberately contrary said:

We have peeps here that have NO idea how we carried on before the EU hahaha s'funny

As that was in the 1970s I have no idea why you see it as a feeble insult.

Kerenhappuch Fri 31-Jan-20 12:22:42

I am hoping the BBC will declare independence from Nigel Farage and stop inviting him onto every single programme they possibly can. If Bake Off was still on the BBC he'd be one of the judges!

As he says, he's 'won', so his campaign is over and we can enjoy our FFF - Freedom From Farage!

Callistemon Fri 31-Jan-20 12:24:33

DH's theory was that the BBC invited him on to these panels so that the audience could scoff at him.

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 12:26:46

As I said GracesGranMK3 I think ananymous has gone a bit wild with excitement and is posting all sorts of crazy stuff, but no need to come down to that level yourself.

trisher Fri 31-Jan-20 12:41:13

Chestnut Thank you for trying, but they aren't really benefits are they?
1. We regain our democratic right to be a self governing independent nation without the burden of EU imposed laws
Personally I regarded the EU courts as a very welcome safety net which could be used by anyone who felt a country had breached their human rights. (Like the girl raped in Cyprus who could appeal to an EU court)
2. We will keep the billions of taxpayers' money we currently pay to the EU (of which we only get a proportion back).
But no one knows where that money will go. Personally I liked the EU committment to heritage, arts and culture. And didn't actually object to some being spent in other EU countries as I benefitted from better roads and good health provision.
3. As a free self governing nation once again we can return to global trade as the majority of the free world does. Unfortunately the EU was our major market -nearly gone!
Without many EU directives businesses will be freed from time wasting bureaucracy and will prosper, which will create more jobs and opportunities.
Significantly big employers are already planning to leave- Nissan etc.

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 12:46:09

Now Freedom From Farage is an independence I could happily celebrate

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 12:47:38

Academia and finance also losing jobs.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 12:48:27

Who died and made you boss Chestnut? I am well aware that there is little mediation going on on this thread - we have seen all the personal attacks from the leavers towards other posters. However, as far as I know, that's GNHQ's job, not those who see themselves as a lot better than they actually are.

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 12:55:54

GracesGranMK3 What??? ? I've never been boss or claimed to be. Just wondering why you're criticising ananymous but then posting back the same kind of comments.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 13:27:49

I was not pasting back the same sort of comment unless you think we were out of Europe after the 1970s. It is not your job to tell others how to post. Right now it seems to be no one's job.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 13:30:29

That's great Nezumi. It is so often those who were not around or were small children who quote the war so good to see some of our eldest citizens have their say.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 13:31:02

Chestnut.....the answer is that a few posters have no idea of ‘irony’ ?

GrandmaMoira Fri 31-Jan-20 13:32:26

It's a very sad day and I believe the anger and bitterness that we have seen since the referendum will continue.

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 14:31:26

Wow! Trisher is an expert at turning a positive into a negative ?
All the good things about leaving the EU and she can manage to find something wrong with all of them.

All I can say is the good outweighs the bad!
But it will take time.
Don't expect miracles in the near future, just be patient.
All good things will come to those who wait.
As I said, remainers seem to be rather short-sighted.?

vegansrock Fri 31-Jan-20 14:38:20

HS2 will take 10 years of EU contributions - where is the £350m a week of the NHS?

Greta Fri 31-Jan-20 15:36:12

I agree with you, GrandmaMoira, I think the discord will continue. When leave voters who believed the soundbites ”Take Back Control”, Give Us Back Our Sovereignty” etc realize that these were just soundbites they will voice their anger. Also, people who were unhappy about immigration will feel betrayed when immigration continues. Those who lent the Conservatives their vote at the election believing that a northern powerhouse would be created will no doubt want to see results pretty soon.

There can't be any hiding now, no more excuses for not fulfilling all those promises. Just deliver your Golden Age, Mr Johnson.

MaizieD Fri 31-Jan-20 16:06:57

All the good things about leaving the EU and she can manage to find something wrong with all of them.

That, Chestnut, is because there is something wrong with them.

The first is particularly laughable. Trade deals always involve some loss of sovereignty, for both parties. Bang goes 'self governing'...

Businesses free from bureaucracy? Tell that to the businesses that have enjoyed frictionless trade with the EU but who now will have to supply extra paperwork for everything they export..

All good things will come to those who wait.

I thought they were supposed to happen immediately? That's what all the Leave campaigners said. And what if 'good things' don't happen'?

Trotting out trite cliches just does not impress or convince.

Namsnanny Fri 31-Jan-20 16:17:54

Maggiemay 7am ish yesterday..... THANK YOU magnanimous, gracious positive comments! smile

Namsnanny Fri 31-Jan-20 16:19:30

Why go over it all. It's done dusted move on.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 31-Jan-20 16:24:39

Animous, time to cut out drinking gin. Go to bed and sleep it off.

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 16:37:19

I posted similar yesterday Barmeyoldbat and had my post removed as a personal attack on a poster which is against the rules! Just saying...

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 16:55:14

'Why go over it all. It's done dusted move on'
...but it ISN'T done and dusted. Can you not understand that it's only just beginning???.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 17:07:06

the answer is that a few posters have no idea of ‘irony’

It's it interesting that those for whom this isn't their strong suit often have most to say about it.
