INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Hurrah! We're getting OUT at last!

But it seems strange to me that there is so little talk/news on the media about this. Before the General Election everything was about Brexit. To the point that even I got sick to death of it! But it's all gone quiet since then. Are there to be no celebrations from all those who voted to leave? (Sad that Big Ben won't even mark this historic event.)

(I was talking to a young woman the other day, and she didn't even know that we were leaving the EU on Friday!)

I can't really celebate in style, as most of my family wanted to remain -otherwise I would have had a party! So it will be a bit of a damp squib for me!

I shall still open a bottle of champers and toast this great country of ours - our democracy, our integrity - and now, at last, our freedom from a corrupt and self-serving feudalistic state.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 17:28:40

All the good things about leaving the EU and she can manage to find something wrong with all of them.

I think you are letting your loyalty to an ideology make a fool of you. What you posted was simply not true.

Never mind. You have voted for a belief in how we are governed and really nothing more. I see tears ahead when you realise you will not benefit and nor will the country. This government is unlikely to give it to you when it's down to them. As we see on here, the right only just about tolerates the working poor; those who have been broken by life don't stand a chance although I will be happy to applaud if they do change their spots.

What will those who ran the crude press campaign do now and how will the great opportunist - never tell the truth when a lie will get you headline - Johnson actually do as PM. It's not as if he ever told us he was aiming for anything past getting us out of the club we had willingly joined.

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 17:42:08

I read that Johnson went into hiding for several days after the referendum result having sided with something he didn't actually believe in and not expecting to win. But I can't verify it.

This thread is a positive one about Independence Day but the gloom mongers still abound! ?

varian Fri 31-Jan-20 18:22:13

Never mind if most Britons are feeling gloomy. Vladimir Putin is having a good laugh.

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 18:28:01

I suspect this diverse bunch will let you join their party. Not quite how they think stamping on the EU flag shouting ‘free shoe wipes’ is going to be interpreted by anyone who isn’t a Katie Hopkins fab, but there we go.

You are posting on the wrong thread varian. This is the one for people who want to celebrate Independence Day.
?????
There is another thread for all those wallowing in misery.

Opal Fri 31-Jan-20 18:59:11

Just about to pour my first celebratory drink for the evening smile.

Opal Fri 31-Jan-20 18:59:43

Four hours to go and counting ..... grin

JenniferEccles Fri 31-Jan-20 19:16:09

Did anyone believe even three months ago that this day would ever come?

Much to celebrate that’s for sure.

Urmstongran Fri 31-Jan-20 19:19:59

3 hours 40 mins ?? ??‼️

Urmstongran Fri 31-Jan-20 19:25:45

“The most important thing to say tonight is that this is not an end but a beginning. This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act. It is a moment of real national renewal and change.”

A taste of what Boris Johnson will tell the nation tonight in a video message to be released at 10pm GMT, an hour before the UK leaves the European Union.

Desdemona Fri 31-Jan-20 19:34:50

I feel a general sense of unease, which I have felt since a referendum was first suggested. I voted, but whether I voted rightly or wrongly I have no idea - I voted based on the information available to me at the time.

paddyanne Fri 31-Jan-20 19:34:55

and if you believe a single thing that comes out of that mans mouth then you are just as deluded as he is .

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 19:39:07

Hasn't he already had to backtrack on the end of austerity, border checks; Australian points immigration system; £30 [£35?] thousand minimum wage requirement etc. And we haven't even left yet....

Callistemon Fri 31-Jan-20 19:43:24

Boris, as described by a child featured on the One Show:

"It looks like someone took his hair and threw it on top of his head".

At least I laughed
Before I burst into tears before 11pm

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 19:49:28

I’ve most thought of a positive. Anne Widdecombe is no longer going to be my MEP. That’s worth a bottle of beer - cheers.

Urmstongran Fri 31-Jan-20 19:53:34

More to the point, no one is going to be your MEP, ever again.
?

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 19:54:39

I quite liked my Lib Dem one.

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 19:59:05

Callistemon Fri 31-Jan-20 20:01:17

Bye bye Nathan Gill!

Nezumi65 Fri 31-Jan-20 20:04:17

That’s a definite something to celebrate!

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 20:47:09

This thread is a positive one about Independence Day but the gloom mongers still abound!

I understand that your whole persona is now wrapped up in a vote you took years ago Chestnut and that your future view of yourself will depend on how things go, but that does not mean you can tell other people what they believe or what they feel.

You have decided your identity depends on this vote. Many of us have an identity outside it. I have no idea what will happen if your identity is broken. We are not, as you insultingly say, gloom mongers but many of us are angry that such as a small proportion of our country has taken it in a way we didn't want it to go. We don't agree. You cannot make us agree. Your culture and mine seem so far apart I do not want to know people like you any more than I would have wanted to know those who took other countries to extremes and calling me childish names will not change my mind.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 20:49:00

You are posting on the wrong thread varian. This is the one for people who want to celebrate Independence Day.

You really are a bossy madam, aren't you? GN and all it's threads are for everyone unless you have voted against that too.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 31-Jan-20 20:53:13

Labaik, Sajid Javid has written to ministers asking them to find cuts of up to five per cent within their budgets, in a letter obtained by Sky News and the Sun. So much for the end of austerity and enough money for the NHS and Care.
